Using the same password for multiple devices?

We’re all profoundly aware, even to the point of dread, that fiddling with our passwords is, at the very least, unwise. So why do we keep neglecting password management so blindly? There are dozens of easily implementable solutions we can adopt right now and do away with a long-held, unnecessary stress, enjoying peace of mind knowing our credentials are protected.

Digital serenity starts with strong data protection; yet internet users engage in all sorts of risky practices. Stats are worrisome, particularly for younger generations. Despite 79% of Zoomers know that reusing the same credentials across more accounts is unsafe, only 7% can say they’ve broken the habit.

So, why are awareness levels at their height, but only on paper? Could it be ‘password fatigue’ that’s keeping people in this silent cycle and risking their financial, emotional, and personal lives?

We dive into one of the most curious cases of the digital age: why, despite knowing the risks, many keep jeopardising their digital peace of mind for reasons that go beyond forgetfulness or carelessness.

Awareness at its zenith

When it comes to awareness across generations, it’s perhaps understandable why youngsters are more familiar and aware of the importance of good password practices. They’ve never known a world without the internet, social media, apps, and online sites around, thus digital risks have become something similar to the risk of exposure to the scorching sun without SPF for the whole summer holiday.

As a norm, cybersecurity advice has always been there, from recommendations in news articles to TikTok explainers to workplace training sessions. Sometimes – and hopefully increasingly frequently – businesses adopt digital solutions such as providing each employee with a dedicated business email in order to secure data and mitigate risks that would otherwise arise from practices like storing passwords in notes, easily exposable and not at all concealed, at least from a good hacker’s POV.

GenX are lagging behind when it comes to authentication

While over 80% of Gen Z and Millennials say they’re likely to enable (multi factor authentication) MFA, only about one-third of Gen X say they use tools like password managers — showing MFA adoption still lags in that group. And although this is an indicator of how the younger generations approach digital safety, they’re still failing to change passwords when needed, or to use complex passwords. An intriguing paradox, right?

Read more: How smart tech is transforming the hotel experience

Password fatigue – where the stress stems

How come the gap between awareness and action is alarmingly high? A possible reason is psychological, and it borders on the tiredness of stressing over passwords, aka password fatigue. There are high stress levels when it comes to creating, storing, and keeping credentials safe from predators, or from leaking. Many are willing to actually give up an account if accessing it means going through the reset process. While others are intentionally forgetting passwords, knowing that changing them is so easy – you usually give your phone number and receive a code.

Unlike Boomers, who may use fewer online apps and services, other generations juggle multiple digital accounts. According to the same Business Wire news article, 72% of Millennials and Zoomers have less than 25 distinct passwords, even though the number of accounts they hold can well exceed this figure.

The maths just doesn’t seem to make sense. Unless internet users use a password manager, reuse becomes difficult, if not impossible, to avoid.

Password sharing inertia

Another weakness among internet users is sharing passwords, whether over text messages, verbal exchanges, or screenshots, to name a few. Despite the availability of safe digital sharing tools, younger users often turn to shortcuts, with few really using secure sharing platforms. Part of this innocence may come from their collaborative digital habits, with individuals sharing the same accounts, thus credentials, across apps like Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, etc. It’s not just about money saving and convenience, but also a way to demonstrate trust among peers and socialize more.

What may seem heartwarming can unfortunately become a big vulnerability – smaller business accounts, for instance, are more appealing and targeted by cybercriminals than those of bigger companies. This reality proves that no matter how unimportant one deems their data to be, a cyberpunk out there will find it useful and desirable.

Being aware doesn’t mean taking action

Despite knowing better, every generation falls short on password hygiene, prompting reflection over the reasons that sustain bad habits. First, individuals aren’t willing to compromise on their convenience, not even for security. Notifications that a password has been involved in a data breach often fail to generate tangible consequences, reinforcing the perception that password threats aren’t truly that serious. Over time, this combo of convenience and a lack of immediate repercussions makes it easier for risky habits to hold on.

Repeated warnings and breach alerts themselves lead to users becoming desensitised and unmoved, creating apathy and security fatigue. Themes like these demonstrate that it’s less about ignorance, and more about psychology and habit.

What to hope for in the future

There’s a need to address how all generations approach password management, and it’s important to understand it in order to better protect your own digital life. Most parts are about how you regard your digital activity, so depending on which category you belong to, you may engage in one or another.

The idea of using stronger passwords is toast and can even add to tiredness when this is already a well-known fact among netizens. The focus – yours included – should better shift toward other practices, like using biometrics and passwordless authentication methods, securing credentials with password managers, and staying up to date with emerging solutions.

How smart technology is redefining the guest experience in contemporary hotels

Hotel chains face a growing challenge in meeting ever-pressing customer demands. And this means automating as much of that customer experience as possible to free up staff for more pressing issues.

Technology continues to assist hotels in these efforts, with smart tech increasingly used in reception, at the door and within the walls of hotel rooms.

But for customers the technology still needs to be accessible, usable and enjoyable for guests of any age. So how are hotels doing in achieving those goals?

Hotels now include business models where a human being is a rare sight, customer service (and food) is non-existent, and garish apps do most of the transactions. But that’s one end of the spectrum, which can then go all the way to the wholly traditional, often serving guests who have visited regularly for decades, and are renowned for their service.

Look a little closer and you can see that neither type (and those that blend the best or worst aspects of both), is using technology to “enhance the customer experience,” as they like to say in their press releases and brochures.

For us visitors, the technology is more visible in some places along the hotel experience, and more subtle in others.

The quest for a seamless check-in

Traditionally, checking into a hotel meant collecting a key and venturing into the maze of corridors. Today, you’re more likely to be given a smart card or key fob for doors, limited to the length of your stay.

In most hotels, gone are the days of waiting in long queues at reception. Many modern hotels offer guests the speed of a mobile check-in via smartphone apps or a kiosk in the lobby.

Some even allow guests to bypass the front desk entirely, using digital key cards stored on their phones to unlock their rooms. And they are only too happy to showcase your loyalty points building up as you stay with them, with tempting offers and other benefits like local events, all visible without struggling with a guide.

That phone app is like a Swiss Army Knife and will guide you to your floor and door, and can even perform tricks like pre-setting the air-conditioning. For older tourists, that might not feel too alien, but inside the room that shift can feel both exciting and unfamiliar. Apps can take over the usual interactive elements, adjusting the lighting to suit your mood, finding your ideal temperature, and accessing the entertainment options.

By mimicking increasingly familiar smart home services, the hotel room becomes more of a playground. This is ideal for tired travellers who don’t want to get out of bed to sort out the basics.

Approaching Star Trek room service at Warp Speed

Okay, we’re not quite at the level where food and drinks can materialise into your hotel room, but the traditions of ordering food have been replaced by a more efficient service. For the hospitality industry that can mean no more printing and replacing menus (and scribbling out the unavailable food options).

The Japanese and their love of robots sees robotic delivery systems delivering guests’ food and beverages, saving poor Manuel from rushing to and from the kitchen all night. Expect these concepts to become more common in Western hotels over time.

Robots can also be used in the cleaning role, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in rooms in response to air quality and other sensors. And with other smart sensors, energy can be saved by dimming or turning off the lights, and minimising use of water and power when guests are not around.

Your digital concierge lives in your pocket

The concierge is a tradition that lives on among leading high end hotel brands. But this has vanished more widely, leaving us to lug our luggage around and summon a taxi in the pouring rain ourselves. But the modern digital concierge can perform a wide range of other tricks. Primarily summoning that taxi on your behalf while you stay dry.

It can also make dining suggestions, highlight what’s on in town, and make bookings for you. Some have more sass than others. Take Rose for example, the resident “mischief-maker” and digital concierge at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Perhaps in time hopefully more hotels will follow her lead.

Since many experienced 50+ travellers are used to technology at home, these upgrade will not feel scary in the hotel environment. But if you need that human touch, enjoy them while they last or head to premium hotels where tradition trumps technology.

Bob Dylan’s 2025 tour comes to the UK this November. The icon is back touring his 2020 album Rough and Rowdy Ways, following a run of performances at the Royal Albert Hall late last year.

Dylan is visiting eight different cities across the UK and Ireland this November, from Brighton to Killarney. Interestingly, no London date is scheduled for this tour. Fans in the south of England will have to try their luck at getting tickets to the one Brighton show scheduled. Or maybe head to Swansea where he’ll be performing for three nights!

Read more: Gary Kemp on ageing in the music industry

Keeping it exclusive

If you’re a Dylan fan, getting tickets to the tour is your only chance at seeing the 84 year old perform though. Dylan has partnered with Yondr (which works with educators, artists, organisations and individuals around the world to create phone-free spaces) to keep these shows completely phone free. So, for those who can’t get tickets, there’ll be no chance of watching footage on social media the following day. Or maybe little chance. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone snags any secret footage!

It seems like a rigorous effort though. Individuals will have to pop their phone away in a pouch when arriving at shows. The pouch locks in certain areas of the venue, preventing attendees from accessing them in auditoriums.

The phone free environment aims to encourage fans to connect with the music, and engage with the artist in the moment.

Bob Dylan sings “The Times They Are A-Changin’” in the East Room of the White House

This isn’t the first time Bob Dylan has employed phone locking pouches at his shows. In 2024, phones were banned in several shows of his European leg, including Dylan’s three-night run at the Royal Albert Hall. Other artists like Bruno Mars and Swedish rock group, Ghost, have also employed phone locking pouches at their shows in recent years.

Exclusive or exclusionary? It certainly brings a ‘you had to be there’ element to live shows, but does leave fans high and dry who couldn’t get a ticket or had other commitments clashing with tour dates.

After tickets?

Set your alarms, tickets for the UK & Ireland dates go on sale Friday 18 July at 10am.

Job hunting? Is AI deciding whether you’re hired or not? Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping the recruitment landscape. From filtering CVs to matching candidates with job roles at scale, AI is making broad steps toward a faster, more efficient hiring process. Yet, as automation becomes more entrenched, an important question has come to light: does AI mean human recruiters are at risk of becoming redundant? A recent industry webinar, Smart Hiring or Backfiring: Employing AI in Recruitment, assessed the viewpoints of four experts in HR, recruitment, and AI governance.

Together, they shed light on where AI is genuinely adding value, where it still falls short, and why human judgement remains essential.

Can AI really improve hiring?

One of AI’s biggest strengths lies in its ability to sift through huge amounts of data with speed and consistency. When it comes to initial CV screening or matching applicants to specific job criteria, a well-calibrated AI system can often outperform traditional processes, helping to reduce unconscious bias and flag strong candidates more efficiently.

But the results are only as good as the data it’s fed. If historical hiring data is flawed or biased, AI can inadvertently replicate those issues. As David Smith, AI Sector Lead at The DPO Centre, puts it; ‘To get an automated system to match and evaluate things better, we need to be clearer at describing what we want and what we need. The need for automation improves the entire process.’

Why humans still have the edge

Despite the obvious benefits of automation, human recruiters aren’t going anywhere. Certain aspects of recruitment, like assessing emotional intelligence, gauging motivation, or judging cultural fit, simply don’t translate well to algorithms.

Helen Armstrong, CEO of Silvercloud HR, made this point clear, identifying that ‘cultural fit is as relevant as having the right qualifications and experience. It’s about attitude, and AI is never going to be able to assess that. AI has to be an assistant to the recruiter, not a replacement.’

Candidates are using AI too

It’s not just employers making use of AI. Job seekers are increasingly turning to tools like ChatGPT to refine their CVs, craft keyword-optimised cover letters, and tailor their applications to specific roles. On the surface, this levels the playing field. But it also creates a new challenge.

Richard Bradshaw, Co-founder of PeopleRE, warns that this can widen the gap between how someone presents on paper and who they actually are. ‘Many recruitment processes fail, not because a candidate lacks the skills, but because they ultimately don’t have a genuine desire for the specific role. While AI can efficiently match candidates based on qualifications and experience, it isn’t yet advanced enough to assess a candidate’s motivation, passion or long-term commitment, rather than just securing any job.’

Beat the ageism game: CV tips for the over-50s

The risk of a two-speed hiring system

As AI becomes more embedded in recruitment, there’s growing concern that it could lead to a two-tier system. Lower-level or high-volume roles are increasingly handled through fully automated processes, while executive-level hires continue to receive bespoke, human-led attention.

Smith notes the potential social cost of this divide. ‘There could be a real digital divide between the exec search and specific job roles for high value individuals, as opposed to the real volume end of the market. I think we have a real possibility that people will be massively disenfranchised at one end where that high-volume and low personalisation comes in. It’s going to be a challenge.’

Making AI work for you as a recruiter

If AI is to enhance hiring – rather than hinder it – it needs to be introduced with a clear strategy and a strong ethical framework. Recruiters should start by identifying what they actually want to achieve. Is it a faster time-to-hire? Better quality candidates? More diverse shortlists?

Once you know the goal, choose a system that aligns with it. And make sure it integrates smoothly with the tools you already use. If the tech is clunky or unintuitive – for recruiters or applicants – it’s unlikely to succeed.

Transparency is just as important. You need to be able to explain how your AI tools make decisions. Bias mitigation, built-in analytics, and regular reviews are essential for fair, accountable hiring.

Three key questions to ask your AI provider

Before rolling out any AI recruitment tool, make sure you ask:

How is bias mitigated?
What steps are taken to ensure the system isn’t reproducing harmful patterns?

How is candidate data protected?
You’re dealing with sensitive information. How is it kept safe?

How is the system monitored over time?
AI isn’t ‘set and forget’. Vendors should be able to show how they track performance, flag problems, and adapt the model when needed.

A future built on collaboration

AI isn’t here to replace recruiters, but to work with them. When used thoughtfully, it can take the heavy lifting out of hiring, streamline admin, and improve consistency. That said, real success depends on keeping real people at the heart of the process.

AI-powered predictive maintenance systems

Machine learning algorithms make devices more intuitive and adaptive to homeowners’ needs. Nest thermostats can automatically switch to ‘Eco Temperatures’ based on your phone’s location and activity sensors when no one is home.

Predictive AI in home automation allows devices to detect when they will fail and alert you in advance, like washing machines notifying you when a part needs replacing before it breaks. The more you use these devices, the better they will understand and predict your habits, like dimming lights before going to bed or starting to brew coffee before you wake up.

Emotion-aware environmental controls

Advances in AI smart systems could soon facilitate mood-detection technology, personalising the home environment further. Emotional artificial intelligence is a field dedicated to analysing vast amounts of data to recognise, categorise, and adapt to human behaviour.

Homes with integrated EAI systems may adjust the lighting to warmer tones after sensing their owners have had a stressful day at work or gently play relaxing music to lower an elevated heart rate. These systems could even analyse users’ voices during phone calls to detect emotional cues of anxiety and depression.

Autonomous security networks

Ring is perhaps the best-known smart home security system. It employs a combination of sensors and cameras to send alerts to users’ smartphones. Unlike traditional alarm systems that rely on basic motion detection, it uses the Motion Zones features to create specific areas that trigger alerts, ignoring normal street activity while focusing on entryways.

Other brands use facial recognition technology to allow known family members and friends into homes while sending alerts if they detect an unfamiliar face. Data-intensive home security systems require seamless connectivity, so consider reviewing fibre deals to ensure your home network can simultaneously handle multiple 4K video streams and real-time AI processing.

Integrated health monitoring ecosystems

In addition to sensing emotions, AI is beginning to monitor health at home. Smart toilets are already analysing biomarkers in urine and stool to offer insights into potential health conditions.

The Israeli medical device Olive Diagnostics has released its KG sensor mounts onto toilets and performs real-time urinalyses to detect biomarkers for kidney, ovarian, and prostate cancer, as well as heart failure and kidney stones.

Smart inhalers like Berry Healthcare’s RS01X can monitor therapy adherence and inhalation techniques to provide feedback, helping asthma patients manage their condition more effectively at home.

Life is about making the most of every moment…

As we age, we increasingly appreciate the value of time, and the joy of simplifying life wherever possible. So these clever hacks to save time are worth checking out.

We live in an incredible age where modern products and gadgets can help us streamline everyday tasks, giving us more time to focus on the things we love. Here are a few brilliant time-saving hacks that make life easier and more enjoyable.

Quick and cosy fires with flamers

Lighting a fire used to be a bit of a hassle; maybe scrambling for kindling and struggling to get the flames going. With KindleFlamers, that’s a thing of the past. These natural firelighters, made from wood shavings and wax, ignite quickly and burn cleanly, and you don’t need kindling. They are amazing. Just pop one under your small logs, light them, and watch the fire come to life. No mess, no stress, just a cosy fire in minutes. Leaving more time to relax by the hearth.

Let a robot do the cleaning

Vacuuming isn’t high on anyone’s list of fun activities, and bending down to clean every nook and cranny doesn’t get easier with age. That’s why a little robot vacuum cleaner can be a godsend. It quietly goes about its business while you can enjoy a coffee or read a book, or even do some work! It’s also possible to upgrade them to one that mops the floor.

Read more: 20 of the best bucket list destinations in the world

Automate your front door with a video doorbell

If you haven’t taken the plunge on a video doorbell, this is worth considering. A video doorbell not only saves time but also provides peace of mind. With a quick glance at your phone, you can see who’s at the door and decide whether to answer. You can also talk to visitors or delivery drivers remotely, saving a trek to the front door. Particularly useful in tall houses or buildings.

Control your home’s temperature with a smart thermostat

Gone are the days of coming home to a cold house. Smart thermostats, like Nest or Hive, let you control the temperature of your home directly from your phone. You can warm up the house before you arrive or set schedules to ensure your home is always at the perfect temperature. They’re not just convenient—they’re energy-efficient too, helping you save money on heating bills.

Preheat your car on frosty mornings

Cold mornings used to mean scraping ice off the windshield and shivering in the driver’s seat while waiting for the car to warm up. Many modern cars come with apps that allow you to remotely start the engine and heat the interior, including the seat warmers. By the time you’re ready to leave, your car is toasty warm and ready to go, making winter mornings far less of a chore.

A smart speaker that does it all

Whether it’s setting reminders, playing your favourite music, or even answering trivia questions, a smart speaker can become a handy companion. Play the radio while you’re cooking, check the weather before heading out, or even add things to your shopping list. It’s like having a personal assistant that’s always ready to help. You can also link them with family or best friends, meaning that if you get into trouble, it’s easy to let them know if. Even if your phone isn’t with you.

Modern products, more free time

These clever products can help you reclaim precious time and make everyday life simpler. From quick-start fires with Flamers to voice-controlled lights and robot cleaners, there’s never been a better time to embrace the convenience of modern living. After all, life’s too short to waste on the little things, when there are so many big moments to enjoy.

Organising the space in which you work, and keeping your desktop organised always helps you concentrate better on the tasks you need to solve.

The same applies to the workspace in the gadgets we use for work. This is why the organisation of files and folders on a Mac is an essential factor in effective operation and our productivity. Therefore, to avoid losing valuable information, wasting time searching for it, and as a result, decreasing productivity, we will look at the best ways to organise your Mac dock and the best way to organise files.

Use folders for organising documents

Proper organisation starts with creating folders. To do this, right-click in the Finder and choose New Folder. Alternatively, you may also use the Shift+Command+N combination. Thanks to folders, you may group your files into categories, so in the future making it easier to find the documents you need.

For example, you can create folders by dividing them into business projects you are working on.

You can also create thematic folders to organise docs by type or topic. For example, you could have a separate folder for music or videos, and another for documents or photos.

What is Smart Folder Mac?

With a Smart Folder Mac, you can automatically collect files based on specific criteria. This makes it easier to find and organise documents.

This way, you can create a smart folder that automatically collects files created in the last week or month, or collects all Word documents. This is especially useful for those users who deal with a large number of documents.

To create such a Mac folder, you should choose File, then New Smart Folder in the Finder, and then configure the search criteria.

After creating different folders, you may also need to transfer files on your Mac. So, you may be wondering how to move files on Mac. This process can be done in different ways.

Hey. You might not feel like an ‘elder’ now, but if you’re lucky, you will do one day

We’re living in an increasingly ageing population. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) states that “the population of England and Wales has continued to age” and that “there are more people than ever before in older age groups”. Taking care of our elders is becoming a bigger and bigger job. So how can technology help with future elder care?

18.6 per cent of the total population were aged 65 or over in the census 2021 results, “compared with 16.4 per cent at the time of the previous census in 2011”.

With an ageing population comes increasing pressure on health care services for the elderly – so is technology the answer?
Here, we look at how technological advancements could transform the ways in which we care for our elders.

Monitor key health information

One way in which technology could help us track the well-being of elders is through monitoring important health information.

Many of us now choose to wear smart watches that provide insightful health information. Like heart rate, blood oxygen levels, sleep quality and stress levels.

Wearable devices could help both family members and healthcare professionals monitor key information of vulnerable elders. For instance, it could provide data on things such as heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, breathing rate and so on.

Detect trips and falls

The UK government states that “people aged 65 and over have the highest risk of falling” and that “around half of people aged 80 and over fall at least once a year.” Falls can cause “distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence and mortality.”

The use of motion sensors can help to detect trips and falls that have occurred and alert nursing staff or family members. This allows others to come to the elder’s aid quickly, getting them the assistance or healthcare they need.

Single-board computers such as the OKdo Rock can be used to create a smart and efficient fall detection system using WiFi and Bluetooth.

Track unusual movements with motion sensors

Another way that technology can assist with elder care is by helping to keep track of abnormal movements. This is particularly important for those with health conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Motion sensors can alert loved ones if their elderly relative has done anything out of the ordinary. Like leaving the house for long periods without returning. The system can send an alert to family members or health workers, so they can act swiftly and check on the elderly person’s safety.

It could also be used to track how often someone is eating or using the bathroom. Abnormal instances can be reported so that any potential health issues could be investigated.

One of the key benefits of these monitoring systems is that it allows elderly people to stay in the comfort of their home for longer – while their well-being is monitored remotely.

There are many ways in which technology can help provide effective and efficient healthcare to the elderly. Smart systems can help to monitor abnormal behaviour, detect dangerous trips or falls, and keep track of important health data.
