Dying with dignity on your own terms has historically usually meant a trip to Switzerland. But there is an alternative for those who want some control over their ending. Meet the ‘Living Will’.

To some, death can be a scary concept. However, for many people, the thought of being kept alive in a state where you are unable to move, communicate, and/or recognise yourself and loved ones can be equally or even more terrifying.

There are a number of conditions that can affect your brain and body, including dementia, degenerative diseases, or those that affect the central nervous system, such as motor neurone disease. People with terminal illnesses like cancer can also end up having their lives prolonged way past the point anybody would wish.

There are also traumas, such as a catastrophic brain injury, car accident and so on. You get the picture. Any or all of these could leave you in a state where life is never going to improve, but you’re kept alive because that’s the law.

But if ending your days on this planet hooked up to a ventilator, feeding tube, or oxygen mask isn’t something you’d choose, there is something you can do about it.

Have you heard of a Living Will?

Many people are unaware of Living Wills. In fact, according to a  2020 report, only 13% of UK adults have a written Living Will.

It’s also a good idea to discuss your options with healthcare professionals

A Living Will, also known as an ‘advanced decision’, is a form that allows you to refuse medical treatment if you do not wish to have it in the future.

It is legally binding in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and allows you to outline your treatment choices to your family, carers, and health professionals if you don’t have the mental capacity or are unable to communicate your wishes yourself. You plan this in advance, when you’re still fit and able. And it’s logged, ready to be activated when you can no longer advocate for yourself.

This means today you could protect the future you from having to endure the indignity of being helpless whilst you genuinely just wait to die.

It might sound brutal, but people may opt for a Living Will for many reasons, including:

– Not wanting their life artificially prolonged
– Want to make it easier for their family
– Wanting to be prepared and in control of their own choice
– Been diagnosed with a serious illness

How does this all work?

Whilst there are several ways to set something like this in motion (ask your solicitor), Compassion in Dying is the UK’s most recommended and trustworthy Living Will service provider.

Their main goal is to improve the dying experience in the UK by allowing people to take charge of how they want to end their lives.

To be clear; this is NOT the same as euthanasia. The refusal of treatment is not the same as asking someone to help you end your life.

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are the acts of deliberately ending a person’s life to relieve their suffering. They are illegal under British law. However, creating a Living Will allows you to make your own choices ahead of time, and is perfectly legal.

How to set it up

With a step-by-step guide, Compassion in Dying has helpfully made it easy. You must be over the age of eighteen and have the mental capacity to make a Living Will.

Their service includes a card, which you carry with you, a bit like the old organ donor cards

What should I think about?

Consider the circumstances where you’d want to be able to opt out of living if you could. Getting diagnosed with a terminal illness, for example, being catastrophically injured and left helpless or catatonic. But think also about the lives of those who care about you. It’s a journey that you and the loved ones surrounding you will face together, so it’s important to discuss this with them too.

It’s also a good idea to discuss your options with healthcare professionals. Explore the risks and benefits of different treatments that are available in the future, and consider what refusing treatments can mean.

In the end, your decision is yours and should be respected. If you have the mental capacity to think about how you want to be treated or not, then you should have the right to do so.

Ever wanted to dress up as Kate Bush and recreate her dance from the 1978 Wuthering Heights video? Sounds oddly specific but if your answer is yes, then you’re in luck.

On 28 July 2024, Folkestone Harbour Arm in Kent will be celebrating Kate Bush Day, as they do every year, in a fabulously unique way. The Kate Bush Day event sees people pay tribute to the English singer by dressing in her iconic red dress from the Wuthering Heights music video. Not only that, but recreating the famous dance.

The event is free to take part in. All the hosts ask is that you show up in a red dress.

Hundreds of Kate Bush fans came together wearing red floaty dresses on Folkestone’s Harbour Arm to dance to her most iconic song, Wuthering Heights, on the 30th of July 2023 in Folkestone, United Kingdom. The event coincided with Kate Bush’s 65th birthday and was watched by hundreds of onlookers.

At last year’s event, more than 1,500 participants attended; all dressed as Kate Bush. This year’s anticipated event will have more exciting opportunities.

The event will start at The Goods Yard with a warmup and dance tutorial, starting at 10 am till 11 am. Then from 12 pm, the first performance will commence at The Harbour Arm.

There will be a Kate Bush tribute band, the KT Band, from 12:15 pm to 2:30 pm, where an original member of Kate Bush’s band will perform.

A second performance will take place at 4 pm at the Harbour, where Dolly Doowop will close with a special DJ set inspired by Kate Bush, ending at 6:15 pm.

Short history

The Kate Bush Day trend started in 2013 with Shambush, a Brighton-based group that performed a collaborative performance piece, The Ultimate Kate Bush Experience. This saw over 400 people dressed up as Kate Bush taking part in recreating the dance from Wuthering Heights.

This trend started to stretch worldwide, even including Texas and Sydney. However, the one based in Kent at Folkestone has been the most successful since 2018.

We’ve rounded up some of the best fishing competitions and events in the UK, which will encourage you to grab your fishing rod and get involved.

Let’s talk about fish, baby

Just like the diverse waters in the angling world, there are different types of fishing. Coarse fishing, game fishing and sea fishing are among the most popular forms of fishing in the UK. Each type of fishing has its distinctive experiences and challenges:

Coarse fishing

This is where you focus on catching freshwater fish, typically roach, bream, carp, and tench, where the species are considered undesirable to be eaten, also called rough fish. Coarse fishing aims to manoeuvre powerful and larger fish in slow-going waters, including rivers, lakes, ponds and canals.

Game fishing

Game fishing, or sport fish, centres around fish species that can be eaten. Predominantly, this includes salmon, trout and grayling. For this type of fishing, the tackle is usually lightweight and used for precision. These fish species are often found in flowing waters, such as rivers and streams.

Sea fishing

Sea fishing is simply catching fish from the sea. The best locations for sea fishing in the UK are Cornwall, Scotland, Cardiff, Northern Ireland, Brighton and Northeast England.

Fishing competitions can be won in various ways. Some target a single fish species, while others include all types of fish. Normally, winning depends on the total weight of the fish caught. Most fishing competitions will require a fee but will offer you a cash prize by the end of it.

UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival

After following ‘seven very successful years’, the UK Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival is oh-fish-ally back.

I will stop with the fish puns, but if you’re a flying fish enthusiast, then you might want to stick around for this one. One of the UK’s biggest game fishing scenes is centred around the historic harbour of St Mawes in Cornwall and is set to take place from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 October 2024.

While taking advantage of the numerous beaches and rocky areas, the organisers say that participants will fish from the shoreline ‘using your fishing skills and watercraft’ and, when entering, you will receive detailed local information on the best local marks and how these vary with tide and wind conditions. The organisers have also stated that ‘accommodation is available to suit all budgets.’

Naturally, this competition has the extra thrill of being one of the best flying fish festivals in the UK, however, the essence lies in meeting like-minded people who share their interest in fly fishing. The fly fishing festival will host social events, such as a training day which features Cornwall’s top guides and training clinics along with other social events in local pubs with a drink reception.

If you’re an aspiring fly fisher or already an enthusiast, then this is a must-joiner. The entry date closes on 30th September 2024.

Mull of Galloway

The Mull of Galloway Sea Angling Festival in Scotland offers a wide range of different competitions. Immerse yourself in one of the UK’s luscious fishing environments and experience great fishing in the Mull of Galloway while joining a community of anglers.

During the MOGSAF Tope Event, which took place Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 of June 2024, money was raised for the Kirkmaiden Community Harbour Trust, where anglers came together and raised £150 for the Drummore Harbour sea wall, which will help facilitate the harbour. The MOGSAF Facebook page stated: “The foreshore area in Drummore is an excellent area to use during our events. Without the work of the KCHT, this area wouldn’t be anywhere near as suitable as it is today”.

Thanks to the MOGSAF collaborative spirit with local organisations like the KCHT, they help to create a joyful experience for anglers and spectators alike, which enhances the event and strengthens the community, making the festival a true celebration for the local area.

Other upcoming events are the MOGSAF Species Event 2024 in August, starting at 8:00 am on Friday 2 till Sunday 4 at 5:00 pm and the MOGSAF Bass Event in September, set to run at 9:00 am on Saturday 21 and end on Sunday 22 at 6:00 pm.

European Open Beach Championships 2025

This event has passed, however, if you feel that beach fishing may be your calling, or you’re a beginner looking to challenge yourself, then you should take note in your calendar for the 2025 Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championship, as this is Europe’s largest three-day beach fishing competition.

The competition will run from Friday 7 till Sunday 9 March 2025 and will be held at the breathtaking east riding of the Yorkshire coast, with many fishing locations stretching from the North Marine Promenade to Spurn Point.

Like every year, there is a cash prize to be won, fantastic fishing equipment and a free goody bag. The organisers have stated that accommodation is available, but you will need to book in advance for Sad-Le-Mere Holliday Village.

The Yorkshire coast

This event draws anglers from across the UK and Europe; fostering a sense of community where participants share their love for the sport. In the 2024 competition, councillor Nick Coultish stated how each year “we look forward to welcoming visitors from across the UK and Europe to our region and providing the local visitor economy with a timely boost during the early part of the year”, where the competition brings an influx of visitors which gives economic benefits to local businesses. From hotels, restaurants and shops, the EOBC showcases a vibrant and welcoming destination.

The 2024 winner, Pippen Moore (pictured at the top of this article), won with an aggregation of 4,690 fish, where throughout the three-day event he caught them on the Sunday’s event alone.

The EOBC event will also give you the chance to meet top companies within the industry, who will provide insight into all aspects of sea angling. This is a good opportunity for you to gain valuable experience and refine your fishing tactics.

I can’t think of anything more delightful than a salad to celebrate the summer season. But the UK being what is, how about something a little different? Our weather isn’t always great, so how about some of these warm salad recipes.

I find nothing more disappointing than a lacklustre salad though. If we’re making a salad, especially a warm one, I want it to knock it out the park.

Warm salads are a great way for you to get vitamins and nutrients into your diet. Although cold salads are good and refreshing, a warm salad resonates differently. The heat of a warm salad amalgamates the flavours while bringing you a satisfactory meal. With endless combinations, regardless of your preference: meat eater, pescetarian, vegan etc, a warm salad is good for all.

We’ve put together five best warm salad recipes that are super easy to make at home.

Japanese enoki warm salad with sesame dressing

Enoki (or えのき) is a Japanese term for a long thin mushroom. They are very popular in East Asian cuisines and are easy to cook. This is a hearty vegan salad, with oodles of protein-packed noodles.

Ingredients

150g enoki mushrooms
1 finely chopped clove garlic
Cooking oil (any you think best fits)
1 chopped leek
1 chopped spring onion
Grated carrot
Grated cucumber
Chopped coriander leaves
Sesame sauce
White sesame seeds to decorate (optional)

Method

Cut off the base of the enoki mushrooms (you can do this by using a knife or scissors). In a pan, heat your oil and add your garlic and cook for around a minute. Place your enoki mushrooms into the pan and stir while letting it sauté.
In a separate pan, add your grated and chopped vegetables together. Then stir-fry together. Place the Enoki mushrooms and the stir-fried vegetables together and serve in a bowl.

Drizzle sesame sauce over the warm salad, then sprinkle white sesame seeds to decorate. Sit back and enjoy the blended flavours!

I recommend adding bonito flakes to this dish to enhance the taste further (obviously not if you’re vegan!).

Warm chicken salad with feta cheese

Did you know that having chicken in your diet can help strengthen bones and has vitamins and minerals that help the brain function. It is also a good source of protein and collagen, and is well-suited to warm salads. If you’re vegetarian, consider swapping out the chicken for griddled peaches, warm beetroot, and nuts.

Ingredients

2 chicken breasts
Mixed salad leaves
1 red pepper
A handful of red cherry tomatoes
1 red onion
Black and green olives
100g feta cheese
Dried oregano
Rosemary

Method

Start by cutting the chicken into small chunks then drizzle cooking oil over the chicken breasts. Place them into the oven and let it roast for 20-25 minutes or until done.

Chop your red pepper, red onion, cherry tomatoes and olives then place them in a pan, along with the mixed salad leaves and fry to however long you think they need. Set aside and wait for the chicken to be cooked.

Once the chicken is ready to be eaten, toss the cooked chicken chunks and vegetables into whatever bowl you like to combine.

Crumble the feta cheese on top, accompanied with dried oregano and rosemary for seasoning, and you have created a yummy warm chicken salad with feta cheese.

Warm rice vermicelli noodle salad with sweet chilli sauce

This recipe is inspired by Thai cuisine. Vermicelli noodles are gluten-free and go
exquisitely with salads, intertwining with the chilli sauce which adds a richness to a warm salad.

Ingredients

2 large carrot
2 spring onions
1 cucumber
1 red cabbage
Edamame
Black sesame seeds (optional)
Sweet chilli sauce

Method

Cook the rice vermicelli noodles by following the package directions. They normally require 2-3 minutes to cook. Then set aside.

Peel your two large carrots and cucumber into thin strips, using a peeler (a knife can be used also). Next, shred the red cabbage into thin pieces and chop up the spring onion.

Sauté your vegetables by putting them into a frying pan. Then add the edamame, and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or however long you think they should be cooked for.

Assemble your warm salad, by combining the rice vermicelli noodles and cooked vegetables and thoroughly mix.

Accompany the salad with sweet chilli sauce and decorate with black sesame seeds by sprinkling them on top.

Warm salmon salad

Are you a lover of fish? A pescatarian? Then this salad is a game changer. Adding salmon to your salad is a good way of getting your omega-3 fatty acids which are known to reduce triglycerides and lower blood pressure.

Ingredients

2 salmon fillets
250g beetroot
250g tenderstem broccoli
90g watercress
250g asparagus
250g trimmed green beans
2 spring onions

Method

Firstly, cook your salmon. You can do this by using a frying pan, air fryer or putting it in the oven and letting it cook for 10 – 15 minutes. Or until the salmon can be flaked when cutting it open by using a fork.

While the salmon is cooking, chop the tenderstem broccoli, asparagus, beetroot and spring onions. Add to a frying pan to stir-fry. Combine the watercress and green beans to the pan and cook for about 3-5 minutes.

Once you think your vegetables are cooked, add to a bowl of your choice and set aside.

After the salmon is cooked, take it out of the oven and let it cool for about five minutes. Then cut the salmon into small pieces. Add the cut salmon to the stir-fried vegetables, give it a shake, and you have yourself a warm salmon salad.

For the dressing… you can pick! Some suggestions are squeezed lemon, garlic butter, or soy sauce, which is my personal recommendation.

Warm Asian tofu salad

For those who are non-meat eaters, it can sometimes be hard to find recipes that will help you get your daily protein intake. This warm tofu salad is a great way for you to bump up your protein intake, while making a dish that is equally delicious. Great news for vegans, who will love this one!

Ingredients

Tofu
1 red cabbage
2 carrots
A handful of green beans
Mushrooms
Chilli sauce
Sesame oil and soy sauce
Garlic powder
Black sesame seeds (optional)

Method

First step, prepare the tofu. Combine chilli sauce, sesame oil, and soy sauce with a sprinkle of garlic powder into a bowl and mix. Cut your tofu however you desire; small chunks, in blocks, etc. Then marinate the tofu.

Once marinated, toss the tofu into a heated pan and fry for about five or so minutes.

Add the cabbage, carrots, green beans, and mushrooms into a frying pan, and stir-fry for about three minutes.

Once you think the tofu and vegetables are ready to eat, place them in a large bowl and toss them gently to combine. Dot some black sesame seeds around the warm salad, then enjoy.
