Where wellness and the ocean meet…

From acupuncture, lifestyle seminars, ayurvedic cuisine and onboard spas and saunas, wellness is buoyant and has taken a liking for the high seas. The health cruise is here.

With a personal trainer for zero-gravity massage to guide you to fitness, while muscle and fat diagnostics help you achieve your health goals, the traditional boundaries of wellness have gradually gravitated towards voyages on the sea.

That said, since most cruise ships carry over 4,000 passengers and crew, staying healthy and fit for the duration of the voyage is not always an easy task.

Remember, a cruise ship is virtually a floating city where large numbers of people stay in close proximity, which increases the chances of infection spreading.

That is why it is important to design a wellness focused health cruise vacation that allows you to sail away into relaxation. Whilst at the same time staying committed to health and wellbeing in a state-of-the-art fitness-centre environment.

Read more: why the Maldives is a great choice in May

Choose an itinerary that is fitness-friendly

If you want to stay active and bursting with energy all the time, choose an itinerary that will allow you ways to keep up this practice. For example, a week in Alaska can stimulate fitness, as outdoor activities like dog sledding, kayaking or rock climbing can be enjoyed.

If you prefer a much milder approach, go on a Mediterranean cruise to experience natural wonders, breathtaking beaches and try a different sport each day like horse riding, windsurfing and hiking while on shore.

There are other excursions too that are designed for active cruisers such as a guided hike to the Pulpit Rock in Stavenger, Norway, or to go hiking up the dramatic limestone cliffs of Paklenica National Park in Croatia.

If you are a running fan, there are a number of fabulous urban and suburban hiking paths in Copenhagen around the Kasteller neighbourhood, or along the 17th century colourful waterfront in Barcelona, bordered by the city on one side and the Mediterranean on the other.

Wellness on the water

Take a few moments every day on your cruise to simply gaze at the ocean as there is something healing and energetic about looking at the waves and taking in the surrounding views. You can choose a comfortable spot on the deck or any of the sofas in the lounge.

Consider taking a late-night stroll around the deck before you retire for the night to watch the rays of the moon reflecting on the water for an extremely soothing visual effect. Or simply enjoy the views from your private balcony at sunrise.

Modern cruise ships come equipped with the latest state-of-the-art fitness centres to cater to your fitness routine while on the high seas for a high or low-impact body workout.

On select ships you will find indoor cycling equipment where you can pedal as hard as you want. Or you can put on headphones and join an instructor-guided, music focused workout.

Choose a Class Pass on your cruise to gain unlimited access to all the fitness classes if you want to try them all.

If you prefer something low-impact and soothing, there are a range of yoga and meditation classes available on most ships. Additionally, teachers can focus on breathing and relaxation exercises that place in the open on the deck in fresh air.

Wellness-focused cruises have sauna, steam rooms, sensory showers and heated lounge areas where you will find aromatic steam, salt healing, infrared saunas and the traditional Hammam for a Turkish inspired fitness experience.

Special diets

After an early morning workout or a sunrise run, savour some uplifting fresh juice at the ship’s cafe on your health cruise. A Mediterranean diet can also be arranged if you so please.

Here you can also try other delicious nutrient-packed juices of beet, carrot, apple or strawberry to energise you for the day ahead.

A lavish salad bar is in place at lunch and dinner from where you can create your own salad bowl of nuts, cheese, humus, roast chicken followed by a fruit plate or low-calories ice cream.

The onboard fitness professionals can also help by creating a personalised nutrition plan to cater to your needs. Contrary to what you may have imagined, a cruise is actually a great place to begin a new healthy eating regime as all the food planning and preparation is already in place for you.

Healthy cruising tips

Follow these tips to ensure the best healthy cruise ever:

Sanitise all the common areas of your states as soon as you arrive. Use sanitised wipes on the door and balcony handles, toilet seats, taps, TV remote, and all light switches.

Refrain from using the public bathrooms and return to your cabin if possible.

Sanitise your hands after meals and if you encounter someone sick, inform the medical team immediately.

On the buffet table, avoid using the service utensils and use the cutlery laid down instead.

Above all, stay hydrated at all times, avoid excessive alcohol intake, and drink only bottled water.

Flights are SO last decade! It’s time for holidays on the ocean waves…

Let’s be honest, there is something undeniably appealing about the idea of unpacking your suitcase once and letting the scenery come to you, especially when the alternative is dragging your luggage through Heathrow or waiting for a delayed train at St Pancras. But the world of cruising has changed. It is no longer just about “blue rinse” brigades playing bridge or formal captains’ tables. The options now are staggering, and picking the wrong ship is the quickest way to ruin a perfectly good holiday. So how do you choose the right holiday at sea?

If you haven’t looked at a cruise brochure in the last decade, you are in for a shock. The industry has moved on from the days when the height of entertainment was a cabaret singer and a game of quoits. Nowadays, the variety of ships sailing out of Southampton, Dover, and Liverpool is frankly bewildering.

For the British traveller, the priorities are often a bit different than for our American cousins. We generally appreciate a good cup of tea in the cabin (a kettle is non-negotiable), we tend to be a bit more reserved about enforced socialising, and we have a very specific relationship with “dressing for dinner.” Some of us love the chance to break out the tuxedo, while others think a holiday means never having to wear a tie.

The danger is that the marketing can all look the same

Every website shows happy couples clutching glasses of champagne against a sunset. They don’t tell you that on Ship A you will be surrounded by 5,000 people and loud poolside DJs, while on Ship B the average age is 80 and the excitement peaks at the afternoon scone selection. Neither is “bad,” but if you end up on the wrong one, you will be miserable.

We need to look at this logically. It is about matching your personality and your budget to the “hardware” (the ship) and the “software” (the vibe). Whether you want to sail from a UK port to avoid airports entirely, or fly out to the Med for guaranteed sunshine, here is a breakdown of what is actually on offer.

The “no-fly” resort ships

For many Brits, the holiday starts the moment you step out of the car at the port. This sector is dominated by P&O Cruises, which is effectively the national cruise line. Their ships are built for British tastes. That means the plugs are the right three-pin shape, the prices are in sterling, and there is always a decent curry on the menu.

These ships, along with the Southampton-based vessels from Royal Caribbean and MSC, are massive. We are talking about floating towns. The newer P&O ships like Arvia and Iona have glass-roofed “SkyDomes” so you can enjoy the pool even when the weather in the Bay of Biscay is acting typically British.

These are brilliant for families. The kids’ clubs are usually excellent, giving parents a chance to escape to the gin bar. The atmosphere is lively but generally manageable. Just be aware that during the school holidays, these ships are packed to the rafters. If you are looking for peace and quiet in August, this is not where you will find it. Also, be prepared for the “sunbed wars”—getting a lounger by the pool on a sunny sea day requires military-level strategy.

The traditional experience

This is a very specific niche that thrives in the UK market. Lines like Fred. Olsen and Saga (which is strictly for the over-50s) offer a completely different pace of life. The ships are smaller, often older, and they have a classic maritime feel. You can actually tell you are on a boat, not a shopping centre.

The focus here is on comfort and familiarity. The crew often feels like family—many passengers return to the same ship year after year. The entertainment is more low-key: think lectures on naval history, classical recitals, and ballroom dancing rather than West End musicals.

Dining is a structured affair. You likely have a set table and a set time, which suits people who like routine and getting to know their tablemates. If you dread the idea of using an app to book your dinner, these traditional lines are a safe haven. They are less about “flash” and more about a quiet pint in the pub and a polite conversation.

The luxury cruises

If you recoil at the thought of signing a slip of paper every time you order a drink, you need to look at the luxury sector. This is the domain of – to name one – Swan Hellenic and the ultra-traditional Hebridean Island Cruises (a favourite of the late Queen).

The sticker shock on these can be intense, but for the British market, the “all-inclusive” nature is a massive selling point. We generally hate the American culture of constant tipping and adding tax. On a luxury line, the price you see is usually the price you pay. Your gratuities are covered, the wines are free-flowing, and the minibar is stocked with your preferences.

The ships are intimate suites-only vessels. You won’t be fighting for space. In fact, the space-to-passenger ratio is the real luxury here. You can find a quiet corner to read your book without hearing someone else’s conversation. The service is intuitive but not overbearing. They know you want a slice of lemon in your water, not lime, by the second day. It is refined, quiet, and incredibly relaxing.

River cruising

River cruising has exploded in popularity in the UK, largely thanks to TV programmes showing celebrities drifting down the Danube. Viking is the big name, but don’t overlook Riviera Travel (very popular with Brits) or TUI River Cruises.

This is the “civilised” way to see Europe. There is no sea sickness because the water is flat. You dock right in the centre of Cologne, Vienna, or Budapest. You walk off the ship, do your sightseeing, and come back for a four-course dinner.

It is a very social experience. The ships are small—usually under 200 passengers—so you will end up chatting to people. The demographic tends to be retired, well-travelled, and interested in culture. It is not a cheap option, but like the luxury ocean lines, a lot is included, usually wine with lunch and dinner and a daily excursion. Just don’t expect a casino or a climbing wall; the entertainment is usually a local musician or a quiz night.

Expedition voyages

We are a nation of nature lovers—blame David Attenborough—and expedition cruising appeals to that curiosity. This is about going to the Arctic, Antarctica, or the Galapagos. Hurtigruten is a classic choice here (originally a Norwegian mail boat service), but newer players like HX and Swan Hellenic are upgrading the experience.

This is not a holiday for lounging. You are up early, putting on waterproof trousers and lifejackets to jump into a Zodiac. You are there to learn. The “entertainment” team are marine biologists, geologists, and historians.

For the UK market, Noble Caledonia is a stalwart in this area. Their small ships go to places the big boys can’t, like the remote islands of Scotland (St Kilda, Orkney) or the smaller Greek islands. It is intellectual travel. The accommodation is comfortable but rarely ostentatious; the luxury is the access to the destination.

Adult-only options

Finally, a note on the rise of adult-only ships. Virgin Voyages (which sails from Portsmouth in the summer) has shaken things up. It is very different—no buffet, tattoo parlours on board, and a “rockstar” vibe. But don’t dismiss it as just for youngsters; the average age is often in the 40s and 50s. It appeals to people who want good food and late nights without any children running around. P&O also has two adult-only ships (Arcadia and Aurora) which offer a much more traditional, quiet experience for those who want to avoid the school holiday chaos.

To help you make up your mind, here is a quick summary:

if you want a stress-free family holiday without flying, book a P&O or Royal Caribbean ship sailing from Southampton;

if you prefer a “proper” ship with formal nights and a mature atmosphere, look at Fred Olsen or Titan;

if you hate hidden costs and want impeccable service, the investment in a Luxury Cruise like Silversea or Seabourn is the way to go;

if you want culture and convenience in the heart of Europe, choose a River Cruise with Riviera or Viking;

if you want to see wildlife and don’t mind getting your boots muddy, book an Expedition voyage;

if you want to avoid children entirely, look specifically for Virgin Voyages (for modern) or P&O’s Arcadia (for traditional).

Sources and further references

For the UK market, these are the best places to check reviews and prices:

The Telegraph Travel (they have an excellent cruise section with very honest ship reviews);

CLIA UK & Ireland (the official industry body).

Pining for a bit more sun, and warmer temperatures in the winter?

If you want to escape for some winter sun and sand and enjoy the cultural pleasures of a Mediterranean cruise as well but can’t decide where to go, we’ve got you covered. A favourite of many are the iconic Greek islands, the Balearic Islands and the Canaries. So why not opt for a Mediterranean cruise itinerary that takes you island hopping to these destinations, so that you can decide for yourself?

Greek islands vs Balearic Islands

Beaches

While both islands share one essential element, the Mediterranean Sea, the beaches of the popular Greek islands are not generally as good as those on the Balearic Islands.

Even though the Greek islands are known for their beaches, there are often more awe-inspiring options on the beaches of the Balearic Islands. You know the legendary names like Minorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and the islet of Formentera, to name a few, all covered with white sand coves and crystal clear waters.

Mallorca’s Cala del Moro is one of the most stunning coves in the area, known for its dazzling sands and crystalline waters, located in the secluded area of Santanyi.

This is one beach we can pair with the Kamari Beach in Santorini because access to both is steep and tricky, but once there you can easily stay there and spend the day.

Another beach which is comparable is the Playa de Es Trenc beach in Mallorca, which is nearly 3km long. It’s very natural with no big buildings nearby, and there are even some places shrouding a small cove where you can bare all.

You can pair this beach with the Sarakiniko Beach in Milos Island, where the whiteness of the sands is reminiscent of the surface of moonscapes.

Climate

As for the climate, the Balearic Islands are less windy and the sea is generally warmer. While the vegetation on both the Greek and Balearic Islands is Mediterranean scrub, the Balearic are also generally greener. However, regarding prices, the Greek islands – with a few exceptions – tend to be far cheaper.

Nightlife

Some resemble each other such as Mykonos and Ibiza for the wild nightlife or Formentera and Elafonisos for the splendid beaches, but both are fundamentally Greek and Spanish.

Canary Islands vs Balearic Islands

Both these islands receive millions of visitors each year because of the amazing beaches and the perfect warm weather.

Beaches

The Balearic beaches are mostly white, while the Canaries mostly have black volcanic sand. Both have small, secluded coves where you can escape the crowds and be totally by yourself.

Final decision

Choose the Balearic for nightlife, short flights and when traveling with friends. Head to the Canaries for winter sun, adventure and long sand beaches.

Head to the Greek islands if you are looking for endless variety, delicious food, killer drinks and excellent island hopping cruises that allow you to enjoy the Greek culture and epic nightlife on the way.

Planning your solo adventure

The first step towards embarking on a solo journey involves meticulous planning. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or historical exploration, the planning process should be tailored to your personal preferences.

The rise in solo travelling among GenX and older has prompted a variety of accommodations and experiences catering to this demographic. From luxurious hotels in Madrid to holistic wellness stays in the Swiss Alps, the choices are abundant and designed to meet every conceivable need and desire.

Safety first

Safety remains a paramount concern, particularly for older people venturing into solo travel. Practical tips such as obtaining comprehensive travel insurance, carrying medications in carry-on luggage, and opting for accommodations that prioritise safety can mitigate risks.

It’s also advisable to stay connected with loved ones, updating them with your whereabouts and sharing your location. You should also be cautious with personal belongings and mindful of who you’re sharing personal information with.

Embracing new experiences

Solo travel opens up a plethora of opportunities for travellers to immerse themselves in new cultures, hobbies, and social settings.
From exploring the historical battlegrounds of Europe to embarking on scenic walking holidays across the UK’s picturesque landscapes, the experiences are as diverse as they are enriching.

The allure of cruises

Cruises often offer a particularly appealing option for solo travellers, combining the ease of accessible facilities with the opportunity for social interaction. With many cruise liners, such as P&O cruises, now offering solo cabins and activities designed for single travellers, cruising has become a more inclusive and enjoyable experience.

Personal growth

Beyond the thrill of adventure and the enjoyment of new experiences, solo travel is a profound journey of personal growth and self-discovery.

It allows for a reflection on life’s journey. Forging new friendships, and the embracing of a lifestyle that defies the conventional boundaries of age.

Solo travel is not just about the destinations visited, but the journey towards greater self-understanding, confidence, and the joy of living life to the fullest. With the right preparation and mindset, the world opens up with endless possibilities for adventure, learning, and personal growth

I’m wary of becoming a cliché, but it happens all too easily. I didn’t think getting married was for me, and then I met the right person. I turned 40-something and suddenly I got into gardening. When I speak to children, I sound like my mother. But would I become the tiresome travel writer who pens the perky yet tired “I didn’t think I would enjoy a cruise, but then I went on a cruise and really enjoyed it!” article?

The short answer is not quite yet, but after spending the night in Newcastle on ‘Ambition’, the second ship launched by young cruise company Ambassador, I am definitely cruise-curious.

Read more: Sam Harrington-Lowe’s spa review The Olde Bell Retford

Sustainable, stylish cruising?

Ambassador has launched a cruise ship about as sustainably as possible by refurbishing an existing ship and giving it a new name, rather than building a new vessel from scratch. “Premium value” is Ambition’s mantra. It’s not about aggressively chasing the younger Ibiza-on-the-high-seas market, Celebrity X- or Virgin Voyages-style. But the vibe isn’t God’s Waiting Room either. For starters, the decor is subdued and elegant, rather than the extremes of bling or care home chic.

There is not a wood-panelled wall, Queen Anne side-table, ludicrous chandelier, or floral sofa in sight.

The furniture and colour palette are contemporary and fresh, starting with the purple and green accents on the white hull and continuing inside with calming neutrals. The occasional pop of colour and photography where terrible paintings might once have hung. There is not a wood-panelled wall, Queen Anne side-table, ludicrous chandelier, or floral sofa in sight.

Capacity is a maximum of 1,200 passengers, which is surprisingly intimate for a cruise ship. As a bonus, boarding a cruise ship is far less of a palaver than dealing with airport idiocy.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6548" class="wp-image-6548 size-full" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/ambition-suite-resize.jpg" alt="Ambition cruise suite.
I went to see the new Ambassador

Newcastle turned on a bright, sunny day for the Ambition launch, which made pre-lunch drinks on a deck very pleasant. Over lunch, we go our first real taste of the cuisine with a creative three-course set menu, complete with imaginative meat-free options. Despite being a committed carnivore, my main course of stuffed aubergine was fantastic, reminding me of meals in my beloved Greece. And did not leave me with food envy for the fleshy alternatives.

On-board restaurant

My cabin for the night was a junior suite with a generous balcony, more wardrobe space than I have at home, velvety bathrobes, and comfy twin beds with cloud-like pillows. The bathroom was perhaps a little basic – I would have liked hand soap by the sink, the shower fittings and bath were not new, and the toilet brush handle was on double duty as the loo roll holder ‒ but you’re not going to get a palatial bathroom in a reasonably priced cabin. And who would spend an entire cruise in the bathroom anyway?

Ambition is not the biggest cruise ship out there, but it still has three pools, a fitness centre, jogging and walking track, shops that actually sell the kind of things you might need on board, six bars, five restaurants, a chilled-out spa, a charming library named after the Brontë sisters and long corridors. It’s easy to forget you’re on a ship (not a boat, I was berated for calling Ambition a boat…) because it feels like a good hotel, the occasional buzz or vibration notwithstanding. It is reminiscent of modern hotels in which I’ve had very pleasant stays in Menorca, Mallorca, Seville, Abu Dhabi, and Crete.

Ambassador’s realistic eco goals

Cruising is a travel industry sector that is not often associated with eco-friendly credentials, Ambassador has been very careful to avoid a greenwashing approach to its sustainability strategies. Instead of making grand promises of zero emissions by some far-off date, by which time the world will have changed and changed again, or claiming to have planted a copse of trees somewhere, Ambition is focused on the real steps it is taking right now.

The staff show us around (Image: Georgia Lewis)

Making big declarations is good PR, but CEO Christian Verhounig told us over pre-lunch drinks (you will never go thirsty on board Ambition…), that it is important to do practical things. Such as using cleaner-burning LNG instead of heavy fuel oil; researching alternative maritime fuels, such as hydrogen and biofuels; installing emission-reduction technologies, including scrubbers and catalytic reduction systems; recycling waste water; and optimising routes to use less fuel and reduce emissions. Ambassador’s other ship, Ambience, has already reduced NOx emissions by 95% since April 2022, with 70% reduction being the latest requirement.

It was good to know that Orca helps guests see the amazing wildlife, without sailing roughshod through natural habitats.

At lunch and the gala dinner, I got talking to Steve Jones and Kate Weston from Orca, the marine conservation charity. Orca has formed a partnership with Ambassador to provide leaders for cruise activities, such as responsible whale-watching and marine conservation talks and workshops. I didn’t realise that if you see a whale flapping its fins, it’s not the cetacean equivalent of an excited round of applause. It’s agitated and would kindly prefer it if you left it in peace. It was good to know that Orca helps guests see the amazing wildlife, without sailing roughshod through natural habitats. During these conversations, I had my cruising epiphany.

Good grief, am I a cruise convert?

Captain Lewis (Image: Georgia Lewis)

While I can see the appeal of cruising around the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, wiling away days on a poolside sun-lounger with a good book in one hand and a G&T in the other, the prospect of going on a cruise to check out wildlife in places I’ve never seen piqued my interest.

I suspect I might get a bit frustrated while cruising around my favourite European holiday spots, because I would want to stay on shore, hire a car and go on a quest for a hidden gem taverna or ancient ruins. But sailing around Norwegian fjords and Icelandic spectacles, spotting wildlife and getting to know that part of the world better is something worth spending my hard-earned on. Especially if I could combine the bucket list natural wonders with a spa afternoon, an indoor swim on a chilly day, good food, and fun entertainment. If you are not seeking obscure no-wave jazz improv or death metal for your holiday soundtrack, you, like me, can happily lean into the cheese.

And yes, there was entertainment

On my night in Newcastle, we were treated to a sample of the entertainment team’s Night in Nashville show, followed by an Abba tribute at the Cavern bar and a DJ with an Absolute Radio 80s and 90s playlist until the early hours. That’s a win, as far as I’m concerned.

As a country and western music geek, I had no hesitation in clapping along to Cotton Eye Joe, getting a lump in my throat at Jolene, and demonstrating my knowledge of all the lyrics to Take Me Home, Country Roads. There was a moment in the show where I spotted the opportunity for a seamless segue into Shania Twain’s classic Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? – I’ll let the entertainment team have that tip for free.

Despite accidentally serving myself a disturbingly vegan sausage at the breakfast buffet, I disembarked from the ship with a hankering for a longer stay onboard Ambition. If the only culinary low point was a debacle entirely of my own creation, that is a big tick for the food on offer. With room service available, as well as a good choice of restaurants, Ambition caters well to buffet sceptics.

Getting on board

One of the big selling points – with additional sustainability brownie points – is the seven regional ports of departure for Ambition’s sailings. Southampton is not one of them, which is fair enough. Unless you live in Southampton, it can be a pain to get to. Instead, you can board from Belfast, Bristol, Falmouth, Dundee, Liverpool, London Tilbury and Newcastle.

This means most UK passengers won’t have to fly anywhere, which generally works out cheaper and shrinks your holiday carbon footprint. London Tilbury would suit me well, although Newcastle, with my in-laws living here, would be another possibility. The inter-generational cruises on offer would be less hassle with multiple regional port options, as well as two disability-friendly suites, so wheelchair users and people with mobility issues can set sail too.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6547" class="wp-image-6547 size-full" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/ambition-resize.jpg" alt="Cruise ship sails to the right on blue seas with purple writing 'Ambition' across the hull.
Contemporary cruises that allow flexible dining options, autonomy when it comes to how you spend your time onboard and onshore, and offer more than bingo and a buffet will be the ones that do well post-pandemic. At the time of writing, my aunt and uncle were cruising Iceland and the Norwegian fjords – their brief but happy Facebook messages from the ship, along with my little taste of the cruise experience on Ambition, have given me a new perspective.

With a cruise, you are paying for comfort and convenience, as well as the opportunity to balance the fine art of doing nothing with trying out new activities, learning about wildlife, getting a taste of new places or revisiting old favourites. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
