And they’re not wrong; 20 degrees, blue sky, sea warm enough to get in without completely the ability to breathe, and even coming back with a tan line. But is it worth the five hour flight? In short: yes. But there’s definitely a few things to note…

Me and my wonderful best friend searched Lastminute, scouring for an affordable December holiday, some much-needed rest before the height of holiday season. Working in hospitality and events is a lot this time of year.

We wanted sun, but we were on a bit of a budget. Neither of us have any particular pull to Dubai, and South America and Asia are a little too far for a long weekend.

So why did we choose Cyprus?

Apart from the fact that with careful booking, this little holiday cost us a very respectable £150 each, we got nicely timed flights from Gatwick to Paphos and back, and a two bed apartment about a 20 minute walk from the main strip.

This was both our first time visiting the island so we didn’t know what to expect. We knew it was going to be low season, but we weren’t sure how much so. Would there just be locals, immigrants and expats, or would there be lots of tourists too? We also wondered if there was going to be an overwhelming amount of British people since it’s definitely a place that has been British-ified.

Cyprus from the air

We stepped off the plane at Paphos airport, which was small with parts still being built, from what we could tell (a recurring theme, as you will find out). From the landing strip to the walk inside, you could see brown hills spanning everywhere you looked, with dotted green trees. It was still a very Mediterranean landscape but it reminded me of hills from Chihuahua in Mexico. A welcome change from England’s cold, grey skies.

The first day, it rained

Not Mediterranean storm rain, but a smattering. Met Office hadn’t mentioned rain, and we quickly learnt not to trust the forecast. I’d say take a light raincoat though. Luckily it stopped pretty quickly, and the sun made an appearance.

The flight time from Gatwick was estimated for around 4.5 hours but it felt like we were landing for about an hour. You have to do a loop around the island to get to Paphos airport and it just felt endless. A cab via Bolt (their version of Uber) set us back €38 so not too bad. There is a bus, the 612, but it was too confusing to understand when it was coming, and we wanted to get in the sun as soon as we could.

The sun in Cyprus is in the sky for much the same time as England for winter daylight…

…maybe a little earlier in the morning, but by 5pm it’s dark, and pretty cold. It’s still 16/17 degrees but it’s definitely not micro shorts and summer vest weather.

We were staying at Arthemus Cynthia Complex which has 6/7 blocks of rooms and apartments, and four pools. I can imagine every pool is packed in the summer, but they weren’t heated and were colder than the sea. So there were a few sparse tourists (and some cats) sunbathing, but no one swimming.

I don’t know what you’d pay in high season, but for a two bed with a nice balcony and all the amenities, including a bath and a washing machine, we were very happy.

The view from the balcony wasn’t anything special, we could see the below pool, a couple of the other blocks, the Amazon Mini Mart at the end of the street, and a new block of buildings being constructed.

We were a 20–30-minute walk away from Katos Paphos main area, which houses a long strip of cocktail bars and restaurants. And even in December there’s a large number of men outside these places offering a 10 per cent discount because “you’re a such a pretty lady, oh my god.” Maybe it’s more intense because there’s fewer people, but honestly some of them would not take no for an answer. No, I don’t want to eat at the restaurant you’ve got a captive pelican outside of, thanks.

Paphos strip at night

Our first night

By the time we’d checked in, dropped our bags off, made our way down to the strip for the first time, it was already dark, and it was cold. We settled for a cocktail and one of the trashiest and cheapest looking bars, and headed off to bed.

Now, me and my friend are not big partiers. I’m more of a get up early and go on a hike kind of girl, and she’s more of a read a book in a hammock in the sun kind of lady, so we weren’t there to club, and it’s a good job too.

In December it’s like a ghost town in large of parts of the back streets. Desolate bars taken over by colonies of cats, restaurants with no lights, and the occasional sports bar with five loud British men yelling at the screens.

The main strip however is all open. There’s a large selection of places to eat, from seafood to pasta, but not much choice for genuine Cypriot food, and definitely not all that great for a vegan. I mostly ate veggie burgers, which are nice, but not anything I can’t have at home.

Vegan burglar

On day two we started the day late, I had an online zoom interview at midday, so we didn’t go anywhere prior to this for fear of not making it back on time (it went well, thanks for asking).

We decided to take a stroll down to Paphos Castle, see the tombs and all the historic bits, which was all very nice. But very quiet and not all that accessible this time of year. It’s not like stepping off the bus and seeing the pyramids, but it’s nice to see some of the islands culture. Although I feel most people holidaying in Cyprus aren’t there to learn about its history.

Read more: Why Anguilla is the best place for a Big Birthday

The walk along the strip in the day was a lot nicer than at night. Don’t get me wrong, you’re still bombarded with comments and invites, but everything looks a lot prettier. There are people busking Christmas music, iguanas and their owners sitting by the port side, and warm enough you could walk around in shorts.

I feel like they try to be festive, there’s Christmas music playing everywhere, weekend Christmas markets, light up led… boats, whatever Christmas is to you, hey? But I think being English, my idea of Christmas is cold and wet and dark, and hearing a samba remix of Feliz Navidad on repeat everywhere did feel surreal.

We went to The Harbour restaurant for dinner, where there’s a great beach biew, and they had a solid five vegan options. At this magic place, my friend got a chicken gyro filled with salad and chips for less than €4. What a win!

We enjoyed a couple of cocktails there, and then wandered on, deciding to head back up to the apartment and get evening ready. For us this doesn’t mean getting glammed up in skimpy dresses and makeup, but more extra layers as the sun was going down.

Later that evening…

We discovered Pingouino, a lush lounge with a heated outdoor space. They showed the football but it felt so far from a sports bar, and we returned for another evening. The cocktails weren’t too expensive either; I think the classics were all around the €9.50-€10 mark, which was a little more pricey than a lot of places, but the couple of extra euros made all the difference to the quality of the drinks. It also seemed to be the place that (at this time of year), wasn’t full of just British tourists, and rather locals, which was a much nicer vibe.

Pingouino, Paphos

We got a little tipsy and headed to bed, ready for a beach day ahead

Now, to spare you some disappointment if you decide to venture to Paphos, Coral Bay is not so named because of its abundance of coral, but because they thought it sounded nice.

It’s a lovely beach, about a 25–30-minute cab ride, or two busses away, with sandy and clear waters. We got there around 10am and it was still quiet, just locals going for a picturesque run or morning swim. Quite a few of them in – dare I say – the skimpiest Speedos I’ve ever seen.

The pictures of the bay in summer shows thousands of people lounging under umbrellas and the sea heaving with swimmers. In December, it’s not so much like this. The beach bar and the activity centre was well and truly closed, although you could still shower, and there were changing rooms and toilets. But if you were hoping to hire a lounger and umbrella or even a glass bottomed canoe, you’ll be disappointed.

By this point we’d learned not to trust Google Maps. A few long walks met with closed and very much not-opening-any-time-soon bars and restaurants taught us this. My best advice is maybe don’t go to that really far out of the centre, even if Google says it’s open. Because chances are it might not be – the Google listings are not always up to date.

We were determined to get in the sea

So we’d come with sandwiches and boxed wine, bikinis and rented towels, what more could you need? Obviously we got in the sea, it was crystal clear blue, and you could see shoals of little fish. The tanned locals were saying it’s too cold, but we were never going to listen.

It wasn’t warm, but it wasn’t cold by any means. I’d say it’s about as warm as late June in England. I think we stayed in for a solid 15 mins, and then lounged on the beach for a few hours, downing dodgy Cypriot box wine, and got our tan on.

We’d heard of caves the other side next bay, so we decided to walk along the coast to find them. Unfortunately we never did, and I was sad to have missed out. Maybe it was blindingly obvious, but we were too sun- and wine-kissed to see the signs?!

Either way, lots of locals and other tourists told us we’d missed out, so if you’re there, go and have a look for me?!

From beaches to donkeys

On our final day, we decided to visit Animal Rescue Cyprus, which was a 10-minute walk from our apartment. This is Cyprus’s oldest no-kill shelter, which offers sanctuary to animals like cats, dogs, horses and of course donkeys. What they do is fantastic, they help to minimise over-population in animals by neutering them. They feed them, take care of them and give them medical attention. The sanctuary can be overwhelming; there are a LOT of animals. Some of the dogs are tied up, and look intimidating, but they all love the attention. They’re tied up because they don’t always get on with other dogs, but they all have beds, food, water and shelter.

When you arrive, you just go straight in, making sure to lock the gate to stop donkeys escaping, and I would recommend only bringing food if you are confident around animals. The second you whip out some food, you’ll be surrounded by an array of large animals. I almost got my head kicked in by a horse while sitting on the floor feeding some cats, so watch out!

It was a lovely visit, but it was a hard one. They’re doing everything they can for the animals but they’re not working with much so it can feel a little bare. But like I said, all the animals were happy there and loved some pats and snacks. We made a cash and food donation, and went on our way.

Heading back to Pingouino we enjoyed some dinner, a few drinks, stroked a few passing cats before calling it a night. We had an earlyish flight and not much idea on how fast security would be through the airport. I have some nightmare flights before!

Chicken at Pinguino

On our last morning, we got booted out at 10am

So we read books in the sun by the pool and grabbed a cab to the airport. The airport is small and the technology feels like Gatwick used to when I was a young kid. No liquids over 100ml, everything separated, the oldest scanners, a whole two rows of security. It’s a small airport, but it’s got some good food options, and even an outside café/bar area.

The flight back was bumpy, we got unlucky on turbulence, but otherwise it was fine. The flight each way is just under five hours, which is a little long for a 5-day trip, but with a glass or two of wine, and a late night behind you, you can sleep through it, as I discovered.

Cyprus is well worth a visit for some winter sun. It’s cheap, it’s accessible, it’s not as far or as pricey as other locations for winter warmth, and it’s got a certain British charm. Check it out, but take a real map with you as well as your mobile.

How smart planning can make the most of a new holiday destination

Traveling to a new destination for the first time generates excitement and brings endless possibilities. Exploring unfamiliar places expands perspectives and creates unforgettable memories.

For first-time travellers, proper planning, open-mindedness, and practical strategies can turn a good trip into a great one. Understanding how to make the most of every moment allows travellers to experience culture, connect with the locals, and avoid common mistakes when travelling.

Start with smart pre-trip research

Good preparation sets the stage for a smooth and enjoyable trip. Researching the destination provides valuable context that shapes the entire experience. Travellers should look into local customs, transportation options, cultural etiquette, and currency information. This knowledge eliminates surprises and builds confidence.

Learning key phrases in the local language shows respect and will improve your communication with the locals. Simple greetings or expressions of gratitude can open doors to warmer exchanges.

Checking visa requirements and travel advisories prevents last-minute issues that can delay or interrupt plans. Smart research creates a foundation that makes every day of the trip easier and more fulfilling.

Explore top attractions and hidden gems

A well-rounded attractions itinerary includes both famous landmarks and lesser-known spots. Popular sites give insight into the destination’s identity, while hidden gems offer unique, personal experiences away from crowds. Research helps identify which attractions deserve priority and which neighbourhoods or activities provide authentic local flavour. Travellers find inspiration when reading about travel hot spots in Europe, which offer a blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty. Planning visits to must-see locations while leaving space for spontaneous discoveries creates a balanced experience. Flexibility allows travellers to follow their curiosity while ensuring they do not miss iconic sites that define the place.

Discovering hidden gems can involve talking to locals, joining walking tours, or exploring neighbourhoods beyond typical tourist areas. These experiences often become the highlights of a trip because they reveal the heart of the destination in ways that guidebooks cannot replicate.

Plan transportation in advance

Efficient transportation planning saves time and reduces stress. Understanding how to navigate a new city or region before arrival allows travellers to focus on enjoying their surroundings. Options may include trains, buses, trams, ride-sharing services, or bike rentals, depending on the location.

Purchasing transit passes or downloading local transportation apps before traveling simplifies navigation. Clear plans for airport transfers, hotel check-ins, and key routes eliminate confusion. When transportation logistics run smoothly, travellers can devote more energy to exploration and connection.

Embrace local culture through food and activities

Experiencing a destination through its cuisine and cultural practices creates deeper connections. Sampling local dishes introduces flavours that reflect history, geography, and community traditions. Visiting local markets, family-run restaurants, or food festivals provides a more immersive experience than sticking to international chains.

Participating in cultural activities such as traditional dance performances, artisan workshops, or festivals gives travellers a sense of the community’s rhythm. These activities foster appreciation for local heritage and often create lasting memories that define the trip.

Build flexibility into your schedule

While structure supports a productive trip, flexibility leaves room for discovery. Overloading itineraries can lead to exhaustion and missed opportunities. Allowing unplanned moments makes the experience feel more personal and less rushed.

Wandering through a park, stopping at a local café, or joining an unexpected event can lead to memorable encounters. Balanced planning ensures travellers stay organised without sacrificing the joy of spontaneous adventure. Leaving gaps in the schedule gives room to adapt to changing weather, unexpected invitations, or newfound interests.

Prioritise safety and awareness

Safety plays a vital role in making any trip enjoyable. First-time travellers should stay aware of their surroundings, keep valuables secure, and research common scams or risks specific to the destination. Using hotel safes, carrying copies of important documents, and sharing itineraries with trusted contacts increase security.

Avoiding poorly lit or unfamiliar areas late at night, staying informed about local regulations, and using reliable transportation services further protect travellers. Make sure you have good medical coverage and travel insurance.

Choose accommodation that supports your goals

The right accommodation enhances convenience, comfort, and connection. Location matters as much as amenities. Staying in a central area reduces commuting time, allowing travellers to make the most of each day. Proximity to public transportation, restaurants, and attractions simplifies logistics.

For travellers seeking cultural immersion, guesthouses, homestays, or boutique hotels often provide opportunities to interact with locals. For those focused on relaxation, resorts or rural lodges may suit their goals better. Matching accommodation style to travel objectives improves the overall experience.

Pack thoughtfully for comfort and convenience

Packing affects mobility, comfort, and flexibility during the trip. First-time travellers should pack versatile clothing that suits the climate and cultural expectations of the destination. Choosing comfortable shoes, appropriate layers, and practical accessories ensures readiness for different scenarios.

Organizing luggage with packing cubes or compartments saves time during daily preparations. Including travel-sized toiletries, a power adapter, and a small first aid kit reduces the need for emergency purchases. Thoughtful packing enhances comfort while traveling and keeps focus on experiences rather than logistics.

Use technology wisely

Technology serves as a powerful tool when used strategically. Downloading offline maps, translation apps, and itinerary planners provides support without depending on constant internet access. Storing copies of travel documents in secure digital folders ensures quick retrieval if physical copies get lost.

Social media and travel platforms offer inspiration and guidance, but travellers should remember to engage with their surroundings directly rather than through screens. Technology should enhance the experience, not replace it.

Learn to pace yourself

Travel involves physical and mental energy. First-time travellers often try to see and do everything, which can lead to fatigue. Pacing ensures that energy levels remain steady throughout the trip. Mixing active days with slower ones keeps enthusiasm high and prevents burnout.

Taking breaks during busy sightseeing days allows time to absorb the environment rather than rushing from one activity to another. This approach leads to richer, more memorable experiences.

Reflect on each day’s experiences

Reflection deepens the impact of travel. Taking time each evening to jot down highlights, lessons learned, or surprising encounters helps solidify memories. Whether through journaling, photography, or conversations with companions, reflection turns fleeting moments into meaningful stories.

This practice enhances awareness and gratitude. It encourages travellers to notice details they might have overlooked and helps them carry insights forward into future adventures.

Traveling to a new destination for the first time represents an exciting opportunity to grow, explore, and connect. With careful research, balanced planning, cultural curiosity, and flexible scheduling, travellers can experience both iconic landmarks and hidden gems. Smart transportation choices, thoughtful packing, and safety awareness create a smooth foundation for adventure.

Embracing local culture through food and activities deepens understanding and enriches the journey. Reflection transforms experiences into lasting memories. First-time travellers who approach their journeys with preparation and openness unlock the full potential of their holiday destinations, returning home with stories, knowledge, and a renewed sense of wonder.

Why winter destinations make perfect summer getaways.

As summer temperatures soar in central and southern Europe, holidaymakers are increasingly turning to traditionally winter resorts for their summer holidays.

Many of the regions better known for their snowy slopes offer a refreshing alternative to the scorching heat of those popular Mediterranean beach holidays.

Instead of flopping around on a sun lounger, stuffing your face with ice cream, and quaffing so many pina coladas you’re starting to look like a pineapple, it’s definitely worth considering a winter destination. Enjoy less intense climates, stunning landscapes, and a huge choice of exciting cultural experiences.

The vision…

Last December, I visited the Edelweiss Hotel in Grossarl, Austria. It was winter, with skiers everywhere and the whole place felt extremely beautiful in that sparkly Christmas card kind of way. Of course, there was no denying it was beautiful. But I couldn’t help but wonder what the place would be like in the summer.

I imagined being surrounded by lush green valleys (instead of white slopes), sipping chilled wine on the terrace, soaking up the sun but breathing in the crisp clean alpine air. Hikes and long strolls would be easier without the snow. And the summer temperatures would be far more bearable.

Summer in the Austrian Alps?

I asked hotel staff about summer at the hotel. They confirmed that it was truly stunning, and increasingly busy mid-year. Warmer too, of course, with temperatures typically in the high 20s to low 30s. More manageable than the oppressive 40 degrees increasingly happening in many parts of southern Europe.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11262" class="wp-image-11262 size-full" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Hotel-Edelweiss-in-summer-article-Silver-Magazine-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_.jpg" alt="Fancy hotel resort in alpine setting, summer time.
Their comments highlighted a growing trend: winter destinations are becoming sought-after summer retreats.

The Austrian Alps, for example, offer a perfect summer escape with crystal-clear lakes, flower-strewn meadows and hiking trails that provide a fun alternative to fighting your way through crowded coastal resorts. Beyond nature, the area is culturally rich too, from Salzburg’s Mozart heritage to Vienna’s historic palaces. Summer in the Alps also brings practical advantages; fewer tourists, better travel deals, and a wider range of activities.

An Austrian haven

At the Edelweiss Hotel, a four-star superior retreat in Grossarl Valley, it’s possible to experience this transformation firsthand. By day, you can hike trails scented with pine and wildflowers in the Hohe Tauern National Park, followed by schnitzel and apple strudel at alpine restaurants.

Featuring wooden beams and a valley-view balcony, my room felt like a cosy sanctuary in winter, but with the balcony doors flung open, it’s still cool and airy, but nicely warm too. The hotel’s wellness area, open all year round, featuring a panoramic sauna and infinity pool, offering total relaxation with views of rolling meadows. Dedicated summer programmes, including e-bike rentals and farmers’ market visits, add to the appeal, making the Edelweiss a perfect introduction to Austria’s summer charm.

Other summer wonderlands

This ‘summer hols in winter resorts’ trend extends far beyond Austria however. With each summer getting hotter and the winters milder, travellers are keener than ever to seek out new options and explore destinations they may not have considered before.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11264" class="size-large wp-image-11264" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Mont-Blanc-from-Chamonix-winter-destinations-for-summer-hols-Silver-Magazine-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_-1024x674.jpg" alt="Great Mont Blanc glacier with Lac Blanc. Location, Chamonix

A few places include Åre in Sweden, Chamonix in France, and Banff in Canada offer cool summer climates. They’re typically 20–25°c and as well as this more temperate weather, also offer healthy experiences, such as hiking, biking and cultural experiences. These destinations cater to adventurers and relaxaholics alike, with activities ranging from lake-kayaking to checking out historic towns and local music festivals.

Flights are SO last decade! It’s time for holidays on the ocean waves…

Let’s be honest, there is something undeniably appealing about the idea of unpacking your suitcase once and letting the scenery come to you, especially when the alternative is dragging your luggage through Heathrow or waiting for a delayed train at St Pancras. But the world of cruising has changed. It is no longer just about “blue rinse” brigades playing bridge or formal captains’ tables. The options now are staggering, and picking the wrong ship is the quickest way to ruin a perfectly good holiday. So how do you choose the right holiday at sea?

If you haven’t looked at a cruise brochure in the last decade, you are in for a shock. The industry has moved on from the days when the height of entertainment was a cabaret singer and a game of quoits. Nowadays, the variety of ships sailing out of Southampton, Dover, and Liverpool is frankly bewildering.

For the British traveller, the priorities are often a bit different than for our American cousins. We generally appreciate a good cup of tea in the cabin (a kettle is non-negotiable), we tend to be a bit more reserved about enforced socialising, and we have a very specific relationship with “dressing for dinner.” Some of us love the chance to break out the tuxedo, while others think a holiday means never having to wear a tie.

The danger is that the marketing can all look the same

Every website shows happy couples clutching glasses of champagne against a sunset. They don’t tell you that on Ship A you will be surrounded by 5,000 people and loud poolside DJs, while on Ship B the average age is 80 and the excitement peaks at the afternoon scone selection. Neither is “bad,” but if you end up on the wrong one, you will be miserable.

We need to look at this logically. It is about matching your personality and your budget to the “hardware” (the ship) and the “software” (the vibe). Whether you want to sail from a UK port to avoid airports entirely, or fly out to the Med for guaranteed sunshine, here is a breakdown of what is actually on offer.

The “no-fly” resort ships

For many Brits, the holiday starts the moment you step out of the car at the port. This sector is dominated by P&O Cruises, which is effectively the national cruise line. Their ships are built for British tastes. That means the plugs are the right three-pin shape, the prices are in sterling, and there is always a decent curry on the menu.

These ships, along with the Southampton-based vessels from Royal Caribbean and MSC, are massive. We are talking about floating towns. The newer P&O ships like Arvia and Iona have glass-roofed “SkyDomes” so you can enjoy the pool even when the weather in the Bay of Biscay is acting typically British.

These are brilliant for families. The kids’ clubs are usually excellent, giving parents a chance to escape to the gin bar. The atmosphere is lively but generally manageable. Just be aware that during the school holidays, these ships are packed to the rafters. If you are looking for peace and quiet in August, this is not where you will find it. Also, be prepared for the “sunbed wars”—getting a lounger by the pool on a sunny sea day requires military-level strategy.

The traditional experience

This is a very specific niche that thrives in the UK market. Lines like Fred. Olsen and Saga (which is strictly for the over-50s) offer a completely different pace of life. The ships are smaller, often older, and they have a classic maritime feel. You can actually tell you are on a boat, not a shopping centre.

The focus here is on comfort and familiarity. The crew often feels like family—many passengers return to the same ship year after year. The entertainment is more low-key: think lectures on naval history, classical recitals, and ballroom dancing rather than West End musicals.

Dining is a structured affair. You likely have a set table and a set time, which suits people who like routine and getting to know their tablemates. If you dread the idea of using an app to book your dinner, these traditional lines are a safe haven. They are less about “flash” and more about a quiet pint in the pub and a polite conversation.

The luxury cruises

If you recoil at the thought of signing a slip of paper every time you order a drink, you need to look at the luxury sector. This is the domain of – to name one – Swan Hellenic and the ultra-traditional Hebridean Island Cruises (a favourite of the late Queen).

The sticker shock on these can be intense, but for the British market, the “all-inclusive” nature is a massive selling point. We generally hate the American culture of constant tipping and adding tax. On a luxury line, the price you see is usually the price you pay. Your gratuities are covered, the wines are free-flowing, and the minibar is stocked with your preferences.

The ships are intimate suites-only vessels. You won’t be fighting for space. In fact, the space-to-passenger ratio is the real luxury here. You can find a quiet corner to read your book without hearing someone else’s conversation. The service is intuitive but not overbearing. They know you want a slice of lemon in your water, not lime, by the second day. It is refined, quiet, and incredibly relaxing.

River cruising

River cruising has exploded in popularity in the UK, largely thanks to TV programmes showing celebrities drifting down the Danube. Viking is the big name, but don’t overlook Riviera Travel (very popular with Brits) or TUI River Cruises.

This is the “civilised” way to see Europe. There is no sea sickness because the water is flat. You dock right in the centre of Cologne, Vienna, or Budapest. You walk off the ship, do your sightseeing, and come back for a four-course dinner.

It is a very social experience. The ships are small—usually under 200 passengers—so you will end up chatting to people. The demographic tends to be retired, well-travelled, and interested in culture. It is not a cheap option, but like the luxury ocean lines, a lot is included, usually wine with lunch and dinner and a daily excursion. Just don’t expect a casino or a climbing wall; the entertainment is usually a local musician or a quiz night.

Expedition voyages

We are a nation of nature lovers—blame David Attenborough—and expedition cruising appeals to that curiosity. This is about going to the Arctic, Antarctica, or the Galapagos. Hurtigruten is a classic choice here (originally a Norwegian mail boat service), but newer players like HX and Swan Hellenic are upgrading the experience.

This is not a holiday for lounging. You are up early, putting on waterproof trousers and lifejackets to jump into a Zodiac. You are there to learn. The “entertainment” team are marine biologists, geologists, and historians.

For the UK market, Noble Caledonia is a stalwart in this area. Their small ships go to places the big boys can’t, like the remote islands of Scotland (St Kilda, Orkney) or the smaller Greek islands. It is intellectual travel. The accommodation is comfortable but rarely ostentatious; the luxury is the access to the destination.

Adult-only options

Finally, a note on the rise of adult-only ships. Virgin Voyages (which sails from Portsmouth in the summer) has shaken things up. It is very different—no buffet, tattoo parlours on board, and a “rockstar” vibe. But don’t dismiss it as just for youngsters; the average age is often in the 40s and 50s. It appeals to people who want good food and late nights without any children running around. P&O also has two adult-only ships (Arcadia and Aurora) which offer a much more traditional, quiet experience for those who want to avoid the school holiday chaos.

To help you make up your mind, here is a quick summary:

if you want a stress-free family holiday without flying, book a P&O or Royal Caribbean ship sailing from Southampton;

if you prefer a “proper” ship with formal nights and a mature atmosphere, look at Fred Olsen or Titan;

if you hate hidden costs and want impeccable service, the investment in a Luxury Cruise like Silversea or Seabourn is the way to go;

If Athens and the Acropolis are on your bucket list but you’re put off by the thought of intense heat and insane crowds, this is your sign to go right now. Because springtime is the best time to visit Athens.

Usually when I step off a plane in Athens, it’s summertime. That sort of punch-you-in-the-lungs heat that you never get in the UK. It’s always a bit of a shock to the system.

It can easily hit 40 degrees in high season Athens. And in fact the only thing saving Athens from being completely unbearable is the breeze that blows off the Aegean Sea. Many Athenians abandon the city for the islands in summer, because it’s so hot inland. That should tell you something.

My springtime experience…

Firstly, I’ve had a very decent ride with Aegean (complimentary hot Greek meal and drinks, clean A360 plane with good legroom). Arriving into Athens on easyJet is a lot less easy on the old 50-plus bod, it has to be said. I’m Aegean all the way from now on.

A very decent prawn cocktail, hot pastitsio, and snacky biccie thing on board, for those of you interested. Wine not shown, ahem.

It’s heavenly stepping off the plane

Not unlike an early summer’s day in England – everything is warm, but has a light, green feeling. You can take a deep breath, draw in the fresh air, everything verdant and new, rather than the heat of summer when it’s all overripe, heavy and cloying like a black banana.

It’s early March and it’s the first time I’ve done Athens so early in the year. Before I even leave the runway and get into the airport I’m a convert.

First stop in my short trip is the hotel

I’m staying at the famous and beautifully elegant Hotel Grande Bretagne in Syntagma Square. One of the best five-star residences in Athens, and arguably the most famous, the hotel celebrated 150 years in 2024. It’s actually a Marriott now, but don’t let that put you off; it’s also a Luxury Collection hotel and retains its stately standing, with beautifully appointed bedrooms, excellent bars and restaurants, luxey pools and spa amenities, and that feeling I always want from a grande dame.

It has all its individual charm, great service, and feels every inch the traditional five star. My room also has a great view, plus the most exciting snackie drawer and well-stocked mini-bar I’ve seen in a hotel room for a long time. Bravo.

We arrive at the hotel in the late afternoon – there are a few of us travelling together – and once we’ve showered and changed, we’re all ready for some fun.

First things first; a drink in Alexander’s Bar at the hotel. This is a great place to start the evening – the bar and lounge are furnished with a nod to both Greek culture and the British theme of the hotel. I try not to feel too colonial.

The hotel, incidentally, has great views of the Acropolis. There’s an outdoor pool with stunning views of the hill and the buildings. Inside Alexander’s, there’s also an atrium where you can sit ‘outside’ and enjoy a peaceful oasis slap bang in the middle of one of the noisiest cities in the world. Cocktails all round, and then we’re definitely ready for some food. We head out into the Athens nightlife.

Read more: Why Mexico should be on your bucket list

Time for dinner and we’re off to Ergon

This is a place I’ve been wanting to visit for ages, so I’m thrilled to be at Ergon House. This isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a deli, a place to stay… a place to eat and drink and relax. The inside is set in a vast light atrium space, and the ethos is very much about local farmers and producers, seasonal foods and sustainable agriculture.

There’s even a ‘vertical orchard’ stretching up one wall of the 25-metre atrium which is worth the trip alone to have a look at. Incorporating the latest advancements in hydroponics and aquaponics, it serves as a 2.0 farming field, growing seasonal herbs such as oregano, basil, and rosemary. Unfortunately my photograph of it was awful, but you can see it on their website.

As you’d probably imagine from a place with these credentials, the food here is stunning. We pile into a range of different smaller plates; dolmades, Greek salad, khachapuri (that bread boat thing with cheese and egg in the middle), mad cheese pastries… but seeing as we’re sat right in the middle of one of the best butcheries in Athens, the obvious choice here is from the fresh meat counter.

You can pick things to eat from the deli and butchery counters – it’s an immersive eating experience – so I went for some lamb chops which were on the specials board. Sublime. And to finish off, at the insistence of the team at the restaurant, a vast quantity of local piney liqueur, Mastika, made from tree resin. This is an acquired taste, but a good digestif.

Safe to say we weren’t moving at any kind of speed after that lot, and we slid happily into digesting, chatting, and enjoying the buzz of an Athens just waking up from winter.

However, I’ll sleep when I’m dead…

I’m only in Athens for a short time so I’m making the most of it. I’ve been recommended a bar called The Bank Job. I feel it’s my duty to try it out, and my travelling chums are keen to support this noble effort. It’s only a short walk from Ergon (what did we do before Google maps?), and we’re glad we made the effort.

As you might guess, it’s in an old bank vault, with drinking spaces both inside and out, and it’s gently busy. We enjoy some really outstanding cocktails, and some freebies from the owner. I’d love to tell you his name but by this point things are delightfully hazy. Deciding to call it a night, and not ruin the next day, I slide off around 1am. Apparently I’m becoming more sensible in my advancing years.

Clearly being very sensible. Making the most of the Athens nightlife

Not sensible enough to avoid a thick head the next morning unfortunately…

But sensible enough to get up, shower, enjoy a decent breakfast and get to the Acropolis at a very reasonable hour. The site is open from 8am and I’m there before 9, because I’m wondering if there might be a bit of a queue, even at this time of the year. However, I wasn’t prepared for it to be so quiet. We paid our money, got our tickets and slipped straight through.

The Erechtheion or Temple of Athena Polias

Once on the site I could count the number of people there on one hand. It was slightly bizarre. I’ve been before but only in summertime, which is brutal. It’s so busy you can barely see the ground under your feet for crowds around you, let alone the ancient wonders.

This, then, is possibly the best reason of all to come in springtime. Late February/early March (avoiding that sneaky half term towards the end of the month) and probably well into April is prime time if you want to really see the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and so on. Not to mention a smog-free view of the city, laid out around you. It’s breathtaking, no exaggeration. Do it.

The Greek Theatre of Dionysus, and Athens beyond

Leaving the Acropolis we pottered down the hill

Already slowing into Greece pace – siga, siga, for those who know – which roughly means ‘slowly, slowly’. By this point it’s around 17 degrees, and the streets are littered with jolly dogs and watchful cats enjoying the gentle spring warmth. I pat a few lazily wagging curs. They sniff me hopefully for treats, and I wonder how they cope in the blazing summer heat. I guess they’re used to it. The road is cobbled and in very good nick. It’s also very clean.

Next up, the Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is relatively new, having opened in 2009 after a fierce architectural competition – CAD-bags at dawn, one assumes. It’s actually a lovely job, architecturally-speaking. Modern and minimalist, the design lends more than a nod to the stately Acropolis architecture on the hill behind it. And there is a lot of glass. The windows are coated and the antiquities positioned so there’s no sun damage. But the lighting throughout the building is a joy.

The museum incorporates an ancient Athenian village, built around it to both preserve and display it. Discovered during an excavation, this 4,000-square-metre insight into ancient Athenian living can be seen from the viewing platforms. And somewhat disconcertingly through the glass floors.

Upstairs you enter an extraordinary space, filled with statues and pottery findings from past civilisations, leading up to the Roman Empire. Move through and you can get up close and personal with a couple of caryatids, sculpted women who for a couple of thousand years bore the weight of the Erechtheion. And there are the strangely humbling Parthenon statues upstairs in the glass gallery. It’s quite the ride, and a must-see for archaeologist enthusiasts.

At the museum I joined a tour group

So I could traipse round and understand what I was looking at. The guide however spent half the time telling everyone how terrible the British were for stealing things. A fair point, I’ll concede, but not something I can personally fix whilst on a mini break. And her endless ranting made it impossible to enjoy the treasures. Eventually I got fed up of being told off for something I hadn’t actually done myself, and went off piste, abandoning the group. I wasn’t the only one to ditch, either.

Happier walking around at my own pace, and feeling less like a dog with its tail between its legs, I drifted through the beautiful statuary in a happy little dream. The museum is well laid out and enjoyable to walk around. But like any museum, one hits a limit eventually – or at least my lower back does – and it’s time to stop the drifting.

Thankfully, there’s a very good restaurant on site. Time for some lunch after my busy morning. Obviously the vast meal of last night and hearty breakfast of earlier haven’t quite done the trick because I’m all over this lunch like a cheap suit. Excellent wine makes my cheeks pink, and I work my way through both spanakopita and Greek salad, followed by some kind of slow cooked beef thing (not stifado) with potatoes.

I’ve impressed even myself. I’ve also knocked myself flat on my back – I grab a taxi and head back to the hotel. Time for a nap.

My ‘nap’ ends up being an all-nighter

I ended up feeling so fat and happy in bed that I stayed there. I ordered a bit of room service, and had a good night’s sleep. In the morning, we left early, and my only regret is that I didn’t get to explore the hotel further. I had wanted to swim in the pools, eat in the restaurants. But it was a flying visit, and hopefully I’ll be able to go back.

More than anything, I would urge anyone keen to see the ancient treasures of Athens to go right now, before it gets any hotter. I am here to tell you that – for this kind of experience – springtime is the best time to go to Athens.

You can introduce them to new experiences, and create lasting memories that mean the world as they get older. The key to a successful grandparent holiday with your grandchildren lies in choosing the right destination; somewhere accessible, enjoyable, and ideally educational.

Here’s a guide to help you find the perfect spot for a family adventure.

Choose the right destination

Finding the perfect spot for family holidays depends on what suits your grandkids’ interests, energy levels and age group. Younger children may need destinations that offer shorter travel times and gentler activities, while teens want to be thrilled with culturally immersive or hands-on experiences.

Accessibility and budget are also primary concerns. Research family-friendly amenities with kid-friendly accommodations, transfer services and medical facilities. This just streamlines the entire holiday and covers every base in the case of emergencies.

Family-friendly destinations

Beach resorts, city getaways, countryside ambling – there are so many great family-friendly locations that support your vision for an ideal getaway.

Portugal’s Algarve has gentle beaches that offer a laid-back atmosphere. Here, children can play in the sea while grandparents relax on the sand.

The Costa del Sol in Spain blends beach life and family-friendly attractions like waterparks and animal safaris that keep everyone entertained.

At Disneyland Paris, magic awaits children of all ages. Fun and excitement await around every corner with its rollercoasters, themed restaurants and character interactions.

Adventure holidays

More active grandparents can kick things up a notch with high-energy adventure trips. Iceland offers exhilarating pursuits with whale-watching tours, volcano visits and glacier hikes.

Closer to home, the Lake District in the UK is a haven for hiking, paddleboarding and camping, all set in some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery.

For those keen on water sports, Croatia’s Adriatic coast has everything from snorkelling to sea kayaking in a setting filled with mini-islands and crystal-clear waters.

Educational holidays

Combining fun with learning is best suited for curious grandchildren eager to know more about the world. A trip to Rome, for instance, offers an enriching experience of historical landmarks, from the Colosseum to the Vatican.

Animal lovers will adore visiting Europe’s renowned zoos or wildlife sanctuaries such as Triglav National Park and Edinburgh Zoo.

Many cities also offer “child-friendly” museum tours or interactive exhibits that bring history, science, and art to life in ways that engage children and adults alike.

Tips for planning a successful grandparent-grandchild holiday

Involve your grandchildren in the planning process to enhance their excitement

Don’t overlook practicalities like travel insurance, especially if you’re venturing into nature

Family travel experts recommend booking tickets to popular attractions in advance to secure discounts and avoid long queues

Hitting the slopes can be daunting for any first-time skiers, but the challenge often feels much harder for those who didn’t have a head start in their teens or twenties.

Luckily, progressing from greens to blues can be simpler than you’d expect. It only takes a bit of time, confidence, and a positive attitude. But it’s never too late to start skiing. If you’re ready to get out there and start living life to the fullest, check out these top reasons to start skiing for the first time in your fifties – or beyond!

Stay fit, toned and conditioned

We typically see skiing as a leisure activity for high-end winter holidays.

While it’s true that most ski resorts foster that luxury, at-your-own-pace atmosphere, skiing is a fantastic full-body workout. Whether you’re aiming to feel stronger or stand up taller, this type of exercise could tick all the boxes.

Skiing is a fantastic workout. At varying intensities, it will improve your balance, strengthen your muscles, and help you to burn plenty of calories too.

Feel healthier

Once you’ve gained some core skills, you’ll want to keep your fitness levels up!

Over time, skiing promotes better cardiovascular fitness and improves your circulation, which could make you more comfortable and energised. With greater fitness comes lower blood pressure, reducing your risk of hypertension.

You might start feeling more motivated to care for your body with rest, stretching, and mobility exercises. Yoga and Pilates, for example, are two examples of low-intensity exercise that could help you target any muscle imbalances.

Get geared up

When you’re heading to the Alps and feeling ready to impress, buying high quality kit completes the experience of Italy ski holidays. And if you’ve been working all your life so far, why not treat yourself to the best ski gear on the market?

As for your skis, it could be sensible to choose a shorter, more flexible pair. These are both easier to manoeuvre and lighter to carry, giving you more opportunities to build stamina on the slopes.

You should also try to invest in comfortable, well-fitting boots. These will be the bread and butter of your time on the slopes and everything in between, keeping your feet warm and dry in the snow. And once you’ve picked out a high-quality pair, these should last for years to come.

Learn your own style

There’s no denying that skiing is downright trendy. When you start building your skills on the slopes and adding more difficult runs to your repertoire, you’ll be instilled with a sense of confidence and a distinct style too.

And as you become a more seasoned skier, you can take refresher lessons or even lead educational sessions yourself. It’s never too late to share mountain safety knowledge with new and experienced skiers, especially when you’re sharing the slopes. Knowing your limits and keeping others safe is a huge part of winter sports.

Make lasting friendships

Finally, since skiing is an individual sport, it’s easy to overlook the social opportunities that come with it. Even if you’re thinking of going solo, it’s inevitable that you’ll bump into likeminded people and make memories to last a lifetime.

Many ski resorts are extremely accommodating for older skiers, with some offering senior discounts, slower-paced slopes, and easy access lift systems for beginners. Older adults can reap all the same benefits and hit the dancefloor at après, just like the young things.

Jacqui on bonding holidays

“With trips like this – a 12-day bucket-list adventure to Peru with my eldest daughter Ruby – it’s the memories that are most important.

“The two nights in Lima, the five-day cruise down the Amazon, the climb up Machu Picchu were all thrilling at the time. But two months later, it’s the little things; shared moments, facial expressions, silliness, laughter, re-bonding, that have stayed with me.

“On our first day in Lima, we went for lunch at a fantastic restaurant and had the best margaritas ever. On the walk back to the hotel, we got the giggles. Then on a main avenue, we spotted a purple blossom tree shedding its petals. We ran towards it, singing Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, then after a bit of a dance, skipped back to our hotel, still in fits of laughter. By the time we reached our room, we were nearly hysterical. It’s a special moment like this that you can’t really explain to anyone else: it’s just between the two of you and it’s yours for evermore.

“Holidaying with your children when they’re actually children is an entirely different experience to travelling with them as adults. It’d be strange if it wasn’t! And I wondered how my trip with my now grown-up first-born would pan out.

“Ruby was conceived when I was a very immature 25 after a whirlwind romance. Our first holiday together abroad was in 1989 when she was 11 months old. We flew with her dad and four friends (two child-free couples) to Barbados. What do I remember from that ten-day trip?

“Well, the flight was memorable: Ruby was an early walker and wasn’t happy about being confined to my lap for ten hours. So, in order to stop the wailing, her dad and I had to accompany her as she tottered up and down the aisle. She pooed seven times, and threw up four times during that flight.

Holidaying with your children when they’re actually children is an entirely different experience to travelling with them as adults

“I have no memories of the accommodation, the scenery or the beach. But I do remember the scent of coriander as we strolled along a dusty road, Ruby in my arms with her singing (in the way only an 11-month-old can) a song that I knew to be Lisa Stansfield’s ‘Been Around The World’…

“I remember me and her dad dragging her pushchair (with Ruby in it) across sandy beaches, unable to keep up with the two child-free and seemingly carefree couples, feeling collectively like the unpopular kid on the school trip… always left behind. I also have a memory of carrying her on my hip into the sea. Her tiny toes barely touched the water but she was petrified. I felt her pain and quickly retreated.

“Funny what sticks in your mind – even without photos.

“Our relationship during her formative years was unusual. She was a strident little girl and often scolded me. I thought it was funny at the time, but looking back, maybe I needed scolding.

“During her teens, I wasn’t there for her as much as I should have been. I had three younger children by then and saw Ruby as more adult than she was. I didn’t think she needed me as much as she probably did, and I was often distracted and didn’t watch over her the way other mothers might have watched over their teenage daughters. We never fell out, but we definitely grew apart.

“It was the same for me and my mum. She was often emotionally distant – detached even – and, whilst I’m not blaming her, as my role model, I realise now that I definitely picked up some of those traits. Nothing to be proud of, I know, but part of my history nonetheless.

I’m not fond of making excuses for my not-so-great characteristics but I like to give reasons for them.

“Earlier this year, I suggested to all four of my adult children that we go on holiday together. Three declined; Ruby said yes. As a destination, we decided on a once-in-lifetime holiday in Peru.

“The out-of-this-world trip included a visit to the lively capital city Lima, a five-day cruise down the awe-inspiring Amazon, and an exhausting but exhilarating climb up Machu Picchu. Plus two nights in high-altitude Cusco, staying in stunning hotels, eating food we’d never had before (cherimoya – Peruvian custard apples, which American writer Mark Twain called “the most delicious fruit known to men”) and crossing paths with some of the purest-souled people we’d ever met. It was truly extraordinary.

“I took a LOT of photos. What I remember most, however, is one of the moments I didn’t catch on camera. It’s not the rare and very memorable sighting of pink dolphins; it’s not meeting the curious inhabitants of residing in a village on the banks of the Amazon; neither is it the spectacular view from Machu Picchu… It’s the absolutely unforgettable memory of dancing around that blossom tree in Lima, violet petals falling softly and my beautiful, happy, adult daughter singing and laughing in the purple rain.”

Ruby on bonding holidays

“A message popped up on my family WhatsApp group. “I want to create new memories, to replace the bad. Can we all go on a trip together?”

“It was from my mum.

“As is the case for so many parent-child relationships, we’d been through our fair share of struggles. Younger than me, my three siblings were clearly still struggling to make peace with the past. This became evident as the replies came in politely, but nonetheless painfully, rejecting our mother’s request.

“For me though, now in my mid 30s having done years of therapy and with a seven year old of my own, my perspective has shifted. Yes, there are many aspects of our relationship and my childhood that have been hard to work through. But I also see things from her side now. How incredibly difficult it must have been to have a teenager and three under-5s, while working and traversing abuse and breakups. I also see how fast life goes by, and how precious our time together is. So while the others said no, I agreed. “I’d love to!” I typed.

“Fast forward two months and we’re on a plane to a very unexpected destination. Far from our initial ideas of lounging on a deckchair in some sunny resort, we decided to grab life by the horns and go for a bucket list trip of a lifetime, to Peru.

I also see how fast life goes by… So while the others said no, I agreed. “I’d love to!” I typed.

“This was no ordinary holiday. We’d booked with Original Travel for a mind-blowing tour, down into the depths of the Amazon jungle for a luxury (but sustainable) 5-day river boat cruise, up to the Sacred Valley to stay in the foothills of the Andean mountains, and of course to see one of the Seven Wonders of the world, Machu Picchu.

“Settling down for our 11-hour flight to Lima, I made a decision, and it felt like my mum did too. We were going to have open, honest and difficult conversations, and it was all going to be ok. Challenging moments between us would arise, but we could let them wash over and past us. This journey was all about re-connection, and, as mum had suggested, making new memories to carry. And that’s exactly what we did.

“In Lima, one of Peru’s historical capitals, we wandered around exotic tree lined streets, ate amazing Peruvian chocolate, visited a local market packed with gorgeous handicrafts, and tucked in to a meal of sea bass overlooking the vast ocean, with the best mescal margarita I’ve ever tasted in hand. We flew down to the rainforest for a 5-day river cruise. We whizzed down the waterways, with trees looming on each side, birds calling and a sky above us that seemed so much bigger than any sky I’d ever seen. My mum and I beamed at each other as the wind whipped our hair and the spray splashed our faces.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9740" class="wp-image-9740 size-full" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/file-44.jpg" alt="Mother and daughter showing off their Peruvian chocolate.
“Next was Cusco, The Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, all featuring a drastic change in landscape and experience as we took in the 360 panorama of the towering, rugged peaks of the Andes. A visit to Ollantaytambo took us up our first Incan sun temple, in preparation for the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, and also introduced us to the colourful life of those who lived there.

“Aptly, it was Mother’s Day in Peru, and celebrations were happening everywhere, with mothers, children, grandmothers and great grandmothers all gathering together to dance, eat and enjoy being with each other, just as my mum and I did the same.

“Landing home, it didn’t take long for life to resume as normal. Childcare duties, house upkeep and work replaced the once in a lifetime experience we had been so immersed in. But the memories are there to stay, a perfect and powerful start to putting the past to bed, and creating a connected, loving future together.”

A perfect blend of elegance and relaxation – and you can take the kids and grandkids, if you want…

Flying out to Zurich it was an unusually clear day. So clear that as we flew over the edge of England I could see my house from the plane. I waved goodbye to Blighty and settled in for the short journey to Switzerland. I was off to review the five star Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, hurrah.

Upon landing, the first thing I discovered was that my phone provider didn’t work in Switzerland. I’d just blindly assumed that I’d automatically get data switched over, but no.

No biggie, I figured, I’d just use the free Wi-Fi that I could see was in the airport. But connecting to the airport Wi-Fi was impossible. Log in here, add this code, no you can’t because you don’t have connectivity, log in here etc.

In the end a fellow traveller did me a hot spot so I could log in and buy some data. So be warned – Switzerland is not in the EU and your phone might not automatically work there. Plan ahead.

Leaving the airport, I was excited about my onward journey, because we had a train ticket to ride. I have a mad passion for train travel. The train was very clean and – we discovered to our amusement – very strictly silent.

In fact, our small group (all women, all quite excited) was roundly told off by a very cross little man who genuinely leapt out of his seat to tap the sign that presumably said “quiet”. We all shut up, trying not to look at each other and giggle.

I was right to be excited though…

I had a first-class ticket, and a first class view of Switzerland as we sped towards our destination. Awe-inspiring mountains rising out of stunning blue lakes, the tops so high they were lost in the clouds. It was thrilling, and I don’t say that lightly. There’s a huge benefit in feeling the power of awe, and the landscape really is awesome.

I could have spent hours on the train. But we arrived at Sargans station all too soon, and were picked up to head to the hotel resort.

Once inside the hotel I was hugely impressed. The lobby is light and airy, with a fantastic art installation of bubbles to represent the natural spa/spring water in the area. It’s upmarket without feeling oppressive. I don’t know how they manage to make such a vast hotel feel so family-run, but that’s how it rolls.

Dogs are allowed, which always makes me happy. And also kids, which I’m generally less enthusiastic about, if I’m honest. The resort is very much geared up for children though, unusual for a spa hotel like this, and I think actually it’s a nice idea. There’s a Kindervilla on site, for the children to hang out in during the daytime, as well as plenty of babysitters.

There’s also a children’s Heidi-themed spa area. So although the little darlings are allowed at the hotel, you don’t get them killing the chill in the adult spa zones. I don’t really mind kids. But don’t want them squawking next to me in the jacuzzi.

Also, something that one finds increasingly these days, despite the hotel having five stars and a very luxurious offering, guests were dressed quite informally. Not scruffy, you understand. Just in a relaxed fashion – which I totally appreciate. I’m done with heels and uncomfortable clothing these days.

My suite was a total corker

The suite was vast, situated at the front of the hotel with breathtaking views across the mountains. Standing on the balcony staring at the scenery whilst soft rain pattered around me was a quiet moment of bliss that I can still feel now if I close my eyes.

On my desk I found a gorgeous little selection of sweet and savoury snacks. And I was also delighted to find a very well-stocked fridge and snack zone. Decent gin and tonic! Big tick.

Another word to the wise: I’d felt very smug remembering to bring my UK to Europe plug adaptor, but guess what?! The plugs in Switzerland are different. At our hotel the concierge had a bunch of them you could borrow, and almost everyone in our (British) group needed one. But something to be aware of.

Standing on the balcony staring at the scenery whilst soft rain pattered around me was a quiet moment of bliss

In the afternoon we’d been due to have a tour of the outside art installations, part of the Bad RagARTz exhibition, which happens once every three years. It’s a region-wide showcase, with art, sculptures and statues dotted everywhere. Worth planning a trip around this to see it, if you’re thinking of heading here. But it was raining, so instead we relaxed, had a tour of the hotel resort, including the Kindervilla, and got ready for dinner.

As I was dressing for dinner, a storm broke out over the mountains. Storms always excite me – it was quite something, thunder and lightning over the mountains. I watched it for a bit, spellbound.

Around the resort

The Grand Resort is home to several very lovely restaurants, as well as a health and medical centre, dental centre, and of course the spa. There’s even a take-away sushi kiosk, KOiSO, which I confess to ordering twice from during my stay.

The resort is a centre of medicine and wellness, not just a place for a massage and dip in the water. There are doctors here practicing in everything from orthopaedics, traumatology and vascular disease to mental health, dental health, and Chinese medicine.

There’s also a full-service plastic surgery department, sports therapy clinic, rehab centre, nutrition clinics… you name it, it’s probably at the resort. One could absolutely have a face lift and tummy tuck, and hide out here in the mountains to recover, having regular massages, therapies, and swimming in the various pools. Have put this on my mental wish list for in a few years’ time.

Our first night, and we met in the elegant lobby for cocktails

I’ve had beautifully-made cocktails in places all over the world (she said smugly) but the mixologists here are amongst the very best I’ve experienced. Exquisitely crafted drinks, gorgeous choice of glassware – a very good start to the evening.

Namun is their Asian-inspired restaurant, and where we ate on our first night. The joy of travelling in a small group means you get to order a la carte, rather than have a set menu, which can happen if you’re in a bigger group. I had Thai prawn summer rolls, and a mix of dim sum including dumplings, melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef, and various gyoza.

Sadly I couldn’t manage any pudding, but I did choose some sake from their extensive sake-specific menu. And by the time dinner was over, I was ready to drop. The food was magic, and I slept like a baby.

Next morning the sun had broken through…

And I was chuffed to bits that I’d ordered breakfast in my room. I leapt out of bed – well, maybe not leapt, but rose enthusiastically – and before even having a cup of tea, bolted downstairs to the outside pool. I’d seen it the day before, and was desperate to get in it, to swim with that phenomenal backdrop, and make the most of the dry weather. It was heavenly.

Back up to my room and my breakfast trolley had been delivered. This for me is the height of dining delight – to eat indulgently in the privacy of my own room. I made a point of having the ‘<<verve>>’ special, so named after the resort’s Michelin-starred restaurant. If you’re interested, it’s crispy sourdough toast, with a tomato jam, and lovage whipped tofu cream, topped with poached eggs and baby salad leaves. I could have done without the jam, very sweet. But the whippy tofu stuff was magic.

Outdoor pool; <<verve>> breakfast; spa relaxation area

I was booked in for the ‘Pause and Reset’ treatment – an 80-minute aromatherapy full body workover that is “specifically designed to help ease the side effects of hormonal changes.” I don’t know about that, but I do know that I could barely stand when I got off the bed. Can’t remember the last time I felt so relaxed.

After that it was a short stagger to the spa area, where I bobbed about in the fabulous body-temperature swimming pool, before somehow making my way to my room for a short siesta. Nice to be able to wander around in my robe. It’s one of the nicest and oddest things about fancy spa hotels, I find. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to grab sushi to take up to my room. Because once I landed there, I was wiped out! Siesta time…

The afternoon saw a few activities before dinner…

Post-lunch, members of our group pottered around the local area. For me it was a chance to take in some of the outdoor art installations, and also have a little mooch around the little village next to the resort. Some of the group went to the Tamina Gorge, the source of the 36.5° C warm thermal waters that have made Bad Ragaz world famous.

‘Bad’ by the way, means ‘bath’, in case you were wondering. I didn’t know that until I came here, and I’d thought Bad Ragaz sounded a bit like a rapper’s name. But now we both know.

In the evening we were lucky enough to eat at verve by Sven, the Michelin-starred restaurant on site. I’d been excited about this since we arrived, and made the most of the exciting menu. For starter I had tomato, redcurrant, basil, and pine nut burrata plate, which was outstanding. Then for main course, a few of us shared the frankly astonishing seared beef cutlets with hoisin jus, served with seared lettuce and other bits.

A beef encounter

I know, not very adventurous in a place with a star. But frankly I think you can judge a restaurant by its steaks, eggs, custards, and sauces. I’m going to say it’s a yes from me here. The beef was meltingly delish. I wish I had two stomachs.

Our final day…

And I woke up to breakfast in my room again. I went all-out this time. Eggs, crispy bacon, caviar and a little bottle of Ruinart, my favourite champagne. How could I not?!

Oh well, if you insist

Once we’d checked out, we had a trip to Heidi’s Village, which was as surreal and adorable as you might imagine. Although Heidi is a fictional character, the stories are set in the region, and Heidi’s Village is only a short 10 min ride from the hotel. There are goats, natch. And they’ve created the houses that Heidi and all the other book characters would have lived in. It’s a bit nuts, but very endearing. It’s perfect for children who know the stories.

The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is a great place for multigenerational trips because it’s one of the only places in the world that I’m aware of that accommodates kids at an upmarket spa hotel.

Plenty of childcare, coupled with the children’s spa and pool areas, mean that you can take your kids and grandkids there and not have to sacrifice your own peaceful experience. Or enable your darling offspring to annoy other guests. And when you’re not in the hotel, there’s plenty to do within a short hop from the resort.

I loved the place, and wished I could have stayed longer. The food was exemplary, and the service and facilities faultless. I didn’t want to come home!

Now, to start planning my next visit there…
