Age UK’s recent statistics show that over 1 million older people are spending Christmas day alone this year. More than 1 in 10 people (11%) will eat Christmas dinner alone, and 5% won’t see or speak to anyone the entire day. It’s hard to be alone for the holidays, but there are ways to beat the loneliness. Here are a few of our suggestions on how to still make the most of the season. Find local events There are plenty of local events on at Christmas time to help communities connect and enjoy the holidays together. Local hubs, churches, libraries, pubs and more are often hosting festive events. You could attend a Christmas dinner hosted at a local community hub, or a carol service at your local church.

More and more of us spend Christmas alone as we get older. Here’s some tips on how to beat loneliness during the festive season.

Find local events

There are plenty of local events on at Christmas time to help communities connect and enjoy the holidays together. Local hubs, churches, libraries, pubs and more are often hosting festive events.

You could attend a Christmas dinner hosted at a local community hub, or a carol service at your local church. Or you could pop down to a nearby pub and see what events or live music are happening that day.

There are also charities designed to help communities come together to improve wellbeing and beat loneliness. Ramblers offers wellbeing walking groups, while Reengage have social groups for older folks looking to make new friends in their local area.

Chat online

If you’re able to reach family and friends online, video calls are a great way to stay connected when you’re apart. But for those who can’t, there are plenty of other ways to use our phones and the internet to connect with others.

Charities like The Silver Line (run by Age UK) offer support for people aged 55+ who are experiencing loneliness. You can give them a call, and they’ll happily chat with you, offering support and friendship in difficult times.

Whether you’re feeling down, or just want a quick chat, their lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so there’s always someone to talk to.

Make Christmas day special, just for you

Some of us aren’t up for going out on Christmas, or maybe don’t have the means to do so. But that doesn’t mean Christmas can’t still be a special day.

Why not make a delicious Christmas dinner for one (or order your favourite takeaway), or put on your favourite film with a nice glass of wine. Dust off some of the things tucked away for a ‘special occasion’ and use them to make the day a little more special.

Try to reframe the day not as one where you’re stuck by yourself, but as a day dedicated to you. Whether it’s some nice food, a good book or just a cozy pyjama day in bed, make the most of it and do something special for yourself.

Make Christmas special for someone else

Volunteering is a great way to give back to others at Christmas. Local food banks, shelters and more are always looking for volunteers, especially during the cold winter months.

By volunteering, you can chat with fellow volunteers and those you’re helping, all while making a real difference to people’s lives. Consider spending Christmas morning dishing out food at your local soup kitchen, spreading warmth and joy to those who need it most.

Not only will you be helping those around you, but you’ll boost your own mood by seeing the positive impact of your work. It’s a truly rewarding way to spend the holidays.

For more information on finding local volunteering opportunities, click here.

Let yourself feel lonely

Keeping busy can be a great way to distract yourself from feeling lonely, but it can also be good to stop and take time to feel these feelings too.

Loneliness is something a lot of us will experience this Christmas. It’s important that we allow ourselves to feel this loneliness, to take control of it so that we can lessen the power it has over us, and continue with our lives. After all, if you shine the light on darkness, it disappears.

Accept that you feel lonely, take time to understand and process these feelings. And, when you’re ready, choose to carry on.

You can find support and advice on dealing with loneliness here.

Preventing falls with good dental health Yes you read that correctly… Falls among the older people in our community are unfortunately common. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults over 65 and half of those over 80 will have at least one fall per year. Whilst most don’t result in a serious injury, there is always a risk of broken bones and more serious injuries. There can also be a loss of independence and a knock on your confidence. But did you know that keeping up with your oral hygiene can actually affect the chances of you having a fall? The link between oral health and balance A study conducted in 2018 found that poor oral health may affect your vestibular system. This is the part of your body which is responsible for balance. Your vestibular system contains sensory organs in your ear which detect information about your body’s position. Researchers found that jaw joints are essential for balance and that misalignment could contribute to falls. They also noted that having fewer teeth and not using dentures may link to an increase in falls. In fact, missing teeth are often associated with changes in bite, jaw stress, and even [...]

Yes you read that correctly…

Falls among the older people in our community are unfortunately common.

The link between oral health and balance

A study conducted in 2018 found that poor oral health may affect your vestibular system.

In fact, missing teeth are often associated with changes in bite, jaw stress, and even dietary limitations — all of which can indirectly impact balance and overall wellbeing. Beyond that, untreated gaps can lead to bone loss in the jaw and place additional strain on surrounding teeth, making early treatment essential not only for oral health but for maintaining stability and confidence as we age.

How dental health problems may lead to falls

Gum inflammation is a common issue for people of all ages, but it can have some nasty side effects. Inflammation can affect the complex network of nerves in your jaw. Not only can this cause pain and swelling, but it may also affect your balance.
As mentioned, the health of your jaw plays a large part in keeping you upright, so anything that causes it to be out of place or working unevenly can be an issue. Missing teeth can change the way you chew, for example. Causing your jaw to move in an irregular motion.

You may also find that if you have all your teeth and wear correctly fitting dentures your jaw is still misaligned. This is called TMJ disorder. Inflammation from this disorder can reach your inner ear, causing dizziness or a loss of balance.

Tips for improving your oral health

Keeping on top of your oral hygiene is good for several reasons, not just to reduce falls of course. One of the best ways is to keep on top of regular checkups with your dentist. They will be able to identify any issues before they become serious and get you treatment. Make sure you seek treatment if you have any concerns.

There are things you can do at home as well. Dentists recommend that you brush twice daily for around two minutes. You should also floss once a day to make sure you get in between your teeth as bacteria can hide there. To make this even more effective, consider getting an electric water flosser for your routine.

Having a balanced diet is important for your overall wellbeing, but it is also good for your teeth. Sugar is obviously bad for your teeth, so keeping away from it helps to prevent decay and cavities. Snacking on crunchy foods such as raw veggies helps your mouth to produce saliva which in turn washes away any lingering food particles.

As you get older, thinking about how you want your twilight years to go is unavoidable. By having conversations about end-of-life care, you can make sure that your loved ones are aware of your wishes and can make sure they are enacted. Here are some things to think about before you broach the topic. Understanding end-of-life care options Care at the end of your life can come in many different forms so it is important to be informed about your options. There are three main types of care: palliative, hospice and home-based. Palliative care typically takes place in a hospital with a specialist team that aims to manage any pain and other symptoms as well as make your life as comfortable as possible. Hospices are dedicated spaces that aren’t as clinical as hospitals for people nearing the end of their lives. They are designed for shorter-term stays, but they are incredibly kind and caring spaces.
Having difficult conversations with loved ones is no one’s favourite thing to do, but they are necessary. As you get older, thinking about how you want your twilight years to go is unavoidable. By having conversations about end-of-life care, you can make sure that your loved ones are aware of your wishes and can make sure they are enacted.

Here are some things to think about before you broach the topic.

Understanding end-of-life care options

Care at the end of your life can come in many different forms so it is important to be informed about your options.

End-of-life care can be given at home when suitable. You may have adaptations made to your home to make it as easy as possible for you, as well as having medical staff visit multiple times a day to look after you.

Initiating the conversation with sensitivity

Having a conversation with loved ones about your wishes can feel daunting. Discussing your mortality isn’t something you will ever want to do, but it is necessary.

It is important to remain empathetic to their feelings. Your loved ones may feel incredibly upset or awkward about it all. Try to keep the conversation open and honest, answering as many questions as possible.

If you are broaching the subject with an elderly relative, try to warn them that you want to talk about it. It may take a few different conversations before you fully understand each other.

Legal considerations and advance care planning

Organizing your affairs is always a good idea in case you become unable to do so later in life. There are several things you should do to protect your assets and interests.

Appoint a lasting power of attorney. This means that your nominee will be able to make decisions for you surrounding your care, health and finances. Make sure you file your application with the Office of the Public Guardian.

If you feel unsure about anything, consult with lawyers who specialise in elder law. They will be able to guide you through the different processes.

Accessing support services and resources

There are plenty of services available to support both you and your family through end-of-life care. You could seek out local respite services to give your family a break from caring for you as well as to get you out of the house and meet different people.

Counselling services are also beneficial for anyone struggling with the reality of reaching their last few years as well as their family members.

Making a journey this silly season? How to prepare your motor for festive travel

Christmas is almost upon us. Part of the joy of the season is the chance it gives us to meet up with family and friends, many of whom we might not have seen in a long time. This often means making a long trip to stay at the house of a distant relative – or perhaps coming home to stay at the house of a close one. So how should you prepare your car for Christmas travels to ensure safety?

For your Christmas driving experience to be as smooth and pleasant as possible, however, you’ll need to do just a little bit of groundwork. Let’s take a look at a few essential steps to take before you embark on the journey.

Vehicle maintenance checks

To get the most from the journey, you’ll need your vehicle to be in the best possible condition. That means checking that all of your fluids are suitably topped up, and that the car has been appropriately serviced over the last year. Test the battery and the lights, too.

The most important things to check, however, are your tyres. They should be adequately inflated. If the tread is near the legal minimum of 1.6 millimetres, they should be replaced. Look for a local vendor and fitter. If you’re based in Hampshire, you might look for tyre fitters in Basingstoke.

Planning your route and timing

You can expect to see increased traffic during the festive season. After all, at this time of year, just about everyone is travelling at once. In many cases, you can minimise delays by looking for alternative routes. In fact, there exist modern smartphone apps, like Waze, that will do this for you, while taking advantage of real-time data from other road users.

If you can make your journey earlier, or later, then you might avoid some of the congestion associated with peak season.

Packing an emergency kit

During winter, it’s easy to be taken by surprise by the weather. And if you end up stranded at the side of the road, you’ll be grateful that you packed essential items like blankets, torches, batteries, snacks, and first-aid kits. Bundle these items together in a special kit, and stash it somewhere in the vehicle itself.

Read more: how to practice safer driving

Adapting driving techniques for winter conditions

Driving techniques that are appropriate during summer will need to be adapted during winter. Generally speaking, you’ll want to drive as though your stopping distance has increased – because it has been. Make sure that you’re limiting your speed, and you’re not driving in a way that might necessitate sudden braking. Avoid tailgating, and slow down well in advance of a junction. The more experience you have driving in the snow and ice, the better – but even experienced drivers can be caught off-guard by adverse road conditions.

As parents grow older, simple tasks can become more challenging, so adding a few thoughtfully chosen appliances to their home can make everyday life easier and more comfortable. Here are five practical items that can improve their quality of life and show how much you care.

1. A stairlift for all staircase types

Climbing stairs can be a struggle for people with reduced mobility or even just joint pain. A stairlift is a game-changer, allowing your parents to move between floors really easily and, best of all, safely. Modern stairlifts are designed to fit all types of staircases, whether narrow, curved, straight, or even spiral.

Many models come with padded seats, safety belts, and remote controls for added convenience. Installing a stairlift isn’t just about mobility—it gives your parents the freedom to enjoy their entire home again.

2. An electric kettle can be a game-changer

For many older adults, boiling water for tea or coffee is a daily ritual, however; standard kettles can be heavy and awkward to handle, increasing the risk of spills or burns. An electric kettle with an easy-pour spout or tipping cradle is a safer and more practical option for them.

We recommend you look for one with a lightweight design, a clear water level indicator, and an automatic shut-off function. These features make preparing a warm drink simpler and safer.

3. A robotic vacuum cleaner

Keeping the house clean can be tiring, especially for those with limited energy or mobility. Robotic vacuum cleaners are an excellent solution, as these devices quietly clean floors, steering their way around furniture and obstacles with ease.

They’re especially useful for homes with pets, as they can handle fur without any manual effort. With options that can be controlled through simple buttons or even voice commands, a robotic vacuum takes one more chore off your parents’ to-do list.

4. A heated blanket or electric throw

As your parents age, they often feel colder, especially during the winter months, so a heated blanket or electric throw will provide warmth and comfort while relaxing on the sofa or in bed. Many models offer changing temperature settings and automatic shut-off features for safety.

This is not just a luxurious addition but a practical one, helping your parents stay cosy without having to crank up the heater.

5. A jar opener tool

Opening jars can be surprisingly difficult for those with arthritis or reduced grip strength. A simple jar opener can make a big difference in your parents’ kitchen.

There are manual tools with rubber grips that provide leverage, as well as electric versions that remove lids at the press of a button. Either way, this small gadget is a thoughtful gift that makes cooking and meal prep easier.

Small changes, huge impact

These appliances may seem like small additions, but they can greatly improve your parents’ daily lives. Each one addresses a specific challenge, giving them more independence and peace of mind. If you invest in these items, your parents really will thank you, and will be a great way to show your love and support.

Persian cat care guide: tips for grooming and health

Persian cats are one of the most beloved breeds worldwide, known for their long, luxurious fur and sweet personalities. These cats can be wonderful companions, but they also require special care to keep them happy and healthy. This guide offers tips on grooming, health maintenance, and understanding what it takes to care for Persian cats, including the Himalayan Persian cat variation.

Understanding Persian cats

Persian cats are recognized for their distinctive flat faces and round bodies. Their fur is long and fluffy, giving them a regal appearance. They are typically calm, gentle, and affectionate, making them great pets for families and individuals. However, this breed’s unique traits come with specific care requirements that owners need to keep in mind.

The average lifespan of a Persian cat is around 12 to 15 years, but with proper care, some can live even longer. This lifespan can vary based on genetics, diet, and overall health. Being aware of potential health issues is important for ensuring a long and happy life for your Persian cat.

Do you know how to speak to cats? How to parlay with your pussy

Grooming your Persian cat

Daily brushing

One of the most important aspects of caring for a Persian cat is regular grooming. Their long fur can easily become matted and tangled, so daily brushing is recommended. Using a wide-toothed comb or a slicker brush can help remove loose fur and prevent mats from forming. This grooming routine not only keeps their coat looking beautiful but also reduces shedding around your home.

It’s a good idea to start grooming your Persian cat while they are still a kitten. This will help them get used to the process and make it easier to maintain their coat as they grow older. If your Persian cat has never been groomed, be patient and allow them to adjust to the new experience.

Bathing

Bathing Persian cats is another aspect of grooming that many owners wonder about. While cats generally groom themselves, Persian cats may benefit from occasional baths to keep their coats clean and free from oils and dirt. A bath every 4 to 6 weeks can be helpful, especially if your cat tends to get dirty or has skin issues.

Use a mild cat shampoo designed for long-haired breeds, and make sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. After bathing, it’s important to dry your Persian cat gently. You can use a towel or a pet-specific dryer on a low setting. Avoid using a regular hairdryer, as the heat can be harmful.

Eye care

Persian cats are prone to tearing, which can lead to staining around their eyes. Regularly wiping their eyes with a damp cloth can help prevent staining and keep them comfortable. It’s best to use a soft cloth and clean water. If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness or excessive discharge, consult your veterinarian for advice.

Health care for Persian cats

Regular veterinary visits

Routine veterinary check-ups are important for maintaining the health of your Persian cat. Regular visits allow for vaccinations, dental check-ups, and overall health assessments. Your veterinarian can provide guidance on diet, exercise, and any potential health issues specific to the breed.

Persian cats are susceptible to certain genetic conditions, such as polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and respiratory issues due to their flat faces. Regular vet visits help catch any health problems early and provide treatment options.

Diet and nutrition

A well-balanced diet is key to ensuring a long, healthy life for your Persian cat. Look for high-quality cat food that meets their nutritional needs, focusing on protein and healthy fats. Some owners prefer dry kibble, while others may choose wet food or a combination of both. Always check the labels to ensure the food is appropriate for your cat’s age and health needs.

Portion control is also important, as Persian cats can be prone to obesity. Follow the feeding guidelines on the food packaging and adjust portions as needed based on your cat’s activity level and weight. Consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations.

Exercise and play

While Persian cats are known for their calm demeanor, they still need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and mental stimulation. Engage your cat with interactive toys, such as feather wands or laser pointers. Playtime not only helps keep them fit but also strengthens the bond between you and your pet.

Creating a stimulating environment with scratching posts, cat trees, and cozy hiding spots can also encourage your Persian cat to stay active. Make sure to provide a safe space where they can explore and feel comfortable.

Understanding the Himalayan Persian cat

The Himalayan Persian cat is a variation of the traditional Persian breed. They share many traits with Persian cats but have distinct colourpoint markings similar to those of Siamese cats. This means their ears, face, paws, and tail are darker than the rest of their body. The Himalayan Persian cat is known for its gentle nature and sweet personality, making it a popular choice among cat lovers.

Caring for a Himalayan Persian cat involves the same grooming and health considerations as standard Persian cats. However, their colourpoint markings may require additional attention to keep them looking their best. Regular grooming and bathing will help maintain their beautiful coat and prevent any skin issues.

Persian cat price and considerations

The price of Persian cats can vary widely based on factors like lineage, breeder reputation, and location. On average, you might find Persian cats ranging from $500 to over $5,000. Factors such as the cat’s pedigree and whether they are intended for show purposes can significantly impact the price.

When considering the cost, it’s also important to factor in ongoing expenses such as food, grooming supplies, veterinary care, and other essentials. Owning a Persian cat is a long-term commitment, and budgeting for these expenses will help ensure you can provide a happy and healthy life for your feline friend.
________________________________________
Caring for a Persian cat can be a rewarding experience. With their beautiful coats and sweet personalities, these cats bring joy to many households. Understanding their grooming needs, health care requirements, and potential issues is essential for any owner.

By investing time in grooming and providing regular veterinary care, you can help your Persian cat thrive. Whether you have a classic Persian or a Himalayan Persian cat, following these tips will ensure they live a happy, healthy life by your side. Your efforts will pay off in the form of a loving companion who brings warmth and joy to your home for years to come.

Many people view the Christmas holidays as a chance to relax after a stressful year. Once the nightmare of Christmas prep is over, all that’s left to do is rest and recuperate, so when the new year rolls around, you’re energised and ready to face it. But what happens when January arrives, and your burnout is as bad as it was before Christmas – or possibly worse?

If this new year has greeted you with stress and a side order of January burnout, rest assured you’re not alone.

Deidre’s story

It is a lot of food, lazing around, and socialising, which is a huge departure from my routine. I always feel like I need another week to recover from everything. I always try to make it through the holidays with as little damage as possible, and I’m mostly on autopilot.”

Deirdre says that the recovery after Christmas takes a while, but she’s learned that she needs to really take care of herself.

“I need to sleep for an entire weekend post-holidays. The first week back at work is hazy and I have to adjust and get back in gear. I am making sure to sleep well, exercise, and cook healthy meals. I am not making any big plans because my social battery is maxed out for the foreseeable future.”

MC’s story

As a London-based freelancer in the fashion industry, MC is used to burnout. Freelance work can make it difficult to maintain a clear work life balance, and MC often finds herself slipping back into work autopilot despite burnout. And with holidays few and far between, Christmas came as a welcome respite from the constant grind of work.

“There’s a freelancer’s guilt that comes when I take breaks, and feel like I’m letting down a lot of people by implementing a holiday. So with Christmas I felt good about everything and was excited to finally decompress.”

I feel like an engine that just has no more power to push on

Burnout for MC might be regular, but it’s nonetheless still debilitating.

“I usually experience burnout via complete exhaustion and fatigue,” she explains. “I feel like an engine that just has no more power to push on, and typically feel it once I’m in the thick of the burnout. Sometimes my burnout occurs hand in hand with getting ill. At the start of January 2023 [after a big project] I got incredibly stressed, exhausted, and extremely ill.

“In May 2023, I was likewise just finishing a super stressful demanding project and afterwards caught the chickenpox for the first time. I think my immune system just responds to stress like this after experiencing immense adrenaline or stress.”

Christmas didn’t fix my burnout<img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-8570" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/January-Burnout-What-it-is-and-how-to-fix-it-with-Silver-Magazine-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_.jpg" alt="Image of a white table with letter blocks that spell out "HAPPY BURNOUT".
While January did offer MC that much needed lull period, it didn’t come without its difficulties. The constant socialising left them drained and deflated by the new year, both mentally and physically. It was as if Christmas had opened the floodgates that the constant workload had held shut for so many months, leading to sickness and exhaustion.

After Christmas my body caught up with all the adrenaline rushes and social activities … I sat around January 2nd and felt completely deflated

“Unlike usual New Year ‘newness’ and ‘freshness’ I felt like an old rag that was just overused and had nothing left to give,” she explained. “After Christmas my body caught up with all the adrenaline rushes and social activities, and is coming down with it now. I sat around January 2nd in my living room and felt completely deflated.

“I had so many exciting achievements and beautiful experiences in 2023 and a part of me felt ashamed to even feel this at the start of a new year. It felt like there was a ceiling above my eyebrows that kept pushing my head down and cramping me in. I wasn’t ready to get back to work and felt like this whole cycle of work, vacation, work, vacation, work, vacation, is just unhealthy.”

With the burnout comes a whole lot more than just exhaustion. Dissatisfaction with your work, sadness, depression, frustration, and shame can all go hand in hand with burnout – and MC’s had to deal with the whole lot.

Psychology Today defines burnout as physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress. This stress can be from working long hours, or doing too many things at once. But burnout can just as easily be caused by a lack of support, recognition, or influence at work, or working towards a goal that doesn’t fulfil you.

Alongside exhaustion, workplace burnout can cause increased mental distance from your work, negative or cynical thinking and reduced productivity. All of these only make work more difficult, which can often make burnout even worse. So, for many of us, Christmas and other holidays come as a welcome break. They’re a chance to break the burnout cycle and get some relaxation in.

So if Christmas supposedly offers us a respite from our stresses, why do many of us then face January burnout?

Signs of burnout

Think you might be burnt out? Here are some ideas of what to look for.

One of the most common symptoms of burnout is exhaustion, whether it be physical, mental, emotional, or some mix of the three. Exhaustion can make it difficult to keep on top of your workload, causing further loss of motivation and stress. This stress can also make sleep difficult, leading to irritability, weakened immune system, and heightened emotional responses, such as crying. And even worse exhaustion.

As MC told us, burnout and depression can often go hand in hand, as well as feelings of shame, dissatisfaction and a lack of motivation.

“I feel the burnout usually accompanied by sadness or a depression and will sit with it for usually a week or two,” MC explained. “I’ll try to go to the gym, get my endorphins up in a spin class or treadmill walk, but often lose motivation quickly on keeping it consistent. I will daydream about going to a cafe and getting out but once it comes to doing it, I feel like it’s this massive daunting task and I’d rather stay in.”

Why Christmas doesn’t help

According to psychologist and relationship advisor Barbara Santini, Christmas often fails as a burnout remedy.

“Burnout, fundamentally, is the culmination of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” she explained. “It’s characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy.”

And Christmas, despite being hailed as a respite, does not properly address these aspects of burnout. Instead, the festive stress can make things even worse.

“The pressures of social gatherings, financial concerns, and the emotional labour involved in maintaining the facade of festive cheer can further deplete one’s already strained resources. This ‘holiday paradox’ – the clash between the idealized expectations of relaxation and the reality of holiday-related stress – can leave individuals more exhausted than they were before.”

“We adjust to a certain level of activity and stress,” Wanic explains. “Taking time off creates a new set point with lower stress and energy expenditure.”

And then, unlike December, there’s no holiday on the horizon. There’s no festivities, no merriment or excitement for the festive season. Where you may have been clinging to the approaching Christmas break, January offers no such promises. So, with no oasis in sight, the disconnect and exhaustion of burnout can be easily felt.

Plus, mindset psychologist Dr Rebekah Wanic tells us that taking a break resets your expectations of stress and activity. This means that the effort levels you could put in before the break no longer match with the levels you can put in when you get back. Your mind is prepared for much lower levels of activity and stress, which doesn’t line up with the amount of hard work you may be used to.

“We adjust to a certain level of activity and stress,” Wanic explains. “Taking time off creates a new set point with lower stress and energy expenditure. As a consequence, getting back into the grind can be extra challenging. (Think of it like the pain of going back to the gym after taking a few weeks off.)”

So we can often be left feeling dissatisfied and disappointed with our productivity levels after a break.

How to effectively tackle January burnout

Clearly, banking all our rest time on periods like Christmas doesn’t work. So how can we better protect ourselves and recover from January burnout?

…if we’re already burned out, how do we use breaks like Christmas as a helpful recovery period?

Santini offers us a few strategies, emphasising that proactive and consistent self-care is a vital part of burnout recovery. This applies to both the holiday period and working life. Burnout cannot be prevented by only resting and taking care of yourself during the holiday period. As much as many of us want to keep up productivity – whether it’s for ourselves or for others – the likelihood of burnout will only increase if we don’t allow ourselves to be unproductive once in a while. It seems like an obvious solution, but for a lot of us, hearing that we’re allowed to be unproductive can take a huge weight off. Taking time off is not only recommended but encouraged.

Christmas still remains the most consistently available holiday for most people. So, if we’re already burned out, how do we use breaks like Christmas as a helpful recovery period?

The big thing that prevents Christmas from being restful is the unrealistic expectation that the festivities will be some sort of panacea. The letdown of our ailments not being cured by some festive cheer only makes the January burnout worse. Instead of setting yourself up for New Year disappointment, engaging in genuinely restful activities with realistic expectations can allow this period to actually replenish you.

Next steps

Santini offers us a simple 6 step plan on how to recover from January burnout.

1. Conscious disconnection

Whether you’re still on holiday or back to work, conscious disconnection can help you keep burnout at bay. It’s about taking time to genuinely disconnect from work and work-related activities or thoughts. For example, not answering work calls or emails outside of work hours can help you maintain clear boundaries between work and rest. This helps your mind to take a real, beneficial break from stressors.

How to avoid burning out by saying no

2. Mindful relaxation

With the free time you have, it’s best to spend it wisely. And that means doing activities that bring you relaxation, enjoyment and fulfilment. This could be reading, going for walks, sports, or any other kind of hobby. If you constantly interrupt restful time by doing things you should be doing, it can be hard to feel truly rested.

3. Reflect and reassess

Take your downtime as time for introspection. What kind of stress have you been experiencing lately? What has been building up to make you so burned out? It could be your workload, a lack of support, insufficient rewards or any other factors. Figuring out what has led to your burnout can help you to effectively tackle it once you return to work.

4. Plan for change

Once you’ve narrowed down some of the root causes of your burnout, it’s time to address these issues. This may be through setting boundaries at work, changing your work habits, seeking support, or even planning for a career change. If you haven’t gone back to work just yet, then this may be the ideal time to begin the planning process.

5. Restorative practices

Recovery can’t all be about thinking and planning. Resting is just as important for tackling burnout, helping to reset your stress response and improve your ability to handle long term stress. Restorative practices can be any restful activity such as yoga, meditation or mindfulness.

6. Seek support

If the January burnout has truly overwhelmed you, consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Through this, you can gain numerous tools and strategies to better manage your work life balance, ease your stress and finally tackle burnout once and for all.
