Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a sensitive but common concern that many men face, yet few feel comfortable discussing it.

It occurs when you’re unable to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. While it might feel distressing, you should know that ED is often treatable and doesn’t define your health or masculinity.

Addressing it early may not only improve your sexual health but also reveal other medical issues that need attention. Continue reading to learn what may cause erectile dysfunction and how understanding these factors can help you take control of your wellbeing.

What erectile dysfunction means

Erectile dysfunction happens when the body’s normal process of arousal is disrupted. It involves the coordination of blood flow, nerves, hormones, and emotional responses. When something interrupts this balance, you might find it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection.

Beyond the physical symptoms, ED often affects your emotional confidence and relationships. You might feel frustrated, anxious, or even embarrassed, but you’re not alone. Many men experience similar struggles at some point, and acknowledging it is an important first step toward improvement.

Physical health factors

Your physical health plays a major role in erectile function. Certain common conditions can limit blood flow, which affects how erections form and last. Some of those are:

Diabetes

High blood pressure

Obesity

Heart disease

And others

Hormonal changes, particularly low testosterone, might also contribute to difficulties.

At Urocare London, specialists assess your symptoms carefully to identify whether they stem from underlying health issues, medication side effects, or circulatory problems. This ensures that treatment focuses not only on managing ED but also on improving your general health and confidence. Since each case is different, early assessment might help detect other related conditions that require attention.

Emotional and psychological influences

Erectile dysfunction isn’t always caused by a physical problem. Mental health and emotional wellbeing may also play a significant role. Stress, anxiety, or depression can interrupt the brain’s ability to send signals that trigger an erection. Relationship difficulties or performance worries might also make symptoms worse.

Addressing these emotional factors is just as important as any physical treatment. Talking therapies, stress reduction techniques, or couples counselling might help restore confidence and improve intimacy. By caring for your mental and emotional health, you can often see gradual improvement in physical performance too.

Lifestyle choices that affect erectile function

Daily habits can influence your sexual health more than you might think. Smoking, excessive drinking, poor diet, and lack of exercise all reduce blood circulation and might increase the risk of ED. Long-term stress and limited sleep can also affect hormone levels and overall energy.

Making practical changes, such as eating balanced meals, staying active, and limiting alcohol, could help improve symptoms naturally. However, lifestyle changes alone might not be enough if the problem persists. That’s why medical evaluation remains essential to rule out any hidden causes.

When to seek professional support

If ED lasts for several weeks or begins to impact your quality of life, it’s time to seek help. Clinics like Urocare London provide discreet and compassionate care, offering tailored treatments that may include medication, hormone therapy, or other advanced options. These solutions are designed to address both the cause and the emotional impact of the condition.

It’s always best to speak to a healthcare professional rather than trying to manage symptoms alone. Erectile dysfunction might sometimes signal other health issues, so an early consultation could make a real difference. Always consult with a doctor or healthcare professional before starting any treatment.

Regaining confidence and control

Living with erectile dysfunction might feel isolating or embarrassing, but effective help is available. Understanding what causes it and knowing when to seek expert care are important steps toward recovery. With medical support, small lifestyle improvements, and emotional reassurance, you can gradually regain your confidence and sexual wellbeing.

You’re not alone in this, and with the right guidance, a healthy and fulfilling intimate life is absolutely possible again. Taking that first step towards professional help can be life-changing and may restore both your confidence and peace of mind.

Accessories have the power to transform any outfit, adding a touch of sophistication and personal style. The design details of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean exemplify how a well-chosen accessory can enhance your ensemble. Platforms such as Chrono24 make it easy to see how models like this remain in high demand, with enthusiasts worldwide valuing both their style and craftsmanship.

Design elements that enhance style

The design of a luxury accessory is meticulously crafted to complement any outfit perfectly. Its sleek lines and elegant finishes harmonise with the refined textures found in high-quality clothing. This model is renowned for its distinctive bezel and innovative craftsmanship, which add sophistication to any ensemble. The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean’s precise craftsmanship reflects a commitment to quality that mirrors the effort put into tailoring bespoke garments. The synergy between the accessory’s design and an outfit’s intricate stitching or fabric choice speaks volumes about the wearer’s appreciation for detail. A luxury accessory thus becomes more than just an adornment; it is a testament to one’s dedication to elegance.

The interplay between materials and finishes further elevates the accessory’s impact on overall style. Premium materials like brushed steel, polished ceramic, and sapphire crystal create subtle variations in texture and reflection that catch the eye without overwhelming the outfit. These thoughtfully selected elements work in harmony to create depth and visual interest, demonstrating how carefully chosen accessories can enhance the sophistication of any ensemble while maintaining perfect balance.

Personal expression through discerning accessories

A well-chosen accessory can transform an outfit by offering a unique opportunity for personal expression. Wearing an exquisite timepiece allows you to subtly infuse your individuality into your ensemble. The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, for instance, is available in various designs, providing options that suit different personalities and preferences while maintaining its signature elegance.

The versatility of this model ensures it can adapt to various styles of clothing without losing its charm. Whether attending a black-tie event or a casual gathering, this timepiece complements diverse settings seamlessly. Its adaptability makes it an ideal accessory for those who wish to showcase their personal taste while adhering to dress codes.

The confidence instilled by wearing such an accessory enhances the overall impression one makes at any event. It communicates a sense of self-assuredness and respect for tradition, qualities highly valued in social settings where first impressions count. A discerning accessory becomes an extension of oneself, amplifying one’s presence through subtle yet impactful means.

Creating a lasting impression with timeless elegance

The impact of a luxury accessory goes beyond immediate visual appeal; it contributes to creating a lasting impression through timeless elegance. Investing in a well-crafted timepiece ensures you possess an accessory that withstands changing fashion trends while continuing to enhance your wardrobe effectively.

A watch such as the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean transcends fleeting trends due to its classic design elements combined with innovative features. This blend of tradition and modernity provides longevity in style, making it an investment piece suitable for passing down through generations as part of one’s legacy.

Ultimately, incorporating such pieces into your wardrobe signifies more than just fashionable choices; it represents an appreciation for artistry intertwined with functionality—qualities essential for making memorable statements at any occasion.

Worried about losing your crowning glory?

For many men – and women – hair loss may seem unavoidable as we age. Yet through a mix of lifestyle changes and medical intervention, the situation can change. Hair thinning affects both men and women, and hair loss over the age of 50 and the reasons for it are as diverse as the treatments available.

While some use diet or over-the-counter supplements, others get prescription Finasteride at UK Meds or pursue other medical options. Armed with a willingness and proper advice, you can find out what suits you best.

Basic causes of hair loss over 50

Hair thinning over the age of 50 is usually the result of a combination of genetics, hormone changes and external stressors. Men experience male pattern baldness, also referred to as androgenetic alopecia, while women experience more diffuse thinning. Hormonal changes, especially in postmenopausal women, tend to exacerbate the process.

Thyroid activity, nutritional deficiency and stress can also accelerate the loss of hair. That is why the initial part of any treatment should involve a comprehensive evaluation with a medical practitioner to ascertain the probable reason behind the loss.

Read more: Feeling burnt out?

Different medical treatment options

Among medical treatments available, Finasteride is perhaps the most widely spoken-about treatment for male pattern baldness. It is a prescription treatment for hair loss based on its ability to alter the hormonal action within the scalp. Though it does not make new hair grow for every patient, it is used as a first choice by many clinicians in the UK for patients who want to slow or treat thinning of the hair. Like any medical treatment, Finasteride does have potential side effects and varying degrees of results. It should also be considered within the context of a more enduring strategy, supplemented with lifestyle changes where possible. Other treatments may involve topical treatments such as minoxidil or more novel treatments such as low-level laser treatment.

The role of nutrition

Nutrition also serves to promote the structure and growth of the hair. Hair follicles need a continuous supply of the nutrients including biotin, zinc, iron, vitamin D, and protein in order to be strong and active. These essentials in the diet will make the existing faults in the hair particularly worse in elderly people whose ability to absorb them may lessen with age.

Increasing nutrient-dense foods such as leafy greens, eggs, nuts and seeds, oily fish and legumes can promote the well-being of your scalp and follicles. Certain people may also need supplements prescribed by a nutritionist or dietitian if deficiencies are indicated through blood work. Always ensure supplements are complemented with a well-balanced diet and used carefully when taken with other medications. It does bear mention that although diet will not reverse genetic hair loss, it can promote the scalp environment and act in synergy with medical treatments.

Combining diet and medication

Instead of considering both diet and medicines as independent solutions, numerous individuals achieve the greatest success through the integration of both in a sustainable regime. Medicines such as Finasteride can stabilise the effects of hormones causing hair loss, while nutritional changes lay the groundwork for sustainable scalp health.

This also encompasses lifestyle issues: quality sleep, decreasing alcohol consumption and exercise can all indirectly impact the health of the hair. Others will also research more natural topical treatments or essential oils, although the supportive evidence is still limited.

The importance of stress management and lifestyle in hair health

Chronic stress is also responsible for hair loss disorders, in which stress triggers more follicles to shift towards the shedding phase. Over time, unresolved stress also impacts sleep quality, hormone levels and immune system function, all of which possibly have a role to play in the health of the hair.

Simple practices such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness can bring relief from stress and calm the nervous system. Social interaction, hobbies and regular physical activities can also act as buffers to everyday tensions.

Establishing a consistent sleeping schedule is no less critical. Hair cells, like all fast-growing cells, reap the benefits of rejuvenation during good-quality sleep. Strive for seven to eight hours nightly and establish sound sleep hygiene practices: no screens in the evenings, minimal use of caffeine after noon and a cooler and darker bedroom.

Managing hair loss in your life

Losing hair over 50 can be frustrating, both emotionally and physically, but it should not have to be dealt with alone. Today’s treatment landscape provides more than just pills and serums—it presents a rounded perspective complemented by nutritional solutions and lifestyle routines.

Finasteride is still the top choice for many men in the UK through legitimate outlets with medical supervision. No treatment is a fixed solution to fit all men. The optimal strategy usually requires a combination of actions and open access to expert advice.

The first step, whether talking to a GP, shifting your diet, or just educating yourself, frequently holds the key to restoring both your hair and your self-confidence.

Key takeaways

Hair loss after 50 often needs a mix of diet and medical support.

Thinning hair in your 50s can be due to hormones, age, stress, or vitamin deficiencies. Treatments like Finasteride help many men slow down hair loss, but a balanced diet with nutrients like biotin, zinc and iron is also important for healthy hair growth.

Healthy habits like good sleep and stress relief support better results.

Managing stress, getting enough sleep and staying active can all help improve your scalp and hair health. Lifestyle choices play a key role in boosting the effects of any treatment or supplement you take for hair loss.

Combining treatments with expert advice works best.

Many people see the best results by using medical treatments like Finasteride alongside lifestyle and nutrition changes.

Speaking to a healthcare professional ensures your plan is safe, personalised and more effective over time.

Good news for those of you who treasure great threads

There is no denying that the world has shifted to casual and this shift has perhaps seemed unstoppable. It is no longer rare to see trainers paired with suits, or jeans at weddings, since fashion became a symbol of a world that no longer clung to tradition. But as we move on with the years, we see that fashion is one shaped by reflection and reinvention. And the art of formal dressing up is making a quiet, confident return. And it’s not just about looking good. It’s about choosing to show up with purpose.

Style is a statement at any age

Having style is not only about entering a new chapter in your career or celebrating milestones. It can also redefine how you simply enjoy a slower, more curated lifestyle. And here you can let your wardrobe speak for you. For many, that means revisiting what can be seen as timeless pieces that never went out of fashion, just temporarily out of focus.

Take the classic tuxedo. Once reserved for gala events and black-tie affairs, it’s now finding relevance in more nuanced, personal ways, making it sometimes casual, but always stylish. A dinner party at home with friends. A concert in the city. Even a well-dressed evening out with a partner.

It’s also about owning the moment. Silver-haired and stylish men like Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelloti are showing that elegance isn’t about age; it’s about attitude. A sharp tux worn with confidence feels less like dressing up for someone else and more like dressing in alignment with who you’ve become.

Read more: Peter Beaumont never expected to become a model at 55

Modern fit, traditional soul

One of the driving forces behind the resurgence in smart tailoring is the evolution of the garments themselves. Gone are the days of stiff cuts and restricted movement. Today’s tailoring, when made right especially in a well-constructed men’s suit, offers both precision and ease. Lightweight fabrics, unstructured shoulders, and breathable linings make the new suit as comfortable as it is commanding.

And it’s not just about events. More men are choosing to bring suits back into their everyday rotation. Paired with a smart t-shirt or a crisp white tee, and voilà! A well-cut blazer transforms into a versatile tool that will upgrade any look.

For those who value craftsmanship, brands like Suitsupply have led the charge by merging classic tailoring with modern touches. Whether it’s a three-piece wool ensemble, or a contemporary, deconstructed look, they have it all, and they want you to know it.

Dressing for you, not for them

Perhaps the most refreshing shift is that dressing up no longer has to mean dressing to impress others. It can mean dressing to honour yourself, your time, your experience. After all, you’ve earned the right to feel good in your clothes, and to demand more from them.

This mindset is especially empowering for older generations who have lived through the cycles of fashion and understand what’s worth revisiting. There’s a quiet satisfaction in knowing you can pull off a tux at 65 better than you did at 35. And not because the rules have changed, but because you have.

Sartorial sustainability

Another reason formalwear is having a comeback? Longevity. In a world increasingly conscious of waste and fast fashion, investing in a few exceptional pieces that last for years makes both ethical and economic sense. Want to show you or conscience about the environment as well as about your style? Wearing a long-lasting suit is both.

These are the pieces that become part of your story. The blazer you wore to your son’s wedding. The tuxedo you packed for an anniversary trip to Venice. The suit you wear when it’s time to celebrate something or someone important.

Elegance, redefined

Dressing well is not about chasing trends. It’s about clarity. It’s about deciding how you want to be seen, and more importantly, how you want to feel. In a world that often leans toward the quick and disposable, choosing a tuxedo or a beautifully tailored suit is a quiet form of rebellion and a statement. You could almost say that dressing up is now punk.

A quality watch is a valuable accessory, and one to consider carefully before purchasing. How could a GMT watch fit into your lifestyle?

Automatic GMT watches have a special complication with an additional hand that rotates once every 24 hours. This hand indicates the time in a second time zone, allowing the wearer to easily reference a number of places at once. These watches are complex because the movement needs to be engineered so that the GMT hand can run independently of the hour and minute hands. This is especially useful for frequent travelers or anyone who frequently needs to communicate across time zones.

Into collecting watches? Take a look at what makes an excellent diving watch

Who can benefit the most from automatic GMT watches?

Choosing an automatic GMT watch largely depends on your lifestyle. Below are some important considerations:

Travel Frequency

Automatic GMT watches can be indispensable if you make many international trips. It helps you check your home time and adjust the local hour hand when flying forward or backward between time zones. Business men and women can benefit greatly from this feature as they are required to schedule meetings in other regions.

Family and Friends Abroad

Owning a GMT watch can remind you of your loved ones scattered across the globe. Also, the fact that you can look at your wrist and know what time it is where they are might keep you close and engaging in timely conversations.

Professional Needs

Accountants, financial professionals, and global ops are often mindful of various time zones. This can be streamlined through an automatic GMT watch, and the process becomes much faster since there would be no need to consult the phone or computer for relevant times.

Aesthetic Preferences

While functionality is primarily why most people buy a watch, the design and look of a watch is paramount for many. Your style will determine whether you choose a sporty or dressy automatic GMT watch. There are plenty of styles, so you can easily find one that suits your personal wardrobe.

Durability and Comfort

Based on your job, consider how tough you need your wristwatch to be. For active lifestyles or demanding working environments, opt for watches that are durable without compromising on looks. The same goes for the watch’s fit. It must be comfortable, as you will be wearing it throughout the whole day.

Features to look for when buying an automatic GMT watch

When shopping for an automatic GMT watch, keep an eye out for a few features that enhance usability:

Independent Hour Hand Adjustment: You can adjust the local time without affecting the GMT hand, which is a great feature for travelers.

Simple Dial Design: A clean dial with simple markers allows you to read time in two zones at the same time.

Water Resistance: If you intend to wear your watch while engaging in outdoor activities or swimming, make sure it comes with sufficient water resistance.

Material Quality: Choose quality materials for durability and aesthetics, preferably stainless steel or ceramic cases.

So now you know…

When choosing the correct automatic GMT watch, one must weigh the merits of functionality against personal style preferences.

A perfect automatic GMT watch provides functionality, but it should always try to balance the other features according to his/her style. By taking into account your personal lifestyle requirements, you can find a timepiece that is more than a timepiece that is more than just a tool, but also an extension of yourself.

Want to avoid having a messy split like Eamonn and Ruth?

How do you avoid having a toxic clash when it comes to going your separate ways? Divorce is never easy, but even harder when we are older, and there’s more at stake. We spoke to Ashley Le Core, Senior Associate at Stowe Family Law about the best advice for divorce settlements when you’re both a bit older, and maybe have more assets, and longer term joint or shared finances.

Sadly, divorces can be messy. No one ever expects to be in that situation, and the dream of having a smooth amicable end to years of commitment isn’t always fulfilled.

Over the last twenty years, divorce amongst marriages of thirty years and over, have steadily risen. In 2021, 1 in 4 divorces were of couples over 50. It’s tough feeling like you’re starting over later in life, but to even get there you have to navigate the division of assets and untangle the decades of intertwined life. Even knowing how to take the first steps to broach the topic may allude many.

Ashley Le Core of Stowe Family Law says “In terms of discussing a divorce with your partner, this can be a difficult process, especially if they do not know it’s coming. If you feel able to discuss it with your partner yourself, then perhaps pick a sensible time when you are on your own. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it alone, try to ensure that you have somebody you trust with you.

“It is understandable that you may feel anxious and upset about this conversation, particularly if you have been married for many years and are heading towards or in retirement and later-life plans with your spouse.”

Managing emotions

Ashley stresses that it’s important to try and keep things calm.

“When a marriage breaks down, we would always suggest mediation as a sensible first step. It takes a lot of the emotion out of the situation. Solicitors will always advise that if there is an amicable solution to be found, then it should be pursued. A mediator can give good advice as to what a settlement would look like, and can do that whilst working with the couple together, whereas solicitors of course do not work in this way.”

But if mediation doesn’t work, choosing the right person to represent you is vital. “When choosing a divorce solicitor, build a rapport with the person who is representing you,” says Ashley. “It is a very difficult time, so deal with someone that you feel has truly got your best interests at heart. A firm with good representation, good communicators and someone who is attentive is most likely the right solicitor for you.”

Read more – Divorce later in life – financial and emotional considerations

How does it all work these days?

“In terms of the solicitor’s role in navigating the divorce, the divorce process now is more straightforward, as it’s an online process. The solicitor will of course outline to you exactly what happens at every stage, and involve you accordingly, but instructing a solicitor means that all the preparation of documentation etc is dealt with by them, and simply approved by you.”

In terms of dividing the assets of the marriage, it is important you feel ready to commence that process. It can be very in-depth, and quite upsetting

Having this support and having the divorce online takes a lot of the stress out of a split, but at the end of the day, you’re still going to be haggling over the terms. So what’s the best way to approach this? Ashley advises caution and pacing yourself at this stage.

“In terms of dividing the assets of the marriage, it is important you feel ready to commence that process. It can be very in-depth, and quite upsetting (naturally). If you’re not in a good headspace when you go into that process, it can hinder the progress you can make. And if you are not yet over the end of the marriage, or if there is a lot of animosity, diving into that process too quickly may not be in your best interests in the long term.

“Practically, once you have filed for divorce, you can take as long as you need to organise your assets and finances. This must always be done before you apply for your final order (previously known as the decree absolute), but there is no time limit after your initial 20-week cooling period.”

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9333" class="size-full wp-image-9333" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Divorce-advice-for-older-people-article-on-Silver-Magazine-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_.jpg" alt="image shows pink paper heart on black background.
Where is a good place to start?

“In terms of financial planning post-divorce, the way in which the court works in this country is that the settlement will be reached based on what each spouse needs. As such, the court will only give to each spouse what they believe they need to continue a comfortable lifestyle moving forward,” explains Ashley. So there is little point filing for divorce and asking for the moon and the stars. But a roof over your head is the first port of call.

…if the marriage has come to an end, you are effectively starting a new chapter of your life.

“The most likely effect of the divorce is a feeling of unknown financial security. If there are enough assets at the end of a marriage to rehouse both people appropriately, then that financial security is there. However, if that’s not the case and it means that both people need to review their finances in order to consider themselves comfortable, things are more complex.

“Selling the family home does end up being one of the more stressful aspects of a marriage or relationship breakdown. Often it has been a property that the couple have shared for a significant period, and letting go of that can be exceptionally difficult.

“However, if the marriage has come to an end, you are effectively starting a new chapter of your life. To start that new chapter, you potentially need to cut ties to everything that was in place before, including a house. Whilst it may be a wish to try and retain the property, I always ask people how they would feel living in a property where they have a significant number of memories, and potentially not the nicest memories.”

It it worth having a pre-nup?

“The major positive of having a prenuptial agreement is of course to protect any wealth that was brought into a marriage. If one spouse was particularly wealthier than the other, it is common practice that prenuptial agreements (whilst not legally binding yet, in this country, but considered exceptionally persuasive) are very normal in cases such as these.

“When the marriage breaks down, the prenuptial agreement takes precedence and the individual who came into the marriage with more wealth should be able to have the majority of those funds returned. There are increasingly popular for those entering second or third marriages as a way to protect property and inheritance for children from the previous marriage.”

…you should regularly review the agreement, particularly when any significant changes occur to your finances

It’s important to keep checking in on this though, as things change. “The ‘con’ of having a prenuptial agreement is that they can become massively out of date. If you agreed one pattern at the beginning and then there are significant changes throughout the marriage, it can tie the couple to an agreement that might have been made a significant number of years ago.

“This is why you should regularly review the agreement, particularly when any significant changes occur to your finances, property, or children. If you do not have a prenuptial agreement, then the court will take the standard position. Which is that – depending on the circumstances as you are at the point of divorce (i.e., your ages, any children, earning capacity, assets, future) – they will look at what each person needs and decide accordingly.

“The usual starting point for individuals who have been married for a long period and who have children over the age of 18 or no children at all, is 50/50 of all the assets.”

How does a divorce affect pensions and investments?

“The divorce itself will not affect any pensions, but it is likely that if one spouse has a larger pension pot than the other, then they may well be expected to share some of that pension with their spouse as part of the divorce process.

…any assets that form part of either person’s asset portfolio will be considered as part of the matrimonial pot, although a split isn’t always 50/50

“Usually, a pension actuary would be instructed to address how those pension pots should be split to make it fair for each spouse, and that advice should be pursued.

“In terms of investments, any assets that form part of either person’s asset portfolio will be considered as part of the matrimonial pot, although a split isn’t always 50/50. One party may wish to ring-fence certain assets due to having only just received them. Or there may be issues arising from prenuptial agreements or other such arguments. But everything will be considered by the court before making an appropriate determination.

“It is therefore very important to be categorically clear when you end your marriage as to what all assets are, where they are, and the value. The court expects complete openness and honesty about all these matters in order to make an appropriate decision. And any attempt to be seen to be hiding or dissipating assets unnecessarily, the court will usually take a very dim view of.”

Starting anew

Finding your way through a divorce is never easy, no matter what stage of life you’re at. Approach it with patience and composure, and discuss things openly with your solicitor at each step. Being equipped with knowledge can give you some confidence going through this taxing time.

My impulse purchase

In January 2020, I was relatively unhappy with UK politics. I’m not one to sit on my laurels and fret, so I bought a boat. Before I took this action, my knowledge of boating could be written on a relatively small postcard, but on 7 January 2020, I made a silly offer on a boat and, lo and behold, it was accepted.

Before I took this action, my knowledge of boating could be written on a relatively small postcard

By “boat”, I don’t mean a real boat. I mean a boat with motors. No stick. No rag. But you can’t really sail on the River Thames anyway, so it fitted my needs well. Then it occurred to me that I needed to take the boat somewhere that wasn’t England. France was only 21 miles away.

So, I started the process of gaining the documentation and knowledge required to exit the UK, cross the channel, and traverse France all the way to the Mediterranean. You need appropriate insurance, an International Certificate of Competence, which is attained by passing the CEVNI test (that stands for Code Europeen des Voies de Navigation Interieure, in case you’re interested). And a resounding belief that anything is possible. Simples.

So… I’m doing the impossible…

At 2:30pm on Saturday 26 June, I exited Ramsgate Marina for the last time. My adventure had officially commenced. Four hours later, I was in France. I paused in the lovely town of Calais for a few days to get my bearings, before setting off south towards Paris. On the boat.

My adventure was paused slightly in the city of St Omer because a large lock gate was being replaced, so I took the opportunity to get to know France better. I bought a bicycle and explored the local hood. A major problem with France is that the bread and baguettes are so delicious that it’s tempting to just eat them instead of actual meals. But I have almost infinite willpower and ate some other foodstuffs as well.

While I was there, I shot a music video for one of my neighbours. And that ended up paying for my entire stay and a full tank of diesel.

On Thursday 19 August 2021, I arrived in Paris. My intention was to spend one week there, but it was so nice, I stayed for six weeks. My home base was the Paris Arsenal Marina, just south of the Bastille. It costs about €45 a night, but considering my location, that seemed relatively inexpensive. While I was there, I shot a music video for one of my neighbours. And that ended up paying for my entire stay and a full tank of diesel.

Before embarking on this adventure, I tuned up my filmmaking skills and created a YouTube channel. I did this because I like making little films. And I like to encourage people to do stuff out of their comfort zone. No one ever died thinking they should have been less adventurous. Well, maybe a couple of people, but they’re probably not with us anymore, and at least they died happy(ish).

The high point of Paris was a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I’ve been to Paris many times before, but never made it up there. It’s mind-blowingly beautiful.

You’ve probably heard that the French are not as friendly as they could be. Let me dispel that myth right away. The French people were amazingly friendly and helpful. I never came across one bad attitude the whole time I was there. However, the thing about journeys is you have to keep moving. By the end of September, it was time to leave my new favourite city and continue the voyage south.

Time to leave Paris…

I paused in Chartrettes in the Île-de-France region, waiting for my friend Beanie to join me, then we headed south again. You do not need two people on board to negotiate French waterways, but a second pair of hands is useful when transiting through locks. Useful, but not essential.

I became quite adept at manoeuvring through locks solo. I’d probably only negotiated four or five locks before I hit France. I scooted my way through 216 of them before I got to the Mediterranean.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8646" class="wp-image-8646 size-full" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/One-mans-journey-through-France-as-an-amateur-boat-sailor-youre-never-too-old-to-go-on-an-adventure.-Read-on-Silver-Mag-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_.jpeg" alt="Boat heads through the river in central France.
Another pause was taken in Montargis in the Centre-Val de Loire Région because of bridge maintenance. We nabbed a great mooring spot in the middle of town. Someone from the VNF, France’s navigation authority, popped by to let me know I could stay as long as I needed and they would provide free power and water. To use French waterways, you need a vignette that costs €126 per month. Total bargain.

Montargis

Many people have asked me how much I spent on diesel and the answer is that I really don’t know. I never kept track of it because what would be the point? It’s not like I could do it cheaper, so I saved time by not bothering to work it out. If I had to guess, I probably used less than one litre per kilometre. If there was some distance between locks, I turned off one motor. It really didn’t need much throttle to stick to the four-knot speed limit.

Finally hitting the sea down South…

Other notable stops along the way were Briare, Nevers, Chalon-sur-Saone, Lyon and Viviers. France is a wonderful country and I highly recommend it, especially by boat. Don’t worry if, like me, your initial boating skills could be written on a postcard. It’s quite easy to rent a boat and spend a week on the water learning a new skill.

It took me a year to reach salty water again. It could’ve taken less time to reach the Mediterranean, but I didn’t buy a boat to get places fast. I might be a little old, but I’m not dead yet and have more skills to learn. Maybe I’ll try BASE jumping. Maybe not.

Despite my earlier remarks, I might not actually have unlimited willpower. It might be safer to stick to boating, filmmaking, and photography…

Peter Beaumont never thought he would be swapping food for fashion when he retired as a chef and became a model

But a chance encounter a few years ago now means he’s more likely to be seen on the catwalk than in the kitchen. He never expected to be a model over 50, but fate had other ideas in store.

Ten years after taking early retirement at 55, a stranger approached Peter Beaumont on Peckham High Street and asked if he would consider modelling. Wearing old jeans and an anorak, Peter says the question was unexpected and shocking. Yes, Naomi, Gisele and Moss kickstarted their modelling careers after being spotted by scouts. But they were leggy beauties in their teens!

Peter was 65 with the looks and cynicism that come with age

“We’re all familiar with the patter,” grins Peter, who spent 37 years working as a chef at St Thomas’s Hospital in the shadows of the Houses of Parliament.

“Someone flatters you into thinking you can make it as a model. You pay £500 for a portfolio, then the agent disappears. But I thought it only happened to teenage girls. I don’t have the traditional looks of a male model, which was even more reason to feel sceptical,” he says.

Peter told the man to p**s off. But they exchanged contact details anyway and he smiled to himself as he anticipated a record number of laughing emojis from friends and family once he’d shared this encounter on his WhatsApp groups.

However, it didn’t end there. Peter received an email from the man he’d met, asking him to attend a casting to see if he was suitable to join his agency.

Still suspicious, Peter decided to check it out anyway. With his free bus pass, an old A-Z of London and nothing better to do that day, Peter travelled from his home in Brixton, South London, to the location of the casting. When he got to the address in Hackney, East London, he wasn’t impressed.

“It looked like a rundown old garage and there were around 100 others queuing at the door.”

The photographer took a series of shots and his measurements were noted

“I left thinking that if I never heard from them again, I had enjoyed my day out.”

But once again, it didn’t end there. The agency photos resulted in his first modelling job on 26 July 2019. Precisely 37 years after he started his professional life as a hospital cook. It was a fashion shoot for Buffalo Zine, a high-end fashion and lifestyle magazine. Peter was a natural. He wasn’t just a model over 50, he was a model over 65!

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8206" class="size-full wp-image-8206" src="https://silvermagazine.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Peter-Beaumont-How-he-became-a-model-during-retirement-at-65-Silver-Magazine-www.silvermagazine.co_.uk_.png" alt="3 images of 65 year old Peter Beaumont.
“I think photographers like me because I don’t know better than them, or claim to. I enjoy myself and I just do as I am told. When you’re the model, you are plasticine; chin up, chin down, turn, twist your hips. I never complain, even when I had to wear underpants, flip-flops and a towel for an outdoor shoot on the coldest day of the year. My hair has been dyed pink, I’ve been dressed in very expensive women’s clothing. And I even do nudity if that’s what they want, but I draw the line at pornography.”

“There must be something about me that these fashion people like. But when I look in the mirror, I don’t understand it.”

Read more: Jeff Goldblum – get his party look

The start of his success as a model over 50

Since that first shoot, Peter has modelled for Vivienne Westwood, Harrington Jackets, and Clarks Shoes amongst others. And he has also appeared in a couple of pop videos. Once for the artist Silas Armstrong for his song Deluded, and another time for Celeste’s Little Runaway.

Peter modelling Yang Li, Gucci, Chanel, Cerruti…

“I was shortlisted for an underwear shoot in New York this year. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t someone who was better suited in the whole of America. All my jobs to date have been in London, so I’m glad I didn’t get the New York gig, as I don’t enjoy travelling.

“Another time, Gucci wanted me in Milan but I had promised to cook for a charity dinner and a promise is a promise. My agent was furious with me.

“When there’s a group of us on a shoot, I am always the oldest model. And now that I have been modelling for four years, I’m sometimes the most experienced, too.

“On a recent shoot the stylist gathered everyone around before we started and said, I want you to take the lead from Peter because he has been doing this for a number of years and he’s such a professional. Apparently, I was paid more than the others, too.”

Otherwise, Peter says he is not treated any differently from the younger models

“I don’t have any age-related aches and pains. Go to the gym every day, swim most days. And I have a healthy diet after a heart attack 12 years ago. I don’t know how a 70 year old is supposed to feel. I have never been 70 before.

Menorca. L-R: Peter and his Goddaughter Roushanna

Peter says the phone doesn’t ring every day but he gets regular bookings and the money’s better than his old job. As a model over 50, his best paid bookings have been two for Vivienne Westwood when he received £1,000 a time.

He used the money to treat five friends to a holiday to Tenerife earlier this year and he took three of his 40 godchildren to Menorca in August.

“I’m single and live a simple life. I don’t have lavish tastes. So what else am I going to do with the money? I can’t take it with me.”

And the glamorous lifestyle? Does Peter find that addictive?

“There’s no room for divas. I often have to wear clothes – samples – that have been worn multiple times before without being washed. You can tell because of the smell! It’s the opposite of glamorous.

“We are there to show off what the client wants you to show off – clothes, shoes, glasses – not for you to show off.

“I have met some wonderful people – they are nothing like the characters you see on TV. My friends think the fashion world is made up of models and editors who turn up for a shoot in nine inch heels and fabulous designer clothes. But they’re more likely to be wearing a cardigan and trainers and arrive straight off the tube or a bicycle.

Peter’s random encounter on that South London street has led to a retirement side hustle that’s not just brought fun to his life but also to those closest to him.

“If my agent got rid of me tomorrow or said they would only keep me on the books if I had a nip and tuck, I’d simply come off the books,” says Peter

“I still find the whole thing pretty crazy. I never ever thought I would spend my retirement modelling but I am very grateful and honoured whenever I am chosen.“

Men’s health in winter is vital to keep on top of, and self-care for men can be overlooked. But with the added pressures of the cost-of-living crisis, investing in yourself is more important than ever before.

You don’t need to replace your usual hobbies – instead, try to see a new routine as an enrichment to the way you live now. It’s never too late to start caring for your body, health, and mind. Here’s how you can get started and feel better this winter.

Self-care for men: Four simple steps towards becoming your best self

1. Style your hair

Refreshing your hairstyle can be one of the most effective ways to feel better. Winter often calls for major haircuts, especially if your hair is dry or starting to grow out beyond a length that’s easy to maintain.

By styling your hair, you can feel ready to tackle almost anything the day throws at you. If you’ve had your confidence knocked by a period of thinning or balding, specialised products like hair building fibres could help you to get back on track and feel unstoppable again.

2. Find a winter skincare routine

Your skin and hair might need more maintenance through colder weather, especially if you’re working long hours outside. Following a skincare routine will help you show off that healthy glow all through the season, no matter how extreme the outdoor conditions become.

Nourished skin not only helps you to appear healthy but could even make you look younger too. Of course, there’s a confidence-boosting element to having clear skin, too. When you feel more presentable, especially at work, you’ll be able to handle any task with enthusiasm and vigour.

Read more: Collagen for pro-ageing skincare

3. Improve your posture

The way you carry yourself could influence the way you feel throughout the day. Scientific studies suggest that improving your posture not only helps your body but has been linked to higher brain processing speeds and positive mood changes.

And improving your posture couldn’t be more straightforward. A few of the quick ways to fix your posture include:

Sit properly: If you have a job that requires you to spend a lot of time sitting at your desk, this is vital. Try to sit with both feet on the floor, with your legs uncrossed. Your shoulders should be relaxed, and if possible, try to keep your knees facing forward.

Stand tall: Thinking about improving your posture will naturally improve it over time. Concentrate on how you hold your shoulders and back, even when you’re doing something as simple as making a coffee.
Work your muscles: Did you know that one of the biggest causes of joint and muscle pain is a lack of movement? Get up, shake out your legs, or hit the gym – you’ll notice the benefits quickly.

4. Consider nail care

Low temperatures and harsh, dry air have been proven to cause skin irritation and even eczema flare-ups during winter. If your hair and skin are suffering, your nails will likely be too – since they’re made of keratin, the same key protein in hair.

Nailcare is not just for women. If you’ve got a partner at home, they’ll likely notice any time and effort you might put into cleaning and restoring your nails. Once you know that you’re not walking around with dirty nails anymore, there’s bound to be an inevitable confidence boost too.

A final note

You don’t need to change much to feel more energised through winter. By taking care of your skin, hair, and body, you’ll notice benefits that seep into your emotional well-being too.
