If you’re over a certain age and looking for a job, chances are your age could affect the outcome

This is despite the fact that discriminating against someone for their age is illegal. Here’s how to create the best CV and avoid being judged on your age when you’re over 50.

According to the Office for National Statistics, Britain’s unemployment rate climbed to 4.7 % in the three months to May 2025, leaving about 1.67 million people without work.

Over the same period, the number of job vacancies fell by 56,000 (a 5.8 % drop), reducing the total to around 718,000 open roles.

It’s tough out there.

Remove non-essential information

Under the Equality Act of 2010 it’s illegal to discriminate against someone based on age, so you don’t have to state your age if you don’t want to. Employers should choose the individual best suited to a role, so allow your skills, experience and passion to take centre stage instead.

Your specific address (general location is fine), personal circumstances and photos can also be removed. These don’t explain why someone should hire you. Instead, fill valuable space with detail that will show off your skills. Speaking of which…

Restrict CVs to two pages – absolute maximum

Job searching is extremely competitive. At best, recruiters spend around seven seconds to scan a CV; increasingly it’s more likely they’ll use AI to do it for them. So applicants need to stand out as quickly and clearly as possible. Highlighting your skills, experiences, and interests in a concise manner is more likely to maintain interest.

Buzzwords and templates

Don’t waffle, or fill your CV with buzzwords and nonsense. Even if you work in marketing. Also, CVs should be tailored to each job, using only the relevant skills for the application. Research each vacancy beforehand to handpick the best skills to target and jumpstart you higher up in the list.

Emphasise experience over age

Experience is often preferred to education. Showing you have years of developed skills is better than a list of qualifications or degree in something less relevant. Strike a positive tone and list key abilities before academic qualifications on your resume for the recruiter to see this first.

Include a professional summary

An even better way to grab attention from the get-go is to start with a professional summary: a concise (no waffle!) overview of you and your talents. The benefit of this is the hirer has everything they need in a tightly worded package. They can explore further once you’ve grabbed their attention.

Enjoying this article? More of an entrepreneur? Maybe you’d like this piece about raising investment for your own business

Sell your technical skills

Employers need to know that you’re as technically proficient as someone 20 years younger. Prove that you’re up to date with the latest tools and platforms by including them in your CV. This includes skills you’ve learned in lockdown – research shows it can take as little as 10 days to learn a new technical skill. Both Google and LinkedIn offer free courses, but a search on the web will turn up plenty of learning opportunity.

Just remember to avoid unnecessary jargon or ‘inside lingo’ that some hirers may not understand, and break up technical content with softer skills to add a human feel.

Network, network, network!

Most job applications are now online which, depending on your expertise, may not be ideal. But that doesn’t mean it’s what you must rely on. Also referred to as the Hidden Job Market, some research suggests as many as 70 per cent of jobs aren’t even posted online or shared publicly. If you’re used to the word-of-mouth approach to secure a job then keep practicing this alongside online applications.

If content is King, then design is its Queen

How a CV appears is just as important as the information it provides, so a good visual balance will mean the reader focuses on what matters the most: your qualifications. Keep your CV polished by incorporating bullet points, short summaries, and a mix of formats for clarity. Make it visually pleasing but avoid overly elaborate designs.

And finally, should you use AI to write your CV?

There’s no reason why you can’t get Chat etc to help you get started, or make drafts or suggestions. But don’t just hand the whole job over. Edit your CV, make sure it has your tone of voice. Employers can spot AI, and many might not be keen if they think you can’t be bothered to even write your own resume. But yes, AI is a great tool in your CV building arsenal, used well.

Specialist makeup artist Joyce Connor reveals how skin types mature differently, and shares her expert guidance when it comes to choosing the right products.

For this three-part feature, Joyce will be looking at three different skin types. In this first part we explore makeup and skin care for African-Caribbean skin. Parts II and III explore white and Asian skin respectively.

Everyone’s skin is different

Years ago, most makeup found on beauty counters was aimed at people with white skin. Now we’re finally starting to see decent makeup ranges for all skin tones, it’s time to look at maturing skin with a more specialist approach.

…it’s time to look at maturing skin with a more specialist approach.

When it comes to both makeup and skincare, what worked for you at 25 doesn’t always work so well at 55. And Caucasian skin at 55 is very different from African-Caribbean or Asian.

In this first part of three on how to choose makeup not only for your skin colour, but also as you age, Joyce Connor takes us through what makes African-Caribbean skin unique. She also gives her recommendations on a skincare routine, and the best products for maturing African-Caribbean skin.

Check out Silver’s very own Pro-Ageing Stem Cell Regenerator Serum

Firstly, at what age does African-Caribbean skin start to change and show signs of age?

All skins are different. African and Caribbean skin will start showing signs of age at around 55 years of age. Obviously this is a generalisation, but it’s a reasonable rule of thumb.

Heading into our fifties and beyond, what is the best skin care routine?

As our skin ages we need to use different skincare routines to those we had when we were younger.

African-Caribbean skins tend to be oiler because of the higher melanin levels, but this reduces with age. Using a nightly facial oil containing vitamin C will brighten skin in winter.

A weekly refining mask for those with slightly oiler skins is advised. Exfoliation is important for all skin types to increase the penetration of oils and serums.

What type of makeup should those with African-Caribbean skin avoid?

As our skin ages we need to be aware of the makeup choices. African-Caribbean skins need to step back from caked-on foundation, and a wash of base colour looks more natural.

Avoid using black pencils on eyebrows and opt for a dark brown powder instead.

With all skin tones, the clue is in softening the approach. Steer away from black, and avoid heavy foundations etc. Let the more natural, beautiful you shine through!

Joyce’s recommendations for African-Caribbean skin

Skincare and beauty routine

Nightly facial oil

A weekly refining mask

Exfoliation for greater skin penetration

A wash of base colour rather than heavy foundation

Brown for eyebrows

There’s plenty of competition for all good positions. So it’s worth also thinking about how you’re going to set yourself apart from the crowd, and make yourself more attractive to would-be recruiters. How can you improve your chances of landing a great job?

How to improve your chances

There’s no single magic bullet change that will turn around your fortunes in the job market. However, there are plenty of small changes that might make a substantial difference. They’ll add up if you take enough of them seriously.

Getting an interview is more than half the battle, and having a decent CV will help you here. If you think that your age will go against you getting in front of the interviewers, remember you don’t have to include your age on your CV.

Get more training

Employers are looking for people with particular skills. By picking those skills up, you’ll be better suited to the job you’re looking for. This applies even if you’re well into your career, especially in evolving industries where new skills are always valuable.

There are a lot of free training options online these days. Google and LinkedIn, for example, offer a lot of digital marketing modules that are free to complete. Investigate further.

Don’t be afraid to ask

The skill they call ‘networking’ is, more often than not, the simple practice of asking people if they know of any opportunities that you might seek to get into. By keeping your ears open, you’ll be better able to take advantage than if you’d simply waited for a public notice of an opening.

It can feel awkward asking, but you know the old adage. If you don’t ask, you won’t get.

Grow your network in your industry

Of course, another vital component of networking is to have people there to talk to in the first place. Don’t rely on social media, here – just because you’ve connected with someone on LinkedIn doesn’t mean that your work is done. Traditional messaging strategies like business cards are still effective, so employ them ruthlessly!

Tailor your CV to each opportunity

If you’re sending off lots of applications every day, then taking the time to tailor each of them to a given opportunity might seem excessively laborious. This is where AI assistance might be handy. Try asking ChatGPT, for example, to help focus on specific angles for each job.

Don’t get a chatbot to completely write the CV for you (you’ll get found out eventually) – but do get it to point out the tweaks you might make. There are plenty of tricks you can employ to improve your CV.

Dress appropriately for interviews

The chances are good that your prospective new workplace has a dress code. Find out what it is before you turn up for the interview. And we’re not assuming that means dressing up. Some places these days are much more relaxed; it’s about fitting in.

If necessary, email or call them and ask about the office dress code. If you really are stuck, then there are a few general rules of thumb you might follow.

Don’t be scared to ask for what you want

If you’re not up front about your wage requests, then you’ll ultimately end up disappointed – since it’s difficult to ask for a raise for at least a year after you take up a position. This is why you should be clear on your salary expectations from the beginning. You won’t get something you don’t ask for!

Landing the job of your dreams is not an easy task, but you can always follow these tips to improve your chances.

Angelique Miles, 53, @angeliquemiles

This is a sentiment echoed by Evans’ peers. ‘I feel like it’s because I’m over 50 that I get the traction I do, and not in spite of it,’ states 53-year-old New Yorker Angelique Miles (@angeliquemiles), who has accrued almost 50,000 followers since 2014. With a predominant focus on fitness, there’s no denying Miles has an enviable figure – for any age – and says her profile draws in younger people, ‘who tell me, “If I can look like this at 53, then I’m going to follow you!”’

Aged 58, he boasts 349,000 followers. ‘Millennials and Generation Z don’t know too much of the process of ageing, how to age gracefully. I’m showing that, at this age, I can wear anything I want by keeping it grown and sexy [with] different elements of style.’

Mature influencers generate a greater sense of trust

Another aspect that’s undoubtedly drawing followers to older influencers is a sense of genuineness. Whereas many in their teens, 20s, and even 30s happily spend hours changing outfits to pose for different photos in various locations, this prospect holds notably less appeal for their more mature cohorts. They tend to post on a more spontaneous basis. As such, authenticity shines through – an aspect 86% of Instagram users attach the most importance to when scrolling through images.

‘I try to be as authentic as possible. If I don’t have something to say, I don’t post,’ states Miles. ‘The brands I usually work with are skincare and beauty, so I do curate content for that. But for general content, I don’t really curate anything. It’s not a case of, “Oh, that’s some good light, let me take a photo”.’

I try to be as authentic as possible. If I don’t have something to say, I don’t post

Evans concurs. ‘My posts are a bit rough at the edges, as I do not have a professional photographer or the highest video and image editing skills,’ he says, while Garnett shares that her followers resonate with the fact her images are ‘real’.

‘I don’t have a planned schedule, I simply post when I feel I have something interesting to say, an outfit I particularly love, or if something exciting is happening in my life,’ she agrees. ‘I think people follow me because I’m living quite an ordinary life that they can relate to. Whenever somebody who follows me meets me in real life, they always say that I’m exactly the person they thought I was.’

However, as Randle notes, it’s important to appreciate the fine line between curation and making an effort – especially once you become recognisable. ‘I do not feel pressure… to maintain a certain image or lifestyle. [But] I used to run to the corner store looking any kind of way. I learned from that! Someone took a pic of me and posted, “We caught Grandad out and about.” When I saw that, I looked a mess. [Now] when I go into the public as a public figure, I make sure everything is in place.’

Meet the men over 50 proving age is just a number

Breaking down ageist barriers

While consumers are welcoming older influencers with open arms, it’s been a much slower story with respect to brands. Attitudes are shifting, but at a more gradual rate.

‘In 2014, I was asked by a brand not to use any pro-ageing hashtags or publicise the fact I was over 40,’ Garnett reveals. ‘That wouldn’t happen now, but lots of brands still shy away from using older women unless they’re including one to tick a box.’

In 2014, I was asked by a brand not to use any pro-ageing hashtags or publicise the fact I was over 40

Over in the US, Miles finds herself approached by a mix of brands. ‘Some approach me that are for the 50-plus market, but there are others where age is never even mentioned. Sometimes the brand will be a product for people my age – something anti-ageing, or anti-wrinkle. I like that, as it opens me up to more brand partnership opportunities.’

And even images posted by brands themselves can be quite ageist – purposefully or not. ‘I do see menswear companies on Instagram focus on a younger audience, rather than trying to attract an older (and arguably more affluent) demographic,’ remarks Evans.

Continuing the fight

It’s essential that mature influencers such as Miles, Evans, Randle and Garnett continue to bust stereotypes and highlight the positives that abound in the over-50 lifestyle; and, in turn, hopefully more will continue joining their ranks to up the ante.

‘I do my best to challenge all preconceptions of middle age,’ says Garnett. ‘Because those of us who are heading into it now are completely different to any generation that has gone before.’

As follower statistics and engagement figures reflect, when it comes to social media, age is ultimately nothing but another number. As Evans eloquently states: ‘Ageing is a continuum which we all follow, and there is nothing particularly different in human terms about someone who is 20 when compared with someone of 50. We all like similar things in life.’

So you want to be a mature influencer? How to get in on the ‘gram…

When posting on Instagram, authenticity is essential. But what else can you do to successfully venture into the world of influencing

Perseverance is key. ‘It doesn’t come overnight,’ says Miles. ‘It took years for me to get to this point. Keep plugging away.’

Use hashtags. Whatever you post an image of, add some hashtags in the caption – this allows users to find your pictures and engage. Look to other accounts for inspiration around what works for different topics.

The Instagram algorithm prioritises the feeds of those who like other people’s photos and respond to comments on their own. ‘I try to respond to every comment and DM [direct message], within reason,’ Miles reveals.

Make an effort – but not too much. ‘Make sure your images and videos are as good as you can but, perversely, don’t make them too professional, or it will look like a promotional account,’ shares Evans.

Don’t buy followers to boost your profile. ‘Brands in the past have been tempted by numbers, and not questioned why an account has grown magically only after a few hundred posts,’ Evans explains. However, ‘while they [were] slow on the uptake, most are now wise to that.’

Have a niche. ‘For maximum expansion, focus on one theme,’ Evans suggests. These types of feeds ‘attract followers as they have predictable content.’ Garnett adds that choosing a specific topic you have a passion for (such as travel, fashion or gardening) means posting ‘will never feel like a drag.’

Take the lead from your followers. ‘Posting pics and seeing the reaction of my fans…gives me that extra push of what they want to see,’ Randle reveals.

Just go for it. ‘You might miss out and never have that chance again,’ explains Randle. ‘I almost did – [but] now look at the outcome. Taking that first step is hard, but do it!’

For many people, the autumn years can be a time when you notice that you’re not as active or energetic, or as sharp as you used to be.

You may start to think that getting older means giving up on the things you used to enjoy. This can affect not only your mood, but also how you interact with others, including your friends and family. Some begin to isolate themselves, while others seemingly go through their day-to-day lives without a sense of purpose.

But this doesn’t have to be the case, not at all, especially if you have music in your life. And there is increasing evidence to show that music can help improve your life as you age. Not just to offer a richer quality of life with the joy of music. But studies show that music can work magic on your brain and mood.

Music is always there to cheer us up

Why music?

Well, there is no age limit when it comes to enjoying music, whether as a listener or one who makes music. Music is always there to cheer us up, to put a little spring in our step, to give us moments of joy – and, as numerous research studies have indicated, to make our lives better as we age.

It’s true – music-rich activities offer a lot of benefits for older adults, especially those who suddenly find themselves with a lot of time in their hands. When you learn to play a musical instrument, watch a musical performance, or even form a band and write your own songs, you’re undertaking an activity that can benefit you physically, cognitively and mentally.

Here’s a look at how music can improve your life as you get older

Physical health benefits

Participating in musical activities like music lessons, dance classes, and music therapy classes can improve your physical health because it gets you moving. In these activities, you practice movement, hand-eye coordination, and because they’re fun, you’re also bound to develop a sense of good health and well-being.

We’ve already featured how dance has been used to improve mobility after a stroke. Dance music not only distracts the mind but also inspires people to keep going no matter how difficult their circumstances, so you get the idea.

And when you move with the music, you use not only your body, but your brain too.

Benefits to cognitive functioning

So how do music-based activities improve brain functions? Studies show that music has the capacity to enhance cognitive functions. Music activates and stimulates the brain extensively, engaging multiple regions including the temporal, parietal, cerebellar and limbic regions.

Music has the capacity to enhance cognitive functions

Learning to play the piano in old age, for example, has been found to improve performance on attention and executive tasks, and even enhance the mood and quality of life. Moreover, it helps keep the memory sharp.

In a nutshell, music keeps the brain active and functioning well, which helps in combating age-related cognitive decline. Music has also been described as a promising tool in the rehabilitation of neurological illnesses related with aging, such as stroke, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Musical leisure activities, such as singing, playing and instrument, and even just listening to music supports neurological rehabilitation as well.

Mental health benefits

When we talk about mental health, we’re also talking about one’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Music has the power to uplift our mood and reduce stress, anxiety and agitation. This may lead to positive social behaviours and interaction.

Singing in a choir, playing in a band, or joining a group music class builds and strengthens social relationships and gives one a sense of belonging, which can uplift your sense of well-being. And when you play a musical instrument, you are able to express your emotions in a healthy and enjoyable manner.

Have some fun!

As you can see, music can bring back and even boost your vitality and improve your quality of life as you advance in years. By participating in music-rich activities, not only will you invite the zest back in your life, you’ll also be physically, cognitively and mentally healthier. You’ll find more reasons to move about, be creative, and interact with others.

So whenever you have the chance to engage in an activity that involves music, do so. Watch a musical, an orchestral concert or a live performance by your favourite band. You can find plenty of these online so you won’t even have to leave the safety of your home. Or how about challenging yourself to learn an instrument and write your own song? You can also check out new music artists and of course, dance away like nobody’s watching. Have fun!

It’s hip to be grey

Caroline Gray

Where it was once associated with images of old crones and witches, it’s now become positively trendy to grow out the grey hair. And finally women are feeling like they can be silver tops, and wear it with pride.

Former model turned jewellery designer, Caroline Gray, 52, says, ‘’My hair really started to turn in my mid-40s. The first time the grey conversation happened with my now husband was when I was about 47, just before marrying. We were in the cinema when he said, ‘when are you going to start dyeing your hair?’

Pippa Best

“The look on his face was priceless when I said I wasn’t. Of course I care about my appearance, but I’m also a great believer in being true to yourself. And it’s your body, so your choice.’’

Script editor Pippa Best, 47, went grey at 35 after becoming a mum. She says whilst initially unsure, she now gets so many compliments on her long silver hair that she has grown to love it.

Inspiring others

Sarah Laker

For others, changing colour was not such a surprise. Sarah Laker, 50, who runs Marple Stationery in Stockport, says her grandma went white in her thirties and she followed the same path: “I started dyeing in my 20s, but then when I was 34 I was off work with vertigo. I couldn’t bear my hair being touched so I had it cut really short. Then when I was well and it was time to go back to work I actually liked the grey! So I was grey before it was a trendy thing to do.”

Friends have dubbed her their ‘ginspiration’ and many have also stopped colouring, but she hasn’t been without her critics. Sarah was annoyed to be told by a customer that she could look 10 years younger if she dyed her hair. She says: ’Why would I want to look 10 years younger? I’m completely happy with myself and my life; I have a lovely husband of nearly 28 years, two beautiful daughters, and my own business.’’

Why do people judge the grey?

…we have to fight the fear of ageing from a very early age. Ageism is an implicit bias

Behavioural psychologist Prof Carolyn Mair PhD, author of The Psychology of Fashion, says such comments happen because there is still a preoccupation with eternal youth.

‘’Women, and increasingly men, are socialised into believing that to be successful in any aspect of life, they have to be beautiful. And as being beautiful is equated with being young, we have to fight the fear of ageing from a very early age. Ageism is an implicit bias.

“Since Lady Gaga dyed her hair silver, it has been a trend for younger women too. But this is different to naturally greying hair, which is an explicit sign of ageing and which has been seen negatively.’’

Want to boost the feel-good endophins in your brain naturally?

Is it different for men?

Historically, men have never really had to deal with such judgement when they grow out the grey. Older men are often tagged as distinguished ‘silver foxes’. Think George Clooney, Jeff Goldblum, Pierce Brosnan and many more.

Michael Facherty, 69, says he was ‘salt and pepper’ in his 40s, and grey by his 50s, but welcomed the change. “I used to be ginger, and I bless the day that my hair and beard turned white. There is a lot of demand for a Father Christmas/ Santa with a real white beard! Also, not being called Ginge is good too.’’

Former BBC Midlands Today newsreader Richard Uridge, 59, says going grey was never issue for him. “I honestly can’t remember, it was so long ago. I probably started going grey 20 years ago but it was so incremental I barely noticed it happening. And even now I only realise I’m fully silver (well, let’s be honest, white) when I look back at pictures of the young raven-haired me.”

Richard Uridge before and after

He acknowledges women have a harder time than men in the ageing process adding ‘’I think men are partly (possibly largely) to blame for that inequality. Personally I have no problem with grey-haired women. My mum went grey prematurely – as they used to say – so I had a positive role model for the natural look.’’

Time for rebrand?!

Award-winning celebrity hairdresser, Phil Smith, believes whilst things are changing, ageing is still an issue. He says, “After 30 years of being a hairstylist, going grey is definitely a recurring concern for clients. It seems to me the fear isn’t about going grey or having grey hair, but the idea that it is associated with getting older and the fear of ageing.

“Despite grey hair being sported by influential celebs and the fashion industry’s finest – take Sarah Harris, Stacey London, and Tennille Murphy as examples – the fear of going grey is deep rooted. I try to encourage my clients to see the beauty in their greys, showing and explaining options on how it could enhance their look. But ultimately the decision is theirs.’’

A trip to the hairdressers can help ease the transition, and he recommends highlights or lowlights as blending through the roots and coloured ends will allow the grey not to be so obvious.

Growing out the shades of grey

Author Annemarie Flanagan

Grey is not a favourable word and is often still used in a negative sense; ‘what a grey day’, ‘you’re looking a bit grey – are you ill?’, so I prefer to say my hair is turning ‘silver’ and rather than feel defeated I’m welcoming this new stage.

As Prof Mair says, “Many women have decided to embrace the natural signs of ageing and not dye their hair. This can be empowering as it enables them to be authentic and not simply conform to societal norms and ageist prejudices.

“We all age, and as we do, we are likely to become more confident, more tolerant and more certain about what matters.’’

Lockdown has brought many positive developments; cleaner air, less traffic, shopping locally, getting to know your neighbours and letting nature take its course. Finally ditching the dye is one such silver lining.

THINKING OF GROWING OUT THE GREY?

For a slow transition talk to your hairdresser consider highlights/lowlights

Alternatively, go bold and get a shorter cut, start afresh! Grow out the grey hair without having to colour it

The texture of grey hair is different as it loses colour and melanin. Swap out your usual shampoo and conditioner for silver-specific products

Hair will also feel more wiry, so invest in some good hair masks and treat yourself

Grey hair can yellow, so try a purple shampoo once a week this is aimed at enhancing the silver tones in your new natural colour

Consider your natural colours and clothing too. Having different hair will affect how your clothes look on you

Also revisit your makeup – it might be that you need a more dramatic look, or to tone down a bit

Francisco Cipriano models literally all over the world and loves what he does, but is now also working on new projects close to his heart and his love of Portugal. “Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about reinventing yourself,” he says. And proves it, as guide and narrator for a documentary called Movement. The film aims to provide the viewer with an awe-inspiring insight into the lives of not so ordinary people, traveling around Portugal’s countryside and coast in a captivating way.
