Thinking ahead to the new year and getting fitter?

Finding the right personal trainer can be a game-changer for your fitness journey. Whether your goal is to build strength, lose weight, improve mobility, or just stay motivated, the right trainer can make all the difference. With so many options available, choosing someone who fits your needs, personality, and goals can feel overwhelming.

Here are 10 tips to help you find the personal trainer that’s perfect for you.

Tip 1) Identify your fitness goals

Knowing your fitness goals is the first step. Are you training for a specific sport, wanting to tone up, or focusing on general health? Clear goals help you find a trainer who specialises in your needs.

Being specific also makes it easier to measure progress. A trainer who understands your objectives can create a programme that keeps you motivated and on track to achieve real results.

Tip 2) Look for qualifications and certifications

A qualified personal trainer is essential for safe, effective workouts. Look for certifications from reputable organisations and recognised training bodies. Proper qualifications show they understand anatomy, exercise programming, and injury prevention.

Working with a certified trainer reduces risk and ensures exercises are performed correctly. Asking about certifications and experience can help you find someone you trust to guide your fitness journey with confidence.

Tip 3) Consider experience

Experience matters when selecting a personal trainer. Trainers with years of practice have worked with different body types, fitness levels, and goals. They can adapt exercises to your needs and offer guidance during challenges.

Ask about their background, previous clients, and success stories. A trainer with relevant experience can make a noticeable difference in your progress and motivation, providing the right guidance while keeping workouts engaging.

Tip 4) Evaluate their communication style

Good communication is key to an effective training relationship. Your trainer should listen to your goals, explain exercises clearly, and answer questions patiently. Motivation is also important; a trainer who encourages you and provides feedback helps you stay focused.

A strong communicator ensures that workouts are safe and enjoyable, and you feel confident performing exercises correctly, even outside sessions, which improves long-term results.

Tip 5) Look for a trainer who matches your personality

Comfort and compatibility matter. You’ll spend significant time with your trainer, so their style should suit you. Some people thrive under a motivational, challenging approach, while others prefer encouragement and support.

Feeling at ease improves consistency and engagement. Discuss expectations during a trial session to see how your personalities align. A trainer who matches your style can make workouts fun and help you stick to your fitness plan.

Tip 6) Consider availability and location

Practicality is important. Ensure the trainer’s schedule fits yours, and the location is convenient. Consistency is key for results, so a trainer who is flexible and accessible will help you maintain regular sessions.

Whether it’s at a gym, studio, or online, the right setup ensures you don’t miss workouts. Choosing a trainer with suitable availability helps you commit long-term and keeps your fitness journey on track.

Tip 7) Ask About programmes and training methods

Different trainers use different methods, from strength training to functional fitness or high-intensity interval sessions. Ask about their approach and see if it aligns with your goals.

A good trainer can adapt programmes as you progress, keeping them challenging but achievable. Understanding their methods ensures that the workouts match your preferences, making it easier to stay motivated and see measurable results over time.

Tip 8) Review testimonials and references

Checking a trainer’s testimonials or references gives insight into their skills and professionalism. Hearing about past clients’ experiences can show their ability to motivate, teach, and produce results.

Positive feedback highlights reliability and effectiveness, while any negative patterns may be a red flag. Gathering this information allows you to make an informed choice and feel confident that the trainer can support your individual fitness goals.

Tip 9) Consider costs and packages

Personal training is an investment, so consider costs carefully. Some trainers offer packages or discounts for multiple sessions. Compare prices, but don’t choose solely based on cost. Experience, qualifications, and compatibility with your personality are more important than the cheapest option.

Finding a balance between quality and affordability ensures you get the support you need without overspending. A fair package makes a long-term commitment easier.

Tip 10) Trust your instincts

Finally, trust your instincts when choosing a trainer. If something feels off, keep looking. The right trainer should make you feel confident, motivated, and supported.

Feeling comfortable with your trainer helps you stay consistent and committed. Your gut can guide you in deciding if a trainer is the right fit for your personality, goals, and lifestyle. A strong connection often leads to the best results.

Finding the right personal trainer for you

Choosing the right personal trainer can transform your fitness journey from a struggle to an enjoyable experience. Take time to research, meet potential trainers, and ask questions. Consider your goals, personality, and logistics before committing.

As we age, our body hair changes. Hair grows where it didn’t use to and stops growing where you’d like it to grow. And our skin changes too.

Is it time to ditch the razors? If you’re battling to find a solution for hair removal that won’t cause any irritation to your sensitive or mature skin, there are a few options available to you that might work.

What exactly do we mean by sensitive?

Sensitive skin is about more than just redness or skin conditions like rosacea or eczema; in fact, skin sensitivity comes in many different forms. It might be that you suffer from dehydrated skin, dry skin patches, or reactions to treatments or products.

And as we age, we can often find skin sensitivity flares up again. Below are some common identifying signs you can use to determine the skin type you’re dealing with:

Sensitive and oily skin

Greasy

Enlarged or clogged pores

Rough texture

Acne or pimples

Sensitive and dry skin

Redness

Rashes

Inflammation

Flaking

If you’re finding that your skin has changed, and shaving is giving you more trouble than it’s worth, it might be time to start thinking of new ways to go smooth.

Read more: Makeup masterclass for mature skin from Naomi Campbell

Three hair removal solutions for sensitive skin

If you’ve noticed your skin presents some of the above signs, it’s important to take precautions when deciding which hair removal solution to use. The following hair removal solutions are generally considered safe for sensitive or mature skin. Albeit with the correct application methods, and before- and after-care.

Waxing

Since waxing sensitive skin can result in redness and even skin lifting, it’s important to first prepare your skin before getting your wax strips and spatulas out. Even if you’re getting waxed by a professional, it’s essential to do some preparation before your appointment like gently exfoliating the area once a week, avoiding excessive sun exposure, and taking an anti-inflammatory an hour before your service.

Sugaring

Compared to waxing, sugaring is largely considered a much gentler experience – great if you have particularly sensitive skin. This is because the paste used in sugaring doesn’t stick to your skin and instead attaches to the hair. As a result, the amount of irritation in the area is significantly reduced.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal has also been designed with sensitive skin in mind. While it takes between two to three weeks for the hair to grow back after waxing – and just one or two days after shaving! – laser hair removal is a much more permanent solution; the lessened frequency of this hair removal means a decreased risk of redness or scabbing. However, due to its permanency, it’s best to do some research before you go through with any treatment.

It can be difficult finding a hair removal solution that doesn’t irritate sensitive skin. However, waxing, sugaring and laser hair removal are largely considered the safest options if you do suffer from increased skin sensitivity. Just remember to take extra precautions and immediately stop treatment if you notice any bad side effects.

Naomi Campbell always dazzles. Find out how to get the look in this subtle masterclass in how to soften your makeup as you mature.

She’s famously sober these days, so her skin will benefit from increased hydration, and there’s no doubt she can afford great skin care. But if you’ve been using the same makeup forever, it’s time for a change. Makeup for mature skin requires a different routine and products. Our skin is simply different, and it’s important to recognise this before we attempt to replicate a makeup look we’ve seen on YouTube.

Aim for dewy and fresh, not cake and bake

Using the right primers, foundations, and concealers can make a world of difference. Less is more. Heavy makeup accentuates pores and creases; and too much powder dries out skin and makes it look flaky. Aim for dewy and fresh, not cake and bake.

Preparing the skin

Prepare your skin with a light and lovely primer, and it’ll help soften open pores, fine lines etc. We love the Pro-Collagen Insta-Smooth primer from Elemis, £58.

Once your skin is prepped, aim for a light concealer. The Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Concealer, £25, is a really flexible option. It can act as a primer too, meaning one less layer, and less chance of caking and creasing.

Foundation: pick something light with a dewy sheen, rather than a heavy matte finish. We love the Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation, £33.

For blush, go for a light liquid, like the Armani Neo Nude, £32, and just pat a small amount on the apple of your cheek. A light dusting of very fine powder will do to finish.

Making your eyes pop

Naomi’s colouring and brown eyes make it possible for her to go for black eyeliner, but those with fairer skin should swap for browns. Stick to ONLY the top lid, with just a sweep of eyeshadow colour along the lower line. Mascara; again, brown is less harsh for more mature fair skin, but for some real pizzazz or a night out, don’t shy away from some false eyelashes to make your eyes pop!

For eyeshadow, Naomi has some lovely warm russets fading to palest lilac on her lids here. Accentuate the outside of the top lid with the darker colours, and bring lighter colour closer to the nose. We found this gorgeous little Chanel palette, Les 4 Ombres – 378 Douceur et Sérénité, £47, had a really simple range of colours to create a similar look. Beware of too much sparkle though – it can travel around your face and settle into creases.

Accentuating your lips

Finally lips. Warmer nudes will work better than garish brights for this look. Use a slightly darker lip pencil around the outside edges, and blot to help avoid bleeding. A softer glossy type lipstick always brings the glamour.
In some quarters it is believed that when a person passes the half century, all attempts to be stylish should be abandoned in favour of comfortable, practical, and often beige clothing. This is of course a complete travesty, as proved by these fellows sporting their looks on Instagram.

Show your true colours; purchase that racy pocket square you always fancied but never dared to wear when 25. Wear a selection of hats that replace a bald pate or greying locks with aplomb. Also perfect for you to doff elegantly when the mood takes you.

Get ready for the cooler months

As the seasons pass (and Christmas looms, egad), one must up one’s game in the face of the sartorial peccadilloes about to be unleashed. Yes, I’m talking about those dreary outdoor togs, ‘ironically’ worn snowflake jumpers, and woolly hats with antlers.

A chap approaches all events and occasions spreading awe via a sensational wardrobe. It’s the perfect opportunity to raise your sartorial game a notch or two. Those cherry-red trousers you never find the nerve to wear. That midnight blue dinner jacket with shawl lapels can be livened up with a colourful pocket square instead of the standard white. Yes chaps, unleash the inner dandy, and step forth.

More from Gustav – still looking for new summer togs or going on holiday?

CHAP PICKS

1. A bow tie from La Bowtique
These are hand-made adornments with a touch of flamboyance. Even their standard black tie is slightly larger than average.
From £150 Instagram: @labowtique

2. A Chap silk pocket square
A must-have to finish any chap’s outfit. This Absinthe-green pure silk pocket square is versatile and can be worn in a number of ways, producing entirely different variations to suit one’s mood.
