Wednesday Season 2 sees a swell of British TV royalty

The first part of Wednesday Season 2 is set to be released this week, and there are a few surprise faces

Since its creation in 1964 the Addams Family has lured in audiences with its Halloween-chic sparkle and lovable cast of glamorous misfits. The 2022 interpretation, Wednesday, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and directed by Tim Burton, saw Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) in the titular role. And suddenly we were in the gothic glamour of Nevermore Academy.

A procession of British actors

Discussions around unexpected casting for Wednesday Season 2 are buzzing, but let’s take a look at the casting history for this high profile series. Because, frankly, it’s never been driven by pop-culture frenzy.

The cast of the first seasons of Wednesday was full to the brim with British actors. Welsh star Catherine Zeta Jones, 55, took on the role of Morticia. We all remember her from her earlier career, including starring in the likes of Zorro and Titanic. Having taken multiple sabbaticals from acting in the last two decades, we wouldn’t necessarily have pegged her as a lead role in Netflix’s ‘next big thing’. But wow, is she perfect for the scary yet seductive role.

Season one of Wednesday also saw Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, 46. Unlike Zeta Jones, Christie has typically played characters who are, shall we say… not so glamorous. From warrior Brienne of Tarth in GOT to fully armoured fighter, Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Wednesday saw Christie fully embrace her feminine side as principal Larissa Weems – she puts a refreshing feminine twist on the stern character. What could have easily become a bit ‘Miss Trunchball’ is instead layered and mysterious.

Season one also saw some lesser-known Brits such as Georgie Farmer playing Ajax Petropolus, and Iman Marson as Lucas Walker.

Who’s joining for Season 2?

Now, with the second season launching, the series is doubling down on its British DNA – and the casting news has the potential to be pure gold.

Okay, so this is exciting. Remember the character Grandmama Hester Frump? Portrayed in previous incarnations by Blossom Rock (1964-66), Carol Cane (1993) and Jackie Hoffman (2010). This is a character who is the embodiment of gothic glamour. This lover of death is being undertaken by the one and only Joanna Lumley, 79. British acting royalty. Famous of course for Absolutely Fabulous amongst a myriad of other successes including Sapphire and Steel, The New Avengers, and loads more.

Having previously worked with Tim Burton on the 2005 animated film, The Corpse Bride, Lumley was thrilled to get the chance to work with him again. In an interview with Dermot O’Leary and Rochelle Hummes on This Morning, she recounted the phone call with Burton as he offered her the role, saying, “…before he’d even finished the sentence, I said, ‘how much do I need to pay you to do this?’ It’s just divine.”

Lumley gushed over his attention to detail describing how absolutely everything is done with absolute precision. The tiniest props, like distant croquet wickets, made to look like bones. Everything is considered.

Lumley isn’t the only new Brit joining the Wednesday cast for Season 2. Doctor Who icon Billie Piper, who has had a varied career – from appearances on cult music show Top of the Pops to the risqué drama Secret Diary of a Call Girl. She recently shocked the nation by appearing in the plot twist ending of Doctor Who… as the Doctor, if that’s to be believed!? Despite this, Piper is another actress who one wouldn’t necessarily have anticipated seeing in a wacky cultural phenomenon such as Wednesday. Then again, considering Doctor Who’s knack for the weird and wonderful, she might just be a perfect fit.

What’s striking is how Wednesday sidesteps the usual trend-chasing in casting. These choices feel intentional, curated. Like someone raided the vaults of British screen history and invited only the most intriguing players to join the gothic party.

The purple carpet premier

This week saw the Wednesday Season 2 premiere take place in London. It was very Wednesday, from The Hand on the DJ booth, and a purple carpet so rich it felt conjured by Morticia herself. The addictive gothic glamour vibes and attention to detail were evident throughout the event.

The cast were additionally in keeping. Jenna Ortega wore her Wednesday style makeup. Now that’s a lot of eyeliner. Billie Piper went full goth in the dramatic black dress and Joy Sunday arrived dressed head to toe in a blood red dress with matching tights, shoes and hat.

That’s not all the news. Just this week Netflix confirmed that Wednesday will be returning for a third season. In fact, it’s already in the works. Question is, who will crawl out of the crypt and into the cast?

So when and where can you watch it?

Wednesday Season 2 will be released in two parts, both on Netflix. Part one will come out on 6 August 2025, with the second part releasing on 3 September – both on Wednesdays of course… very clever Netflix.

Just like the first season, there will be a total of eight episodes in the season, each promising an abundance of deadpan humour and gothic glamour.

If you’re a big fan of sleeper trains, or want to work on your carbon footprint and notch up fewer air miles, look sharp. A new sleeper train service network is launching across Europe from 2027, stretching from Stockholm to Rome, Barcelona to Budapest.

The new Nox sleeper trains are designed to be a serious alternative to flying. Priced competitively compared to short-haul flights, they’re on a mission to provide a comfortable and streamlined service without the cramped seats and extortionate airport wait times.

Plus of course there’s all the fun of travelling by sleeper train! It might not be as luxurious as the Orient Express but there is always something a bit glam about a sleeper.

So what about the trains themselves?

Every Nox cabin has a two-metre length bed. So tall folks, no more extra leg room charges. Seating space, luggage storage and a little extra room to stand up. Additionally, some cabins come with double beds and panoramic windows, perfect for watching the Alps roll by while you sip something cold and smugly ignore the chaos at whatever airport you just skipped. Just take a look at these examples… a far cry from an economy seat on an EasyJet excursion.

And potentially good news for pet lovers. We asked them about the possibility of travelling with our furry friends. “As for dogs and pets, we’re working on a strategy so please stay tuned for more,” they told us. So fingers crossed that Fido or Mittens could possibly make that journey with you too. Generally, four-legged friends aren’t welcome in sleepers so this could be huge.

Where’s Nox going?

Frankly, it’s a long list. Founder Janek Smalla has outlined 35 European routes where you’ll be able to experience this new version of rail travel. With routes sprawling across more than 100 European cities. Whether you’re planning a wine-fuelled weekend in the South of France or a snowy escape to Stockholm, Nox could be your new favourite way to get around.

Horse riding – the perfect exercise for all ages

Are you looking for a new sport? Something varied, fun, a full-body workout?

Horse riding may be for you – and it doesn’t need to cost the earth. The truth is horse riding isn’t all racing around and jumping fences. The majority of horse riders, especially those who’ve ventured into the horsey world in later life, have a more laid-back approach, and it’s always a great form of exercise.

Let’s get physical

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘The horse does all the work’ but even ambling around the countryside on horseback requires work on your part, and you may not even realise you’re doing it. If you’re sitting on a horse whilst it’s moving, you’re actively working to balance yourself. It may not feel difficult, but holding yourself in the centre of the saddle, and keeping your arms and legs in the right place means you’re engaging multiple muscles, especially your core.

Not only that, the positioning of the ball of your foot in the stirrup acts in a similar way to DVT therapies – meaning you’re actively improving your blood-flow, without even trying.

If you do decide to take things further, venturing into the world of jumping or dressage is a great form of cardio… especially if you’re riding a horse that needs a bit more encouragement.

And age is no barrier to getting started. Gogglebox star Stephen Webb picked up the sport in his mid-forties, and he’s not the only one. Even at the top end of the sport, some of the best riders are hardly spring chickens; just look at John Whitaker (69), Mary Hanna (69) and Carl Hester (57).

The social side

Most riding schools offer group lessons. They’re normally cheaper than the private alternative, and see you paired with other riders at a similar level. It makes it easy to connect with others and form a community.

I’m still friends with people I met at 10 years old, thanks to horses. Seeing the same faces every morning, you’re bound to make connections. Some of my fondest memories are of hacks along the South Downs, riding to the ice-cream van at Ditchling Beacon and chatting away for hours.

You’ll also find that most horsey people are extremely passionate and will chat for hours about their beloved ponies. So, help and advice are easy to come by.

Where to get started

If you want to dip your toe into the equine world before diving in, a one-off lesson is a great way to start. Most riding centres will provide basic equipment and some even do discounted taster-sessions for new clients.

The British Horse Society website allows you to search for accredited riding facilities in your area, so you can be confident that you’re being taught by a qualified professional.

Not sure about being in the saddle, but like the sound of equine-exercise?

Horses aren’t machines, and there is a certain risk that comes with riding a horse. If you’d prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, there’re still ways you can get involved. Grooming, mucking out, carrying hay and buckets of water are great forms of exercise.

There are equine charities dotted all over the world, notable UK based ones are the BlueCross, RSPCA and World Horse Welfare – they’re often searching for volunteers. Just feeding and caring for horses in need will ensure that you’re out in the fresh air and getting your steps in – whilst helping a charity, good on you!

If you really want to get involved, a lot of charities have non-ridden companion horses in need of homes. Taking on a companion pony will provide you with routine and a loyal friend. As well as the community that comes with a public stables.

2025 sees 150 years of the Grand Hotel Eastbourne – and they want to hear from you

The Grand Hotel Eastbourne is 150 years old, a century and a half of gilded ceilings, whispered secrets, and champagne-soaked celebrations. Steeped in history, it’s seen two world wars and seven monarchs. Now it’s your chance to be part of it. If you’ve stayed there, visited there, or just been a passing admirer with a camera, they have their sights set on you!

The hotel is curating a huge exhibition, and part of that is going to be a living ‘guest book’. As The Grand Hotel prepares to unveil its anniversary exhibition, the hotel is inviting local residents and guests to share their treasured memories. Whether they honeymooned under its chandeliers or danced in its drawing rooms, their story belongs here.

Let’s go back in time

A bit of background first; 1875 saw the opening of Eastbourne’s very best hotel. The brainchild of William Earp, it was built to be the ultimate holiday destination for the upper classes. A century and a half later, its reputation as a high-end luxury establishment still stands.

But it’s not just a hotel. Far from it, during the second world war, its beachfront location made it the perfect military headquarters. The building played an integral strategic role, preventing opposing forces from holding ground in the vulnerable Southeast of England.

Since then, it’s reverted back to its original luxury hotel status. Proving to be the perfect stay for those seeking the hustle and bustle of Eastbourne’s town centre, or adventure in the picturesque South Downs – Seven Sisters anyone?

Not just a place to sleep

The hotel is a destination and experience in itself. The spacious venue hosts weddings and parties as well as having wonderful restaurants, bars, gorgeous pools, spa treatments, concerts and dining. It’s also famous for its elegant afternoon teas, often with a live pianist or string quartet. Check out their events calendar.

Often referred to as ‘The White Palace,’ the hotel has a long and distinguished musical heritage. From 1924 to 1939, its Great Hall was the live broadcast home of the BBC’s Grand Hotel orchestra series.

It was also here in 1905, during a multi-week stay in the suite now known as the Debussy Suite (formerly Room 200), that Claude Debussy finalized his orchestral masterwork La mer, inspired by the English Channel views.

Ready to grow? Build scaling into your business plan

Entrepreneurs need to think long-term if they want to succeed

Many a business plan lays out what happens up until the launch, or the first milestone. Then they start to fizzle out. Growth turns out to be a pleasant surprise, followed by a chaotic scramble for space, staff, and cash.

Build scaling into the plan from day one, and that scramble turns into steps you’ve already plotted out thoroughly beforehand. Here’s a framework to fold into your next update, no matter your size or sector.

Longer forecasting

Most projections stop at a “realistic” uptick – 10% here, maybe 15% there. Stretch further than your initial expectations. Make sure that you model at least two bigger scenarios:

Rapid-growth: cases where orders double after one large contract.

Ongoing momentum: a steady 25% bump every quarter for two years.

Run cash-flow, staffing, and inventory needs under a range of growth models. Seeing the numbers early forces you to identify funding gaps, training needs, and supplier limits before they blindside you.

Design scalable processes

If a task works only because one person remembers how to do it, you’re likely going to have a talent bottleneck. Map each core process – quotes, fulfilment, customer support – so a stranger could follow it with minimal hand-holding.

Then ask: what happens when volume triples? Can steps be automated? Where can approvals be pushed to team leads instead of directors? Small tweaks now save massive rewrites later.

Modular infrastructure

Whether you’re trying to protect cloud servers or take care of warehouse racking, plan in blocks that can bolt on quickly. In tech, that means choosing platforms that let you add users or compute power without fresh installs. In logistics, it’s shelving that can be reconfigured in a day, not a week.

This modular mindset extends to security and asset control. As you start expanding to new regions like Spain, a smart asset-tracking platform from somewhere like Traka España – digital key cabinets, RFID tags, real-time dashboards – keeps visibility intact without rewriting the rulebook each time a new location opens.

Create a talent pipeline

Scaling stalls when hiring starts to lag. Keep an evergreen ‘bench’ of potential hires: freelancers you trust, past interviewees who nearly made it, university contacts. Touch base twice a year so warm leads stay warm. Meanwhile, document onboarding, so new starters are productive inside a week, not a month.

Stress-test your pipeline

Suppliers will likely love working with your business, until your order size doubles overnight with little to no warning. Sit down now and ask what lead times look like at 2x, 3x, or even 5x your current volume. Lock in framework agreements or alternate sources where the answers sound shaky.

Scaling isn’t a lucky after-effect; it’s a specific approach to designing your business. Project bold scenarios, modularise processes and infrastructure, keep talent ready, give managers controlled autonomy, protect visibility with good asset tracking, and push suppliers to be honest about their own limits. Do that in the initial plan, and growth will feel less like a cliff-edge and more like the next step up a ladder you built in advance.

A (Brad) Pitt-stop

The A-list cast from F1: The Movie has certainly revved-up expectations. Star of Fight Club, Inglorious Bastards and Bullet Train, Brad Pitt is no stranger to an action film. Speaking about F1: The Movie, Pitt share his awe at driving real F1 cars.

“I still don’t know how we got away with it,” he said about how he, alongside producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski, made what Pitt called “the most visceral driving experience that’s ever been put on film.”

And what they got away with was putting Pitt and his fellow actor Damson Idris into professional race cars and filming them at top speeds. “The forces in these cars, the high-speed corners, the physics of it all want to rip your head from your shoulders,” says Pitt. “It’s shocking what these cars can do. And it’s a high unlike any high I’ve ever experienced before. We just couldn’t capture it any other way.”

It’s a film that will appeal to everyone, not just F1 fans…

Pitt says that the magic of the movie is the way it will appeal equally to longtime fans of the sport and to anyone who’s never even heard of Formula 1. “Threading that needle was the biggest challenge. But I think we’ve done that; made it enlightening enough and understandable for newcomers without dumbing it down for ultra fans. It’s funny, it’s aggressive, it’s driving, and it’s surprisingly heartwarming. I love all these characters. I think this film is so damn entertaining on so many levels.”

Joining Pitt is Damson Idris as his teammate-come-rival Joshua Pearce. Poised as one of Hollywood’s most dynamic rising stars, you may recognise him from his role as drug kingpin Franklin Saint in FX’s Snowfall. Or from his roles in Black Mirror and Swarm.

Pursuing something more adrenaline-driven, Idris has always hankered after a heart-stopping physical opportunity like this film. Speaking to GQ recently, Idris says, “I said I wanted to play an athlete and along came F1.” Later, discussing the film in an interview with the NME he adds, “It’s relatable for people who aren’t even F1 fans because it’s not only about being an underdog, but about being given a second chance. That’s something everyone deserves.”

Rounding out the star-studded crew (and offering the only strong female character in the whole show) is Kerry Condon, most recently from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. And Javier Barden, who played a key role in the viral and critically acclaimed series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Capping this all off is Game of Thrones star, Tobias Menzies.

The premiere – our take on the film

We asked Emily to attend this exclusive event for us because she’s an experienced F1 fan who’s worked in live events for years. She’s spent a lot of time at F1 tracks, and knows what’s she’s talking about. So, what did she think?

“From what I had heard and seen I had a feeling it would be very different to any sport-based film I’d seen before, as it had been filmed so closely alongside the actual sport,” she says. “I thought it would give a good insight behind the scenes of Formula One.

“I think the film felt amazingly immersive. Not just like being in an F1 car, but also the real-life races and racing environment. I loved that the film included real-time F1 drivers, team principals, broadcasters, and press.”

“I was also pleasantly surprised with the humour and comedy elements that were brought into it. You really felt as though you were almost watching a documentary or someone’s real life.”

The film seems very male-oriented. In fact, most of the characters throughout are male. Is it just a lot of dick-waving macho behaviour, or is there more to it?

“Kerry Condon, who played the first female engineer, really showed the strength that women in F1 actually have. It’s obviously a very male dominated sport, but her character really represented a strong and intelligent woman in a role that would have stereotypically been seen as a male role.

“I think Brad Pitt and Damson Idris were brilliant. Damson really stood out, and I think you could pick up the influence that Lewis Hamilton has had on the film. Maybe how he may have felt at the start of his own career as a young black, British F1 rookie.”

Let’s talk about the driving scenes…

“These were amazing and something I’ve never seen done so well in a movie before. Both drivers actually drove the cars in the film during live races. And you really felt as if you were in the car with them. Because the races were shot during real race weekends with the current drivers it felt very current, and very real!

“It’s also something that true-blue F1 fans will love. There are so many references to in-jokes within the sport circles. There’s a lot of the real team owners, principals and drivers in it too, so you get to see the sport from so many different angles.”

The storyline is perhaps inevitably secondary to the incredible tech and visual experience that the film offers. And to be fair, it’s not exactly a plot that will have anyone scratching their heads to understand. Without giving away too many spoilers:

“The storyline about the team being the underdog and the outcome of the races felt very predictable, until the final race comes around where it is touch and go, and you don’t know what might happen. I won’t say any more than that!

“With the romance plot (there is one!), again because this did feel completely predictable. But I think it worked well within the overall story line so that it wasn’t just about the racing.”

And so, any final words?

“You could definitely feel the influence of Lewis in this film heavily. From how the drivers would interact with each other, how strategy meetings are led, how everyone interacts in the team garage to everything that goes on back at the teams HQ it just felt very real.” 

“Everyone and anyone will enjoy this film. It’s not an intellectual challenge, but equally, you really don’t have to be an F1 fan to enjoy it.”

What do the critics say?

So far, F1: The Movie has received glowing reviews:

I learned how to stop my own migraines

Because doctors wouldn’t listen to me

At the age of five I had my first migraine, though I didn’t know it then. All I knew is that I’d had an orange flavour sweet. Within the hour I was vomiting, unable to see, with a numbness in my arms and legs, and a feeling as though I’d been punched in the head.

Of course, the initial thought was that I’d caught a horrible sickness bug. It came and went. Within 24 hours I could see again, another 24 and I felt normal.

These attacks continued to happen. Unpredictably and sporadically throughout my childhood and teen years, I’d have to stop what I was doing and dash to the nearest dark room, desperate to stop the car crash of symptoms. It rarely worked.

What’s the trigger?

As these migraines continued to spoil school days, trips and dinners, I began to form a link between certain foods:

Mint – both in savoury food and sweets
Orange flavouring
Tuna
Specific cheeses – including the one used in my school canteen

Not too bad right? Well, some people also experience migraines when they consume chocolate, wine, processed meats and coffee. It’s a minefield.

That’s not all

Food and drink aren’t the only triggers. By far the most disruptive trigger for me is the sun. Inescapable and, in Britain, completely unpredictable. Ever looked at a bright light, only to look away with spots on your eyes? They normally fade quickly, right? For some migraine sufferers that’s not the case. For me the sunspots grow, until I’m unable to see at all. This can happen in the space of a minute, until suddenly I’m feeling my way down the hall.

Much more than a headache

The reality for migraine sufferers is that they often need to spend their lives in a constant state of risk assessment. Solo travelling? What if you have an attack and need to navigate – you can’t see your phone screen. You’re in an unfamiliar place. You can’t drive because you can’t feel your arms and legs or see the road.

Dismissed at the GP

When the attacks ramped up in my twenties – sometimes multiple times a month – I finally went to my GP, desperate for answers. I’d quit a job over harsh office lighting. I wore sunglasses at night to avoid LED triggers. I was ready to investigate; blood tests, MRIs, allergy exams – anything to get answers.

I entered the practice, sat down, waited for the inevitable questions. My GP glanced at my notes and simply asked if I wanted a preventative medication you take every day, or a responsive medication for when you’re experiencing an attack?

When I explained that I was hoping for answers, an idea as to why by body was reacting like this. I was waved off.

This dismissal over health concerns is not unique to me. In a 2021 government survey it was found that, out of nearly 100,000 women, 84 per cent expressed that there have been times where they weren’t listened to by a healthcare professional.

The pill problem

Whilst medication can be helpful, the idea of taking a daily pill for the rest of my life was certainly not something I wanted to do. Opting for the responsive medication I took a peek at the side effects, and it was extensive. From fainting to seizures. You can’t take the pills if you’re on any other medication, or if you’ve got a history of strokes, heart issues, high blood pressure, liver issues, the list was endless. Yet, nobody was willing discuss these risks. They handed me the pills, and I was on my way.

The bigger picture

Women statistically are between 2-3 times more likely to suffer from migraines, than men. I can’t help feeling that this experience is an example of dismissal of women’s health issues. I was offered no consultation, no discussion of options, causation and the implications of taking medication.

Taking matters into my own hands

Frustrated, I dove into the research. Forums, medical journals, specialist blogs – you name it. Eventually, I found what doctors never told me:

I have hemiplegic migraines – a rare type affecting just 0.01% of people. They mimic strokes, cause vision loss, numbness, even temporary paralysis. They’re genetic, tied to mutations in specific genes like CACNA1A and ATP1A2. Oh, and they carry a higher risk of actual strokes.

Next steps

Understanding the disorder certainly elevated some of my stress surrounding it. Migraines, of all varieties, are rarely fatal. My research also revealed that sodium high foods, stress and dehydration can also exacerbate symptoms. So, concentrating on those elements can help to stop a migraine before it starts.

In the future, when I have any health concerns, I’m going to make sure to advocate for research and clarity. My GP knew that I was experiencing stroke-like symptoms and decided against investigation. If you’re experiencing debilitating issues, and feel it has a potential to be something more sinister, advocate for yourself. The issue of negligence towards women in medical settings is disgraceful. We need to be loud about it!

Charities like The Migraine Trust and The Brain Charity provide helpful information, both around the causes and variations of migraines. They also point migraine sufferers towards helpful resources for prevention and mitigation.

What you can do to prevent yourself having a migraine – today

Drink water: Adults should drink 1.2-1.6 litres of water a day. That’s equivalent to 6-8 glasses. Keep count to ensure you’re not dehydrated.
Practice mindfulness: It’s no secret that high stress levels can cause headaches and migraines. Try to do at least one activity a day to bring you a sense of calm. For example, yoga or a walk.
Keep quick fixes on hand – Whatever helps, keep it with you. Be that triptans, anti inflammatories or cold compresses. If you suffer an attack whilst out of the home this could be the difference between an inconvenience and disaster.
Identify triggers – It’s helpful to keep a food and activity diary when you suffer attacks. That way, you can better identify triggers to avoid in the future.
